Introducing FirstPlay

Hello PlayStation boys and girls,

My name’s Nathan Ditum, associate editor on FirstPlay, and I’m hugely excited to tell you that Episode 001 will finally launching this week, on Thursday 8th April.

If you’ve not heard the name before, FirstPlay is the new weekly interactive show from the team behind Official PlayStation magazine, which will be appearing on the Store every Thursday from now until our video-editing hands become gnarled claws that look not unlike a crow’s skeleton. Each episode costs 99p (or £8.99 for a 90-day subscription) and is packed full of HD reviews, previews, and screenshot galleries, with access to betas and downloadable goodies included as often as possible.

FirstPlay

Being the reigning office FIFA champ and definitely not a massive liar, I’m happy to say that Episode 001 features an in-depth preview of EA’s brilliant-looking 2010 FIFA World Cup, alongside HD reviews of God Of War III and Just Cause 2. We’ve also got our regular round-up of the coolest stuff happening on PSN, which will hopefully become a guide to a whole world of awesome content many of you might be unaware of. As an added treat we’ve also got a downloadable FirstPlay theme, and best of all, an exclusive piece of Just Cause 2 DLC.

FirstPlay FirstPlay

We’ll be back on the PS.Blog every week posting news about our latest episode and trying not to sound like we’re about to collapse from exhaustion. The team’s been working super hard to make FirstPlay as good as possible, and we can’t wait to hear what you lot make of it. Hope you enjoy.

See the Future of PS3. First.

I’m getting the subscription. Looking forward to the first episode :)

Is it all of europe or just UK first?

I’ve asked Nathan to pop by this morning to answer your questions, but just wanted to respond to this one in the meantime, as it’s popping up a lot.

For the launch, this is UK only, but we’re looking to roll this out to other territories in the future.

Hm when do we get it in rest of Europe?
Question: So the JC 2 DLC is only for UK or what??

:-(

xD at number 2 you fail! :P

Btw are the goodies available to subscribers only?

i’ll be subscribing anyways but would like to know

Mr. Ditum you shall have to play me on FIFA to prove how brilliant you are ;).

I’ll definitely be getting this as I love OPM and everyone on the team writes brilliantly.

6

Most likely only for UK even tho they forgot to mention that in the post. The price is only in pounds, that should give the hint.

I was in the beta, which was alright I might buy this for 90 days but I’m not sure yet.

is the jc2 dlc the same as the special ed dlc. a dynamic theme or avatars woulda bn gd for 1st dlc

so when do we get this in Denmark? same about video store, also comic store, its basically the only thing i really hate about SCEE,

please reply to this message or i will just take this as if you don’t care about anything but the bigger countries.

99P you have got to be joking:P

Scandinavia probably get this next year some time :-(
Typical Sony timeline…. Where’s our Video/Comic store come on…

Let me guess, only in the UK… Just like the beta! AARHG!!!

13

Why not just make this blog, a UK blog.

:(

14

Looking awesome guys :) Loved the Beta episode, can’t wait for the first full ep.

Lucy Porter adds a lot to it i have to say. Love the humour in it too

15

Microsoft does all of this for free on Xbox Live – will your content be significantly better to justify the cost?

16

No thanks, every gaming website offers this service (minus a couple of betas) for free. Plus I guess SCEE will classify demos as betas now to try and justify the price. It seems the real meaning of Beta-Testing is becoming lost.

17

@FishFingers
If you’ve ever bought OPM, you’d know it f***ing hilarious and very well-written… I’ve spent many’s a review laughing my face off at the quirkiness and homour (especially when it’s a review of a bad game)… 99p seems a decent price. Any chance of a release date for Ireland?

moriarty1975 07 April, 2010 @ 19:11
18

U.K only for now. Cant release it on the irish psn store because its too much hassle to translate it to……um…english?

if the downloadable goodies are as lame as the quore downloadable goodies i guess we’ll be getting screwed again

20

“and best of all, an exclusive piece of Just Cause 2 DLC.”

Why? What about the rest of us who would like to get the DLC and FirstPlay but cant? Why does SCEE always “forget” about the rest of Europe. Why not wait till everyone can get something and not just rush out things for one country? This is supposed to be the EU blog but instead we just see new services and announcments for the UK when the rest of us are left out in the cold……

And I really hope the JC 2 DLC is available to others outside the UK because I payed for that game and I want to enjoy it like everyone.

Handige_Harry 07 April, 2010 @ 19:19
21

ofcourse it will only be released in UK i mean Sony thinks that Europe is UK en the real europe is hidden for them

22

doesn’t look like it will be worth 99p, not much to it and could get it for free of youtube and gaming sites.

iL_DANiEurope 07 April, 2010 @ 19:32
23

there is gonna to be a 1sTime free sample?

Why can’t this be accessible to the whole Europe? Our country’s PSN store is in english only anyway so who gives? Comic reader, this, VidZone exclusive to UK… does anyone else feel ripped off?

25

So you want me to pay for something i get for free on the internet?

No thanks.

lonewolf1994 07 April, 2010 @ 19:51
26

em.. you do know that people can go watch previews and reviews for free on youtube right…?

Jesus Christ quit moaning. You don’t have to buy it if you’d rather watch someone else’s review on the internet. People like me who enjoy the humour in OPM are excited about this and will be buying it, it doesn’t affect you if you don’t want it so just leave it be.

28

Hi
Will this be a available for United Arab Emirates store

Now theres a surprise, I thought I was mistaken in not seeing Free donwladable ezine coming to the playstation Network. What tipped me off that it was pay / subscription based were the words “Future Publishing”. They were not doing it for free so hmmmm…. oh well I wont be getting it.

wardragon989 07 April, 2010 @ 20:08
30

Sweet, I might pick this up. Looking forward to good thing from this FirstPlay.

@ lonewolf1994, people can also read websites and blogs for free – but people still buy newspapers and magazines…

For one the quality (full screen on your HD TV) is likely to be miles better than that on YouTube, also the being a Future publishing production there is likely to be a fair chunk of exclusive first-look features, not to mention the odd freebie to download or competition to enter… The quality of the reviews/commentary is also likely to be of a high standard too.

People need to remember that this is a Future Publishing digital magazine and not something Sony are doing in-house…

You lost one subscriber…I would love to subscribe but I guess it is region coded. Thank god for Qore in the US store.

xKillerMonkeyx 07 April, 2010 @ 20:14
33

This is UK only for anyone who is asking. Might be roled out later throughout Europe, i cant wait tbh and wouldnt mind subscribing to it if there are some exclusives and other stuff included :-) Nice to see real reviews though :-)

why is scandinavia and most of europe always left behind.. its realy frustrating.. like the video store… will it ever come?

Pure_Mind_Games 07 April, 2010 @ 20:41
35

@35, you don’t want it

What, no “First Episode Free”?

36

Subscribing Tommorow, loved everything about the beta, so and up to date version will be awesome. Plus, i read in opm theres going to be free minis in some issues too!

almighty-slayer 07 April, 2010 @ 20:52
37

Why are people complaining that it isn’t free? You just think you are entitled to get everything for free or something?

will it work on an SD TV?

39

@39

Why would it not work?

Russia is forgotten too, I guess?
Well, Qore it is, then.

Oh well, maybe it’s about time (more like, overdue) for Sony to rename this thing!? This is NOT the PlayStation Europe blog, this is the UK blog… so sad, really!

The beta was ok. It just needed more content really. Might try it or get 1 or 2 when they have things i want on it;)

+ this is from the guys at UK PlayStation Mag.

What’s the point of this, really? We all know the news/videos will be out on the web within seconds. Seems pointless really.

44

@44

People will spend money on anything

TheHappyTurtle 07 April, 2010 @ 22:01
45

This is useless, I can get all that information for free, and after watching the beta, better quality elsewhere….

Oh yeah and bring back linux you evil evil corporation.

EHRGEIZ-XIII 07 April, 2010 @ 22:03
46

yeah …. nice, uk only…

@46

bet you dont even use other os i bet your just a bandwagon jumper

keep linux of the ps3 sony for the love of the maker

48

Had the beta, a complete waste of space. I already knew, and seen everything that was on there? Pointless….. This is why PS3 magazines are a dying breed, we have a thing called “the internet” now, its instant info 24hrs a day. Go check it out!

49

Poor attempt of old media trying to get with the times.

Do we have to have this debate in every blog post?

Go and visit blog.uk.playstation.com – see anything? No? That’s because there is no UK blog – blog.eu.playstation.com IS the UK blog, run by SCEE UK for the UK.

The reason that it uses the ‘eu’ address is because it’s also the catch-all for all other SCEE Countries that don’t have their own blog on account of English being the spoken language of 3 of them – Ireland, New Zealand, Australia – and a well taught/understood language in the others.

They have always said there will be both UK specific and more generic SCEE-wide news on this blog – so live with it or don’t visit and visit a 3rd party blog from your home Country. Maybe I should start visiting the French/German/Spanish blogs and post “Why no UK?” in every Country specific post.

SCEE UK do look like they are experimenting with addressing this by adding the Country tags at the top of the post, but it doesn’t look like they’re working yet, otherwise this would have just had the ...

I have a question about the 90 day membership – this works out at 12 weeks and 6 days – if I subscribe on the Thursday do I get 12 weekly episodes for my £8.99 or 13 episodes?

TheHappyTurtle 07 April, 2010 @ 22:52
52

@48

I don’t feed trolls. Sony currently under investigation from several countries trading standards organisations (including UK, US, Germany, Canada, France and Italy)

Will this also be available in the german playstation store?

So we get some biased reviews for 99p when we can get much more reliable sources on the internet for free?

almighty-slayer 08 April, 2010 @ 00:12
55

What makes you think they are biased? Future Publishing have nothing to do with Sony.

56

Sony, you have stolen features from my box. Give me back my money !!!

cool , hope it be on the saudi arabia store too ..

I read this was only for the UK initially although you’ve listed other countries in the post. I hope we’re being brought ahead of schedule instead of UK only :) Please clarify whether it’s UK only or not.

59

wt…!?
I thought PSN UK will be updated every weds as from April 4!???

£36 a years subscription seems alot of money tbh. may get the odd one if its something i cant see on the tinterweb.

61

why an earth would anyone want to see that GoW 3 review now? we all own ps3s so its pretty obvious that we’re aware of its success,

62

Ok let me get this right… Sony wants me to PAY to get information on games, films etc like interviews, first looks and reviews etc?

I can get all that stuff on websites like IGN.COM / Gametrailers.com / epicbattleaxe.com / etc and they get info on stuff like EVERYDAY. Ok so they might give you early codes for a demo or a DLC.. who cares haha it will be out for everyone else in a matter of hours or days later.

Im sorry but its a lame attempt at giving me content i already get and have been getting else where on a frequent basis for years. Ill just have to PAY for this version. Plus a lot of their “Reviews” are SURE to be a little bias.. i mean come on! Sony aint going to come out and say “go buy our lower than average game”, now are they?

Mehh… maybe this type of thing is made for casual gamers who dont know they can get constant updates like Trailers, Dev Diaries, Gamplay videos and well written reivews by simply going on the internet or magazines for that matter. Which btw you PAY...

OK OK ill stop..

should be free. first play (Quore) ist just another marketing tool.

64

AUGH! they’ve let the OPM team out of the basement, quick, somebody call the authorities! :)

sure, FirstPlay looks nice, but is it value? i found the adverts in the beta a bit intrusive, plus for 4.50 a month i can get a copy of PSM3 with it’s nifty DVD magazine and a guide book AND a full proper magazine…

65

@ almighty-slayer – the reason they are biased is because the team creating this are the same group of writers that produce the Official Playstation Magazine, just because they are now digital why would that make them less biased? they are Sony lapdogs at the end of the day.

Its the 8th of April where is it? Im waiting………? If anyone else has first play on their ps3 please tell me.

Is there a way (or plans to be a way) to sign up for a direct debit subscription either on PSN or on the Internet or will it be like a pre-paid voucher system you will need to renew every 90 days? also is there a system to inform the subscriber that their 90 day subscription is about to run out?

Stop complaining, get yourself an UK account and get it yourself. Easy. I get Quore from the US as well.

How pointless is this – I think I’ll just keep on using the internet.

SpiderMike_X 08 April, 2010 @ 09:39
70

Excellent. As well as (as much as) 2 month old information being produced monthly in magazine form, we’re now being offered (as much as)3 week old information in online form!!

Kudos to Future publishing and here’s to mediocrity!!!!!

71

The PSN Gold Subscription Era cometh…

Can FirstPlay please answer the following questions :

1.) Will the content available via FP be 100% exclusive to it or as I expect will the content eventually become available for all?

2.) Is this just an exercise in generating additional revenue from items that are typically FREE normall.

3.) This has all the hallmarks of an XBL sub and thus dividing the community into the and us? care to comment?

72

I was lucky enough to try out the beta and I can say that it is worth the wait. :)

Why did you not release FirstPlay in Ireland?

We get the OPM UK here and we speak the same language and the same audience so it would only be natural to release it in Ireland at the same time.

Morning all!

A few questions keep popping up, so I’ll answer those now but please feel free to ask any others.

FirstPlay works on an SDTV just like anything else on PS3 – not quite as pretty, but it functions perfectly. And yes, totally busted on the Wednesday Store update thing, we will be every Wednesday rather than Thursday :)

The other big points are the price and the quality. Of course the internet is an important source of information – at this stage I’m not sure I could find my trousers every morning without it – but we’re very confident we’re making something that’s better than anything out there in terms of editorial and production values. I’d urge anyone who disagrees to give it a go :)

And the price – for around 30 minutes of video content every week 99p seems very reasonable to me. On top of that there’s screenshots and featured downloads, and if you subscribe it’s even cheaper per ep.

Super keen to hear any and all feedback from you guys once it goes live later.

75

You can hear my feedback now, seeing as I had the beta.

Imagine a wet fart being played on a snare drum. That’s the kind of garbage we’re being introduced here to day, folks.

The magazine is out of date and subscriptions are waning so now they’re trying to peddle second hand information on the PSN.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE.

This app is massively overhyped and the only draw are these supposed betas, which will more than likely turn out to be betas of the most backwater games in PS3 developing history.

Fail.

76

I’m interested to see it and I’ll check it out but surely you could make more money offering this for free and being ad supported? Especially have a ready made gaming audience watching.

As for it being UK only, you have to realise the rest of the world is a lot more intelligent than us native English speakers (UK, US, Aus) and usually speak a multitude of languages including English, I imagine language is the reason you haven’t opened this up to the whole of Europe?

77

@75

The beta was old news because it was a beta, not a proper episode.

@ Nathan

Will todays be a Thursday, and all the other episodes on a wednesday then?

77.1

I’ll answer this one, seeing as the store is my domain ;)

Thursday publishes continue for a few more weeks, then from the start of May we start publishing on a Wednesday.

78

The problem is that although this on a pricing parity with shows on itunes there is already outstanding free shows available such as Area 5’s Co-op.

Good luck, I hope it works out, then I can ask you for a job ;-)

79

@ 77 – I wasn’t referring to the beta. I was referring to the blurb about today’s episode.

Apart from the Fifa info the rest is looking to be re-dredged information most of us can garner from our favourite gaming websites.

80

Yeah so some news is already available on some sites, but most people with a PS3 (like my dad for instance) need to trust on services like magazines, tv episodes, and things in the whats new section to know whats coming up on playstation. Plus, even for us, these brilliant writers at opm and firstplay will make the 99p worthwhile :)

81

GoW III has been out almost a month now. Anyone that wanted it would have bought it during that time. So what use is a month old review of a game most of the community has played.

The same can be applied to the JC2, although most the right thinking community know it’s garbage and Future are paid to say nice things.

Why not review and preview UPCOMING games as well as the coolest stuff COMING to PSN.

We don’t need a paid-for app telling us the coolest stuff happening now.

That’s why we have the blogs.

Nathan Ditum 08 April, 2010 @ 11:37
81.1

The timeliness of the content is a good point. As the first episode, this one has been through an extended delivery process – obviously it’s our aim to deliver reviews and previews of upcoming games, and we have plenty of these lined up over the next few weeks.

82

Actually, Just Cause 2 is an awesome game (i have it, it’s no gta killer but its very fun), and im too broke to afford gow3 yet.

this is very much content driven so it lives and dies on that id say , as there are tons of free reviews in hd plus hd screenshots all over internet for free , so no free goodies then i see no reason to buy and im sure a lot will feel that way too

84

And one last thing, my issue of OPM has just arrived through the door, and stuff like ‘first exclusive gta eflc review’ will most likely pass on to firstplay too.

85

So far the 99p on episode one would be wasted, had I not the common sense to stop lining Sony’s pockets every time they come up with some hair-brained scheme to attach micro-transactions onto the PSN.

It won’t be just 99p though, will it. They’ll tease next weeks episode. Trying to grasp onto exclusive info which most of us would have already found out in those 7 days.

If we know one thing, Sony are very bad at keeping secrets. And that inadequacy will spread to the exclusive info found in Firstplay, I’d wager.

86

@82 – OK you can’t afford to buy the game but would you really pay 99p to listen to a review that you could garner for free from more trusted sources? Say those on the PS forums that have played the game, or Joystiq, Kotaku, PS Lifestyle etc etc.

My point is give us content we probably WON’T find for ourselves, which will no doubt be an impossibility given the nature of the internet, which brings me to the main issue. Why waste time and resources on this when you haven’t listened to a lick of what the community wants.

How about a decent browser? Upgrade the Trophy system, PlayStation Home, In-Game music functionality, some form of cross-chat, messaging multiple users, sending more than one image per msg and so on and so on.

Stop peddling mediocrity and listen to the community, Sony!

87

@86 Ok, go and ask future publishing to make a decent browser, and such.

88

@Mike Thanks :)

From what I can see it looks like promotional content we have to pay for. I can’t see reviews and previews sponsored by Sony being totally unbiased or fair (would not look good to be any less than blown away by Heavy Rain or God of War).

Nathan Ditum 08 April, 2010 @ 11:42
89.1

This is where I disagree – being editorially independent is absolutely crucial to what we’re doing, because as you say no-one’s going to pay for purely promotional content.

As much as anything I think it shows that Sony is very confident in its line-up of games (as I think they should be – who wasn’t blown away by Heavy Rain and God of War III?). But while we’re here to celebrate the best of PlayStation, it’s also crucial that we advise our users when we think a game doesn’t meet expectations.

90

OK so Ireland has to wait for the UK on nearly everything including game release dates but when it comes to things like a Video Store and First Play we don’t get included. Yous are only hurting yourself’s mate.

This is another thing I won’t be paying attention to now. Sony wasn’t arsed releasing the video store here. Fine I’ll just keep Torrenting film for free and save lots of money. First play is not getting released here either I’ll just continue using Gametrailers and save me 40 euros a year.

Lol sometimes Sony just doesn’t get it.

91

Wow, three editors commenting in this post. Could you round up some people to address the firmware update perhaps? It’s done a lot more comments [and frankly is quite a bit more important than a video magazine] without any reply from Sony.

92

I’ll ask again, these questions seem more resonable to ask then… “OMG dis is deh shiznit!”

Nathan Ditum 08 April, 2010 @ 11:48
92.1

The downloadable content is likely to be a mix – things like themes or pieces of DLC which we create ourselves or have created for us are likely to stay exclusive, other things less so.

First and foremost FirstPlay is an editorial offering, though, so no – this is absolutely not about taking free things and charging. It’s about creating sharp, funny and enjoyable video content and putting on the Store at a very affordable price.

@ 90 totally agree with you dude , the higher ups running sony is why they are now after 3 years only starting to get a grip , stupid decisions constantly from sony these days

94

@ 90

So what’s your point??

Are you saying HAD Sony released these features in your territory you would have:

A) Stop torrenting for free and PAID for movies (Don’t think so somehow)
B) Stopped using gametrailers and instead fork out 40 euros a month? (that’s a bit backward)

Whining for the sake of it, I’d say.

95

Anyway I’m out. I’ve said my piece.

Bottom line – the more people pay out for this crap the more Sony will think it’s OK to keep DEVELOPING it.

Same for shoddy 360 ports, multiplatform titles tailored to the 360 and lazily developed on PS3 and minis.

96

gametrailers.com?

Darkscorpius 08 April, 2010 @ 10:59
97

I’ll probably check out the first few episodes to see how it goes. I’m kinda curious to see how it compares with Qore, more than anything else.

98

What time is the update today?

99

Will there be competitions at some point?

100

@94

What I’m saying is when the video store was announced to be coming in November I went out and bought 100 euro PSN cards to use for the video store. When it was revealed that Ireland wasn’t getting the store I said F it decided to stick with torrenting and save myself some money.

Ya see I would have stupidly wasted my money on these things just from the hype of having something new on the PSN but Sony F’ed it up again by delaying it in my country now I won’t be buying into the hype. Do you understand.

101

Couldn’t Future Publishing add this content onto its pointless demo disc it releases every friggin month with its rag.

102

@101 don’t worry about it mate, if you had have got the video store you would probably still be downloading your first 7GB rental!

I’ve got, I’ve used it and its crap. Slow, overpriced and completely unorganised.

103

@101 You’d be better off with a DVD/blu-ray copy of the movie of your choice. It’ll be cheaper, and it will play on pretty much any device you’d like.

104

Finally they changed the Contries tab in the post to reflect GB only…

@Apnomis
Yes we need to debate this… If this is UK blog posts then why is the EU flag on top and not the UK one? They could perfectly well make a seperate one for YOU! Seems like you need one.

wow !

all im looking at is negative comments galore??

im not sure why ? we are starting to get alot of extras yeah some better then others but no matter what sony try and do your all whinging jesus christ “spoilt brat syndrome” kicking in.

Keep up the good work sony ill be buying first play subscription and i know alot of people will be as well they just like to moan to get their voices heard lol

keep it coming

what’s the exclusive Just cause 2 download thats going to be available? also the theme looks decent. Shame no one seems to notice these though lol.

Also o-MrSpoz-0 this doesn’t concern you seeing as your from America so go post on American related stuff like Qore.

107

@107
Probably a parachute! We also get the “Ice Cream van” today..

108

this wont last cause everything is already on other sites. wot peeps are payn for is the betas and so called free downloadables lol.

why not just bring the official playstation magazine which is on newstands to the psn,the whole mag with ads etc,id pay for that, charge abit less since its not physical mag and ad some free stuff like betas and free wallpapers or stuff for home etc.

109

@109
Yeah like a .PDF mag scan would be nice.. I’d pay for that.

when will they add firstplay to the psn today? Will there be an update?

only way i see this firstplay lasting is if its getting introduced now to later be part of a psn premium option for subscribers so basically you pay say £40 a year for cross chat , voice messages , unlimited firstplay ,etc

112

This is very promising, and I will support this and subscribe.
And I trust there will be benefits, too? :P

@ 106 – So I can’t have an NA account and live in the UK??

Oh wait…yes I can.

Fool. Back under the bridge, troll.

114

Nope, still not convinced. I still have no reason to purchase this? Please try and sell it to me? As with HOME, it is something we don’t need, money we do not have to spend? I am open minded but this has no future. Please don’t add to the UK debt, the kids already do not have enough money. Naughty…

It would be nice to get answers to these questions.

1. Why is this not free for magazine subscribers?
Even Rupert Murdoch recognises they can’t double charge their loyal subscribers – “Access to the digital services will be included in the seven-day subscriptions of print customers to The Times and The Sunday Times.”

2. Will it work with remote play?

116

SCEE and it’s minions will NEVER answer any questions that people want answering on this blog.

It has never listend to its customer base nor give a monkeys.

Posting here is like trying to rehabiltate the majority of the prison population.

117

Billyboy – we’re currently looking at the logistics of special offers for mag subscribers, but essentially it’s not free because it’s a totally different product. The Times online reproduces the content of the paper almost exactly – we’re writing a great deal of new content every week and making tightly edited videos to fit. We’re coming up with new jokes and everything ;)

And slapnutz – guess you missed my reply on page 2!

Funny!! “Posted on 8 April, 2010 at 10:15 am by o-MrSpoz-0
Fail.”

119

:-D

ok so gow 3 was out 2 weeks ao , world cup demo is out today , so why buy this for a few bland jokes lmao SERIOUSLY

I hope we get this in the Netherlands soon.

Calamaharnarch 08 April, 2010 @ 12:22

It’s nice to hear decent and polite replies from Nathan Dithum, I’ll admit that.

On the OPSMUK Facebook page a few members face nothing but ridicule and abuse from many members AND staff. Practices which are somewhat mirrored in the magazine itself on the letters page.

Basically the Facebook group count themselves as self-important nobodies because the magazine prints their “witty” one liners and semi-informative reviews.

In fact, if you have a good look at the letters page in the magazine and compare it to the main contributors on the Facebook group you’ll see a lot of familiar names crop up.

It’s tough luck to anyone trying to integrate themselves into that little elite group as they wont stand for noobs and GOD FORBID you question the magazines integrity, as you are shown the door.

Can we expect the same from Firstplay…wait, what am I saying. Of course we can.

Andy-McK-4ever 08 April, 2010 @ 12:23
123

I’m definately getting this when it comes comes out in Ireland. I’ve been getting OPM UK for the last year now and I’ve found the humour really refeshing and the reviews to be pretty close to the truth (at least they’re less biased than Gametrailers and IGN). Don’t listen to all the people saying that it’s a waste of money and will be a failure. Just look at Qore in the USA. It’s been running for almost 2 years and it’s still going strong. Also, When you get some exclusive betas lined up, you will have a huge upsurge in subscriptions.

124

Yeah. Course, mate. Keep dreaming.

Andy-McK-4ever 08 April, 2010 @ 12:32
125

@123 It’s hardly dreaming. There’s alot of people in Europe who have wanted a version of Qore for a long time. Do you really think that they’re going to suddenly change their minds and decide not to get it now that it’s been provided for them?

126

Says someone that obviously hasn’t read ALL the posts regarding this announcement or taken a good look at various forums, PlayStation affiliated AND otherwise.

@122 I’ve heard from US players that qore is really good. If first play keeps up with plenty of content it should be good. i’ll be getting individual episodes which contain content that interests me. unfortunatly todays episode doesn’t interest me enough lol. looking forward to future episodes though.

128

You only have to see OPSMUK’s Facebook page to see how this is going to turn out. A good product eventually turning into a rag, with contributions made my elitist members given admin status ON that group who think it actually amounts to something.

The days of episodic gaming fodder, video or magazine, are well and truly done with.

And here I was thinking the PS3 was the cutting edge of gaming when we’re actually back in 2000 again!

VictorAnalogy 08 April, 2010 @ 12:38
129

If I’m being totally honest (which I always am) I’ll probably only get the editions that have a beta key or piece of DLC relevant to my interests attached, but I’ll be sure to peruse the entire article on those occasions.

130

@129

If this works anything like Qore the betas will only be available to subscribers, to stop people pulling the stunt you describe.

Even if they say otherwise it’ll be down to the game devs as to who is offered it. Otherwise they’ll have the entire community buying one ep to get into a beta. Hardly feesable.

Nathan Ditum 08 April, 2010 @ 12:52
130.1

There are no subscriber-only offers in FirstPlay, and actually no technical way we can make offers subs-only. Like I said, we’re primarily an editorial offering, and confident that we offer value for money aside from downloadable content.

VictorAnalogy 08 April, 2010 @ 12:50
131

@130 Well then, I won’t be picking up many episodes will I. ;)

o-MrSpoz-0 – I agree with absolutely everything you’ve posted here – keep it up.

133

Well they found a way for Qore so I’m sure the same resourceful individuals at SCEE could find a way here, as well.

With regard to technical aspects, I don’t really think Sony are concerned with technicalities like that. Ethically they can pretty much do as they like.

If they can think of a reason to make beta offers subscriber only then THEY WILL. Considering your repeated bleating that you’re an editorial offering only I would surmise that this is, once again, a situation where we are talking to the monkey, and not the organ grinder.

If you can categorically state that FirstPlay will NEVER offer betas to subscribers only then that might make a few people happy. Until then you only have good intentions in offering scripted information provided by your higher ups.

VictorAnalogy 08 April, 2010 @ 13:23
134

Thanks for the confirmation Mr Ditum. Who knows, maybe the editorial content that I’m presented with will persuade me to subscribe anyway? You seem pretty confident in it, and throwing yourself to the wolves in the blog is an encouraging sign that you believe in what you’re publishing.

To be honest, while I know it’s a dead horse I’m flogging…I’m reluctant to throw down on a three month subscription for something when Sony may well remove a feature that I am not willing to lose in a future update with little to no notice.

I’m a bit nervous of the PSN and Sony’s online model in general since they made promises in one month only to go back on them the next.

@ Nathan Ditum, I have some questions about FirstPlay…

1) The subscription says it is for 90 days, but that is only 12 weeks and 6 days, so does that mean it expires the day before episode 13 is published on the store? In other words how many episodes do you actually get to download in a 90 day subscription – 12 or 13?

2) Will things like the free DLC or demos or betas etc be available to everyone that buys that episode, or will it be like the Qore model where the best freebies are only given to subscribers?

3) What would you say sets FirstPlay apart from say the similarly structured DVD’s given away with magazines such as PSM3? Presumably the weekly nature would means it’s more up to date at least.

I currently subscribe to two magazines so would probably end up cancelling one if I did decide to subscribe to FirstPlay…

Nathan Ditum 08 April, 2010 @ 15:09
135.1

90 days is 90 days – any episodes which fall into that period will be yours for the £8.99. Spend wisely ;)

As I said above, the downloadable content will be available to all. No amount of forum mudslinging will change that ;)

As for what sets us apart from cover disc material – I like the PSM3 disc (I’ve been on their podcast!) and packaged with a magazine it’s a great extra. But that’s pretty randomly captured footage with an on-the-fly voice over, and our videos are very carefully edited with a custom-written script. There’s a huge gap between the two – and so there should be, if we’re hoping to stand on our own as an interactive video service :)

SilentShadow777 08 April, 2010 @ 13:38
136

i would say the first episode is worth a try, if you like the format then maybe consider a subscription, if not the forget about it.

1/ it sound like it will give 12 episodes, as 90days would exprire the day before the 13th episode

2/i would haope it should be subscribers, but this question was answered above – “There are no subscriber-only offers in FirstPlay, and actually no technical way we can make offers subs-only”

this doesnt seem fair, we have an EU version of CORE without any of the subscriber advantages that they recieve with beta trials

137

Sony and ‘Fair deal’?

138

is this the premiuem content weve heard so much about

139

Y cant sony make one playstation store for everyone.

Have you stopped using XBox & PC footage in FirstPlay yet?

I was a bit confused seeing it in the first Beta. I feel that content provided within a PS3 service should accurately reflect the final media on the console the user will be playing on.

BoH3MiaNRhAPSdY 08 April, 2010 @ 14:13

i also like to add i never heard exculsivity on the same console , between yakuza 4 released over in japan but not here , same with demon souls , its a exculsive title , i look then why sony a big huge gamin brand arent destroying the market well i finally see , ye just dont care or try , look at this video store supposley uk got but us in ireland didnt get , why we use the same rating and productions as uk and we have to wait for uk to get things before we do as a european country , i agree with dmx why cant you make 1 psn store for everyone , i garuntee japan doesnt go through these problems nor america .. get your act together soon as possible this is amateur stuff , i never subscribe to firstplay neither i can get trailers on youtube read reviews on ign and i dont bother with dlc very often , count me out were in recession and still ye ask for more money

giantkiller01 08 April, 2010 @ 14:23
142

Should have done the first one for free to give people a chance to try it out

143

FirstPlay, should be kind of like VidZone, you just download the application and not the videos, you should only be able to stream the videos, and instead of new content every week, replacing the old content, the content should just be added and added, again and again, so the old content don’t get deleted X)

Disappointing 1st episode, maybe i’ll check out some of the future ones.

145

@122 Dude. No just no.
On the Facebook page we WELCOME new people and they print the “regular” posters because they post on there a lot. If you post on there then odds on sooner or later you will get in the magazine. Don’t share your negative veiws with everyone because then people will not buy the magazine and not try firstplay out. Then a beautiful idea in practise will be forever lost to the masses. Plus to all those people who say the Betas were no good. They wern’t. They were Betas!!!!!!! It was old news to show what it can do. As Nathan said this weeks is slightly old news because they have had ages to do it. From next week it will be (hopefully) new stuff!

146

Ha Ha! The DLC for Just Cause 2 is a orange parachute, right? Oh dear……….

147

But Craig, he speaks the truth? A passionate post should not be seen as negative.

148

He doesnt speak the truth about the facebook page.

149

This exclusive stuff for things unrelated to specific games suck. Why I need pay for this for some exclusive Just Cause 2 DLC? Sorry but its retarded.

150

Did this article just swap places ?

Why this is only for Uk?
Why all new content only comes for UK?
Comics,FirstPlay…

No publishers on the other countries? :S

152

This looks pretty cool, ignore them other noobs.

Hey Nathan, I just bought the 90 day subscription, but today’s episode is not showing up in my download list. I don’t know what to do so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Nathan Ditum 08 April, 2010 @ 15:48
153.1

Think once you’ve purchased the 90 day sub you can head back into the Store and ep 001 will have a purchased symbol next to it, so you should be able to click and add to download list. Any good?

154

Not willing to spit on the guys behind FirstPlay, but this is essentially the European (well, UK) version of Qore, and as such it’s not going to be terribly exciting nor groundbreaking. US criticism is strong on the lightweight content of Qore, and I fail to see how FirstPlay is going to be any better.

Also, is there to be any advertisement in FirstPlay? Qore is choke full of them, which is unacceptable considering it’s already a paid-for service.

155

I understand why you’re having trouble getting the video store and such to other countries, but this should be available to the rest of europe. What exactly is it that’s stopping you from doing that?, with the video store I know it’s about distributers and release dates and such. (region codes to control content, release date, and price, my god I hate it)

156

got £1 spare in my psn wallet so ill try it out.

just downloading it now.

yesyesyes… i know sony dislikes the rest of EU…
However, Sony is a german mark.

My question, what does “later” really mean in bringing this experience to other countryies?

VidZone was promised to us later and it was almost a year without even a hint to when and if at all we can expect this service. The same with comics.

So what’s the main catch in releasing First Play in other countries?

159

I just bought the 3 month subscription and I noticed that the PlayStation Store allows me to buy another. I was wondering what happens if you buy another while you’re already subscribed. Does it overlap, effectively wasting the extra time, or does the second subscription start after the first has finished?

ProphetOfRage 08 April, 2010 @ 16:28
160

Wow! What a surprise. Yet another pay for feature.
Sony this desperate revenue seeking is getting tiresome and annoying and by now is totally transparent for all to see.
Please compensate us properly for the removal of an advertised and major feature.

This sounds very interesting and I don’t mind having a show on PSN when the price is as low as it is.
But why is UK always getting everything first? Is there a particular reason UK gets a prior on most things regarding PSN?

When POLAND???????????????????????

165

I can attest to 122’s post RE: the Facebook group. They ARE a bunch of savages over there. I was posting for about 2 months or so and I had a few disagreements with some of the reviews.

I must have been out of my mind to think I could have an opinion over there as I was dashed all over the wall like a cat in a dustbin bag.

Once you go against the grain there is no way back either. I sent a message to one of the admins on there. Liam, I think his name was. I simply explained my views. I wasn’t derrogatory and I wasn’t abusive. Next day I was banned from the group and roughly a week after that I had my FB account disabled.

When I emailed a buddy at FB I was told someone on the OPSMUK group had made a complaint.

So yeah. Savages. Swear off their group, their magazine and this new chance to peddle cash from us, as far as I’m concerned. I’d rather donate 99p a week to a charity than line their pockets.

any chance of cutting file size down , 1 .2gb is huge for people who want to keep on hdd , put me off buyn

the future.. that could be be in a second or in 30 years, doesn’t make a difference since it isn’t fair anyway.

Im sorry, Im just going to come on in here and say how much I love this. :) I got the beta, and liked the idea. So only bought the one episode this week and after loving that I can seriously see me paying for the subscription fee. And yes,I do take an evil pleasure in knowing its only for the UK, Which, seriously, i can see as unfair!

169

@165

Nice to see you’re still trolling us, Mike. Or are you still “Jason”? ;)

170

Hey Nathan,

Looks very interesting, but 1GB does seem a lot, do some episodes vary in size? And also roughly, how long do they take to download?

Thanks.

Nathan Ditum 09 April, 2010 @ 10:02
170.1

The size is pretty fixed, for those asking. Being in high definition is key to what FirstPlay is all about, so the large file size is a necessary evil.

Download times vary depending on your connection. On our frighteningly quick work connection it takes 10 minutes or less, at home it takes me 35 minutes.

171

I’ve subscribed and watched the first episode. Fantastic stuff. I look forward to more exclusive downloads in the future but the reviews, previews, screenshots with commenting and other videos are all very well done. Reminds me of some of the gaming programs I’d watch on Bravo as a kid. The adverts are well done too. Not long enough to be annoying.

I look forward to future episodes.

Goodness gracious me, we seem to have a foul bunch of ‘people’ in here!
Yes we get it, everyones mad at Sony for Firmware 3.21 taking away ‘other OS’, but let’s be honest who of you actually used it!?
Hmmm!?
I thought as much!
So grow up and get off the “everyones angry at Sony so it makes me look cool by joining in” bandwagon.
It’s neither clever, gonna acheive ANYTHING and it’s not the place to even be chatting about it!!
Much love lol

As for ‘FirstPlay’ these guys ( and I’m sure girls ) have taken their time to make some finely crafted reviews that you’d normally either read online by amatuers, or pay £4+ for a magazine once a month!
If it’s not your thing then fine, be shushed and go back to your interweb productions!

I’ll be subscribing as I’m one of those people who pay £4+ a month to read a mag lol so £9 for 3 months to WATCH the review I’d READ a month later ,,, no brained really!

Now, Mr Nathan Ditum, if you fancy replying with a code for some freebies ;-)

Who’s in charge of getting FirstPlay out to other countries? Is it the OPM team?

175

@173 We used to like Ireland, but we don’t give them things anymore.

:P

First play is good idea. now i am thinking why couldn’t sony do the same thing but with films and music. Foe films how about “Film first” weekly stuff on movie/cartoon/tv series reviews, trailers, seek peeks, behind the scenes the whole shabang.

Bought the subscription and I kind of wish I hadn’t. The video quality is inconsistent, the content is out of date, and I don’t really appreciate having to sit through an advertisment EVERY TIME I CHOOSE A DIFFERENT ITEM.

Just watched first episode, well worth the (hardly bank breaking) 99p IMO. The content is slightly old but as long as future episodes have up to date stuff then I don’t really care.

Always loved OPM so will hopefully like FirstPlay.

179

I like the magazine and I enjoyed the first episode of FirstPlay. I would prefer to be able to skip the adverts sooner but never mind. The format and interface are very nicely done and the HD videos and screenshots are great. I also like the fact that it’s a rolling three month subscription rather than a yearly one.

180

bought the 90 90 day subscription last week for this. I think that this is going to be a good addition to the store personally. One other thong that I bought this for is that I no longer buy any of the mags so will be nice to see and hear reports on the new games.
