I signed up for a 3 month Plus sub just to play this and it’s been totally worth it. I’ve never been keen on MMO games but I think it helps that I’m a fan of the comics here and the more console like approach to play. Having quite a bit of fun despite the system freezing now and then (which is fine cos it’s a beta and also when you reload it puts you pretty much exactly where you were before the freeze, not having to redo much if anything at all). I must have played it for 12 hours or so yesterday. Only reason I’m not on it now is that I have a cold and I feel too drowsy to sit right at the TV to read tiny fonts. I’m not yet sure if I will be a subscriber to the game at this stage as still looking for a job.

Really enjoying the beta, can’t wait for release :)

Any idea what the actual subscription fee for this will be in £?

Some major suggestions I sent which i hope the team look at

Its a great game but I feel the chat system in the game could do with some work. I feel very separated from the players around me when playing as the text chat is very hidden.

this is a really good mmo a few graphical glithes but im sure they will be sorted by release definatly gonna buy

I agree with XJaguar12X – Very good and I’m really enjoying it so far but my main itch is the chat system. The graphics could also do with a little polish but other than that it may well be a day one buy for me! Got some ideas I want to submit but they seem to be heading in the right direction.

Also like adz2k7 asked – any idea of the subscription cost in GBP?

So if I sign up to PS+ now I will immediately be able to download the beta?

i really want to play it, but the download feature within the game is so ridiclous.
Why didn’t they make it just a regular PSN game ??!

its like playstation home but with the ability to fly, except no clear structure, no waypointing to objectives and no character. had more fun watching it download 10gb than playing it… and having tried to read any of the ui text has left me needing glasses

@ Lymmusic 10GB ?! Ouch I thought about downloading it, but now not a chance.

looks great, I have a question tho – can other accounts on my PS3 create their own superhero with the beta!?

thanks in advance :o)

After the impressive intro movie I must admit I found the gameplay quite uninspiring, and was actually quite shocked at the bland enviroments and quality of the graphics. I certainly wasn’t expecting Uncharted, but some of the later PS2 titles are of a similar standard.

Is there a sub free single player mode? I like the idea of creating my own villain and running about the place, but I can’t afford to be paying more than box price for a game. If there’s a single player mode without the online fee then I’ll get it.

14

@8 It’s a standard MMO download installer and patcher, it’ll check the version of the game everytime you log on as they change so often!

@11 Only the PS+ user can play it, I tried on my other account and it just kept asking for the code from the box. This could have been a fluke but I doubt it x

Best MMO I’ve ever played. 100% getting the retail version. :)

Shame it didn’t come out this year, there would probably have been some sort of Christmas event right? :(

What will the subscription cost in the UK?

17

I was told its same price as WoW

18

Does the game access occur under the existing PSN system (so, you’re signed in to PSN, then access the icon, and you’re all set to play), or have you bolted in other, external accounts?

19

*sigh* costs to play online gaming? They should really consider another way to make money, maybe then panorama wouldent throw all of its documentries around

its ok but dont think its worth a full price and def not subscriotion prices

21

Played it for a few hours so far and it’s certainly a good game, however it’s not good enough to persuade me to join the P2P model.

On the F2P MMO’s I play I tend to pay far more in the optional cash shops than I ever would with a P2P system but it’s knowing that I can pay what I want, when I want and still be able to use my character [stopping paying doesn’t remove access as with P2P.]

It’s also the knowledge that I get the same value for money as everyone else instead of P2P where the more you play the game the cheaper it is effectively and time away from the game is wasted money.

If DC Universe Online had gone F2P with a cash shop for perks/clothing/other aesthetic options I would be starting splaying it from day one of official release and likely spend more than a years subscription off the bat, as it is I won’t be playing after the beta ends.

Besides, there’s just something wrong with selling the game AND a subscription, choose one NOT both.

22

It reminds me of City of Heroes but so much better as get to interact with all my favorite DC characters. I can’t recommend this enough.

Thanks for the access to the Beta and will definitely be signing up for P2P when it goes live.

For those that are unsure about P2P, it has become a staple for PC gamers for years and they have no problem. Yes there are F2P games out there but most are poor copies and not worth your time to play, the only exception being Guild Wars. If you don’t want to pay then don’t play.

23

@13 I believe it will be a one off monthly payment for all access.

In MMO’s you get PvE and PvP, so no set single player game. In DCUO the PvE is played with all other players on the server so can help out with certain missions. I haven’t come across any solo instances yet but I believe there are some.

Hope that helps

I love DC characters immensely, have all my life. Was really excited by this game, but it sounds like it’s going to be a money pit to play and frankly it doesn’t sound like good value. After playing it for a year I’d probably have spent enough cash that I could’ve bought 4-5 other games or 100 classic back-issues of actual comics.

Sadly, I have to totally agree with #21 above. That kind of model might’ve had me interested. That or a good single player story, but this game doesn’t even have one.

I’m sure there’s going to be a big segment of potential gamers for this title just walk away.

I loving it, but still dont know if i will pay to play, depends on the price. The problem being sometimes i just wouldnt be in the humor and just play pes or some other game, and then i will feel bad for spending money on it and not playing it.

26

The chat system has some updates coming in the next patch along with the “freezing” and graphical issues.

I’m a huge comic book reader and a hardcore gamer but this game just leaves me stone cold.

It’s an MMO. It’s “pay to play”. It looks dreadful (despite that awesome trailer).

That’s three strikes for me.

@Lymmusic #9

No clear structure? no waypointing to objectives? I think you might want to invest some time in understanding the menu system.

Open the journal and activate one of the missions you have come across, go to the Metropolis and follow a waypoint, if not… select the globe tab and cycle through to your desired destination and follow the waypoint.

What is DC Universe Online?

It’s a shambles at the moment. That’s what it is. OK so you can play it and enjoy it, to a point, but there is so much wrong with it that it beggars belief that this will actually make it to gold on time. Yes, I’m aware it’s a beta, but still. I was expecting a little more polish than this. Firstly half the on screen assets pertain to the PC GUI. You have “press F1” and some such to do certain chat related things, which is no mean feat and there’s numerous other occasions where this happens. Secondly the whole presentation is marred with outstanding amount of pop-in and pop-up. Textures sometimes taking as long as 30 seconds to actually render. The soundtrack and speech skips, objects to complete quests are just missing in one instance, I have two female NPC’s with female voices, multiple counts of freezing requiring me to reboot time and time again.

30

I’ve made all this information throughout my time to the proper beta forums, and not the community ones tacked onto the EU forums as that does nothing in my opinion, so hopefully a let will get done between now and release, starting with some actualy updates to the beta. Looking at the official forums it seems this client is the same one the Americans go, with very little improvement. Doesn’t bode well for development IF that’s the case.

I like a lot about it. The Hero/Villain customisation, the trivia and history quests, the attention to detail, the actual levelling up and expansion of mission quests. It’s all great on paper but it has a lot to do if they expect me to pay ANY kind of subscription.

Just my 2 cents.

i love this game, last MMO i played and enjoyed was city of heroes, when i heard this was coming to PS3 as a console exclusive (also released on PC format) i was excited, and it dont dissapoint, ive mainly been chilling around metropolis, the areas huge.

city of heroes had tons of zones but they were capped off by walls, metropolis is soooooooooooo big its crazy… load times in your selected zone are virtually non existant, the only load screens appear if you wanna travel to gotham or watchtower, even when entering missions load times are non existant, which is a refreshing change from city of heroes.

all in all apart from a bug here and a crash there, this MMO is going to RAWK…

ive heard rumors the reason behind the GUI is because PC users and PS3 users are going to be able to be on the same server… and they are allowing pc players to use a DS3 controller if they wish…

if we get that, pc users with ps3 users, i think this could achive a very high state in the MMO universe.

I’m really enjoying I’m not to happy about the $14.99 (since we don’t have an official GBP price) a month, its a little too much when I’m already paying for a Playstation Plus+ subscription. I would like to see them either include it in the PS+ subscription, give us a major discount (I’m talking $5 a month or something ) or make ut F2P with micro-transactions. Me buying this game which I really want to do because I think it’s awesome so far and will continue to be banks on them making the right decisions about the subscription model.

33

Level 20 is max in beta. Level 30 is max in retail. Far too low. Cant be bothered with this game no more now.

Looks like the message I typed yesterday didn’t register so I will try again. I have 3 characters and am enjoying it. I hear of an update coming with social features but no date for it. What I really want though is information on retailers for the Limited Editions mentioned on this blog a few months ago for our little countries.

Hi Elliot.

Q1) Will a subscription be free to PlayStation Plus users?

If not I hope this comes with 3 months subscription included minimum, and a low yearly cost. There’s no point pricing the subscription so high that only the most dedicated DC fans buy it.

@29 and other people complaining about the technical quality:
A beta is NOT a game demo (although they are nowadays used for promoting a game). It is an unfinished product that requires work to take it to a completed state. If you spot tech problems, these are probably being worked on but let the development team know on the beta forums.

The beta was not fun for me. I had to delete my KZ3 beta just for this. When i tried to play it, it begins with some weird tutorial i think and i couldnt even go online. I deleted it right away. Seriously 15gb, my ps3 even had out of memory and i couldnt process more becuse it said to low space.

although i am very much enjoying the dc universe beta i will not be picking up the retail version , 14.99 a month i be refusing to pay with all the other games coming out in 2011

I’d like to play it, but it freezes and reboots my PS3 constantly. Stock standard 120GB Slim.

39

I had to give up on this without even playing it. Didn’t like sitting and watching a single screen while it did some sort of diagnostic test for 25 minutes, without any idication of what was happeining.

Perhaps I missed something pivotal here, but really, not going to bother trying again. Shame.
