DC Universe Online is the first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game on PlayStation 3 and the first online game based in the DC Universe, allowing fans to create their own superhero or villain while joining forces with their favorite DC Comics characters such as Superman, Batman and The Joker to aid in saving – or destroying – the planet.

To capture the true essence of the DC Universe and its iconic characters, Sony Online Entertainment tapped the top talent at DC Comics, including legendary artist and co-publisher of DC Entertainment, Jim Lee, who served as executive creative director for DC Universe Online and provided the art style for the game. Famed DC Comic Book writers Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman were tasked with establishing the back-story of the Universe and creating thousands of compelling story arcs, epic quests and action-packed in-game events. For example, players might be tasked with rescuing Batwoman from the fear gas that Scarecrow has unleashed in Gotham City’s sewers, or battle Power Girl as they work with Lex Luthor to create an army of mutants out of Metropolis citizens.

anybody who buys this for ps3 is insane your beter off getting pc and lifetime subscribtion cause you pay way 2 much for ps3 they should lower the cost for ps3 but hell they won’t.

Would have love too buy this but the monthly fee is a little too high.

No this one ain’t for me.. the subscription is just to expensive. And there are so many must haves on my list already. Dead space 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Mortal Kombat, Resistance 3, Rage to name a phew.

Is the subscription will be available in the Polish PS@Store on PS3?

Way too expensive!

60 euros to buy the game.
And 12 euros/month to play the game.

hey Elliot, how come we scandinavians cant buy our PC version of DC universe on STEAM? Will it ever be available on steam in scandinavia, it seems scandinavia is the only place in the world that you cant buy it and i thought since you where EU product manager you would have the answer….I want mah DC universe via steam please….thanks

Having never played an MMO before the beta of this obese very impressed with what I experienced. What I’m trying to say is, I’ll be getting this today. Lol

From an iPhone, enough said.

plzzzzzzzzzzzz can the psn plus team respond to this, will plus members get any sort of discount on dc universe.ie discount on the monthly subscription.i had the beta and loved this game its such a shame the price is out of my range ,im sure u could get some sort of discount for plus members ,thanks

10

this game was good in the beta, I really liked it but the monthly fee is just too high (not unexpected by soe monthly fee standards) hopefully the lack of ps3 buyers will lower the price.

Who ever buys this for ps3 and pays the monthly fee has more money than sense.

11

I loved the beta and would like to buy it today but I wont.

Not until someone tells me that once the free month is over I can have a lifetime subscription…

I hoped that Sony would have solved this problem cause obviously it will cost them many customers, but as it seems we had no news on the matter :(

not out until the 20th here in Aus. As awesome as this game looks, i wont be paying AU$99 for the game + an undisclosed AU$ monthly access fee.

13

i would like to be playing this today however for some strange reason the ps3 version is not available in the Uk (part of the pal region) till friday. sucks cause everyone else gets a 2 day head start

Back in the summer you promised us news on the collector’s edition and various pre-order bonus promotions, none of which was forthcoming. Why was this? America and other territories have had these promotions, seems a little unfair on us in the EU.

15

The joker seems to have made the decision on pricing.
Seriously, 13euros a month? Are you guys on crack?

Was gunna get this too but due to the pricing to subscribe.. [DELETED] no.

Why get a Life Sub Anyway what happens if later you get sick bored of it other games come along will ppl be playing all the time.

i‘m holding of till after DS-2 maybe ME-2 as well but i‘m saveing up for a HD Telly. :)

Played the BETA, enjoyed it, but not enough to pay monthly for it.
I would have expected PS+ members have some kind of discount or free subscription, but alas our loyalty is not rewarded on this occasion.

There is no way I’m subscribing to ANY game, no matter what it is! I buy my games to play for life, I’m not being charged a rental fee after the fact! Throw me some paid-for-DLC and I might get it if it’s worth the price, THAT is how you support games and make more money post-release… but a monthly charge? No no no no no no no no NO.

You’d get more people playing online if you ditched subscription fees OR had a “one-for-all” subscription fee across multiple services MAYBE.

Personally, some months I get to play games a lot, others I don’t, I’d HATE to pay for a month and then not get to use it, so I’m steering well clear of this model.

When even established MMOs such as World of Warcraft have a subscription which is cheaper, I feel that I cannot justify paying a higher sub for a new MMO, regardless of how enjoyable I found the beta testing. If the sub was around the £5.99 per month mark, I’d consider it. I may have considered a lifer subscription (I did similar on Lord of the Rings and have gotten more than my monies worth over the years), but I don’t see DC Online lasting long.

Heck, Champions Online on the PC is going free to play on 25th January, so if i want superhero action, I think I’ll reinstall that.

21

@19 i think you have missed the point of what an MMO actually is?

@20 last time i checked world of warcraft is still £9.99 a month sub so how is it cheaper than DC universe?

Shadowdragoon 12 January, 2011 @ 12:04
22

As this is a SOE game, Is the PS3 version covered by SOE allaccess subscribtion that I allready use for EQ2 or?

scouserontour 12 January, 2011 @ 12:05

Ok people have i missed something. They kept the “pay a monthly subscription” on the down low. You dont see any of that on the description above / trailers ….and i was on my way out today to buy this!!! Plus this game should be available to buy / download on the psn….is it???

I don’t get it that the price is as WOW, This game does not have the same big fan base as WOW, still you guys haVE the same price and think it’s going to be a success?

25

good luck with your supscription fee Sony.., i can already see this game dying on ps3…, just like few other exclusives in the past.
Thanks

26

@23 its been well documented on many occasions and blog post and if you had gone into the store today it would have been written al over the box that there is a subs.

@24 Its the same price as WOW but like any fanbase it starts small, when WOW started it wasent cheap and over the years the sub fluctuated till they got to the magic figure of £9.99 a month that the customers were happy with.

I swear some people who post comments on here are just really stupid. Anger at a poor store update and lack of certain features on ps3 i can understand. Hating on a ps3 exclusive MMO that charges a monthly fee is retarded. no ones forcing you to purchase the game and no ones forcing you to pay the price of admission. Just cause you dont want it many others will DC universe will grow over time. either give it a chance or shut up. The subs there to stay and stop trying to get it for free. you wouldnt go to resturant and expect a discount or free meal for nothing would you?

Being behind the curve on this (UK release is Friday) is incredibly frustrating. :(

28

@25 another idiot. exclusives dont die. in fact the only bad exclusive Sony released was Haze and that was a third party game. Do you hate Sony enough for it to fail at every corner? if so then perhaps you might stop posting on here and purchase that other console that has the same mentalality as you.

Shou_Kobayashi 12 January, 2011 @ 12:17

The monthly fee is too high for me. Keep it low and I’ll gladly hop onboard.

I didn’t join plus to pay additional subs on top. I simply dont agree with the concept. So i’ll pass on this one.

At least it’s not realsed by EA – they’d switch the server off as soon as the money slowed down. LOL

And for the record WoW is £8.99/month at its most expensive (single month sub), so this costs more.

‘Now plus 8 days’ until you can get if for PS 3 in Australia….

@26: An MMO with a monthly fee is fine. But they charge a full retail game price (60 euros).
WoW is just 15 euros for the game. And then you pay for playing.

If you want to charge monthly, you have to keep the costs for buying the game low.

But: time will tell if this is going to be a success…

34

@28 you are an idiot ok.

it is a bad move by Sony and for that reason this game will not do great as it could… at least on ps3.

35

@30 you joined plus just to avoid subs on games. wow man your special.

@31 so your quibbling over £1 ?

almighty-slayer 12 January, 2011 @ 12:29
36

Lol at you whining people complaining that an MMO has a subscription fee.

37

Could you not find a PS3 pack shot?
This is the PlayStation Blog right? XD

38

@38 actually its a smart move by Sony to bring a MMO on console to encourage MMO players to purchase a ps3, it also encourages other MMO developers to look further than just the PC and also give us current ps3 owners something different to normal games. how is that a bad move?

@33 i’ve payed just £30 pounds for mine which is exaclty the RRP for Cataclysm which is and expansion pack and not the full game.

Get over yourself Dante, not everyone has access to the net all the time so stop playing the higher power and calling people idiots.

I’m sorry Mr. Linger, but whomever you hired to do product research into subscription based console gaming needs to be fired. DCUO will unfortunately have fallen into faded memory within 3 weeks, particularly as you missed a November launch and the natural crazy buying.

“But November was crowded enough!” I hear Mr. Linger cry. So releasing DCUO on a format in January, with DS2, LBP2, and ME2 as competition is better? You’ve got KZ3 next month too.

“But there aren’t the typical MMO demographic we’re aiming at!” Mr. Linger Yells.

So the hardcore and casual gamer isn’t your demographic? Just MMO PS3 players? Wow, you’ll sell a lot. You expect gamers in this current financial climate, to take £10 a month away from buying a NEW game? You honestly believe anyone is going to do that? And do you honestly believe that you’ll make enough money back through PC sales? 10 years ago maybe, but not now? Cataclysm is a one off…well, until the next WOW expansion.

I see you starting a new job this y...

I see you starting a new job this year Mr. Linger. Some people are going to loose a lot of money over this, and they’re going to be looking at you for a reason why.

41

@ 39 okay fair enough how would you like me to address stupid people in a non offensive way? People have to be stupid to believe the can get free access all the time to a subscription based service and ill informed if they think all PS3 exclusive games die on release.

@38: The RRP for the basic WoW-game is 14,95 euros.

But when I buy it together with Cataclysm expansion, it’s still cheaper than DCUO.

@35: No quibbling, I’m in. Just stating a fact for the discussion.

@42: You have to buy all THREE expansions to get the full Cataclysm content.

44

@42
WOW RRP £14.99
WOW CATACLYSM RRP £29.99
WOW WRATH OF LITCH KING RRP £29.99
WOW BURNING CRUSADE RRP £29.99

you do the math.

Shou_Kobayashi 12 January, 2011 @ 12:49
46

World of WarCraft Battle Chest (Vanilla WoW + Burning Crusade) 19,99 €
World of WarCraft: Wrath of the LichKing 22,34 €
World of WarCraft: Cataclysm 26,95 €

= TOTAL = 69,28 €

DC Universe Online 54,99 €

= TOTAL = 54,99 €

Difference 14,29 €

Prices taken from Amazon.de

Both come with a free month of subscription, but WoW has for 15,00 € more way MORE content ;) Now you do the math :D

Fee’s and no trail for the PSN peasants mean I’m staying well clear.

in addition to comment 46

In addition you can test WoW for 10 days for free and can continue your character. I don’t see any trial for DCUO anywhere so now I have to blindly buy it

Dante you ROCK. Hit me up on the PSN.

See the problem is most of the poorer percentage of the PSN community think Sony are a charity and should placate their student income with freebies, ad-infinitum.

I got news for you. Sony run a business. They churn out quality product in order to make a profit so they can continue…..churning out quality product.

And don’t come back at me saying I have my head up Sony’s a-hole or some such other trolling bile. I have just as much beef with the company as the next guy. Genuine beef. Not the “whererezzz cross chatttzzz and WhEn PoLAaaaAnd!” repetitiveness that gets churned out on here.

At the end of the day Sony aren’t telling you to buy this. If some of you don’t like it, fine, say so. That’s your right to reply. But MMO’s run on subs. Its just that some of you are too young to remember when PC gaming ruled over console gaming with a iron fist and most of us were subbing up to WoW while the rest of you asking your parents why Rayman’s joints aren...

Roll with the times. Suck it up, and other such patronising comments.

Guys, hope you reply or at least read, can we have this as a download from PSN?

I know it’s 30GB, but it’s 30GB on PC too! I can easily download that in a day and don’t mind it taking up my harddrive space.
