Online Storage Available To PlayStation Plus Members From Tomorrow

New PlayStation Plus Content

In response to overwhelming demand from the PS3 community, we are pleased to announce that Online Storage for Game Saves will be available to PlayStation Plus members from tomorrow, 10 March, allowing you to store your game saves for peace of mind and easy access from any PlayStation 3 system in the world.

After downloading PS3 System Software Update 3.60, Plus members will have access to 150MB of space and will be able to store up to 1000 PS3 game saves.

To do so, simply highlight the game save you want to store in the [Saved Data Utility (PS3)], press the triangle button to bring up the options, select “copy” and then select “Online Storage” as the destination. In turn, you can access your Online Storage list via [Saved Data Utility (PS3)] when signed into PlayStation Network on a friend’s PS3 and download your stored game saves to carry on your game from where you left off.

If the developer has chosen to implement copy protection on their game saves, you can still copy those files to Online Storage but there will be a 24 hour period, after each save, before you can then download them on any PS3.

Hopefully that tells you everything you need to know about this new, much requested service. If you do need any more information, the official PlayStation forums have posted a guide, and ask us in the comments as always.

VictorAnalogy 09 March, 2011 @ 17:31

A-to the-mazing news. Loving my PS+ Subscription. Worth every penny.

EFF YES! Great work, Sony.

nemesisND1derboy 09 March, 2011 @ 17:32

Awesome feature guys, pity though, I could have used this last week when my 60GB died. Thanks anyway!

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:41

ah, sorry about the timing. won’t happen again though!!!

Thats a nice addition, will be handy for me as I travel back home a lot and won’t have to worry about game saves.

Awesome Sony!

DANTHEMAN121 09 March, 2011 @ 17:33

SWWWEEEEET EPIC news guys this is awesome
great work SCEE team

just have 1 question will u be able to back up PSHome data as well?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:42

Hi, currently its only PS3 software data it will back up,so not Home data

Hell yeah!
Damned awesome update, first thing I’ll be doing is going through and backing up all the saves to those games I’ve just finished.

Only thing that could improve this would be to tie this in with the Auto-Download feature, so that it’ll go through and auto-backup any changed save files for you.

Keep up the good work guys. :D

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:43

Thanks, I will pass this suggestion on as we are hopeful they will be able to update this feature. Can’t promise though ;-)

Quick question, will this change how we login to PSN? Will I be able to go to a friends house, log in, load up my save and play or will I have to make an account on his PS3 etc.?

I am on PS3 three so running out of activations!

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:46

Hi, as long as you are just logging in to PSN on your friends PS3 then it won’t effect your activations. This will only happen if you then startdownloading things on your account on his machine.

will there be any other things in the firmware james?

like letting us use more of the comment box space?

oh and btw the ninja trooper avatar in the plus section doesn’t work when downloaded it just gives an error when you try to use it

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:47

This is the main feature of the update, I will look into the Avatar issue for you, cheers

Great addition but cant we have an option just to sync all saves, for quick and easy backup, like the trophy sync?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:48

currently no, but its something we will look into

AllytheBruce 09 March, 2011 @ 17:36

Absolutely brilliant, plus does really get better as it goes on.
Bit late for the ones I lost due to previous ylod’s but ah well.

Does this include ps2 and ps1 memory card data?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:49

Hi sorry its was a little late for you! It only covers PS3 game saves, not PS1 and 2

PaddyCharlie 09 March, 2011 @ 17:37

Excellent work cheers

unbelieveable, i just had to change my pants. great news for everyone and now plus has a valuble selling point and use. Now if you listerned to everyone about this feature what about X-game chat hey?

muchos gracias.

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:50

Glad you like it, please use this as an indication that if you ask for a feature and we can get it to you, we will always try to do it

OMG IT‘S TRUE I just jizzed in me pants so does it require a 3.60 i haven’t read the whole article but Yes it want i wanted now FF13 wont be a Pain no more.

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:51

Glad you like it ;-) Its included in 3.6 so you will need to update your firmware tomorrow.

This is great but how about a “Copy mulitple” like there is in photos and so on… Would be very handy ;-) I wanna upload more than one save at a time

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:51

There may be scope to update this feature so I will pass this on. Cheers

RedBullRacer 09 March, 2011 @ 17:40

I love you guys! This has made my day, finally I can backup my Dragon Age saves and play the game without fear of losing them again! I don’t care if my PS3 dies now, I’ll just buy another one. No more worrying about losing gamesaves, thank you SONY!!!

nice, i got a cheap second ps3 recently and i use that in the bedroom, transferring saves when i want to play a game in bed, don’t pretend like you wouldn’t like to do that, has always been a bit of an annoyance.

now i can play in the bedroom finish, upload the save then download in the living room and continue playing, certainly getting great value for my plus sub now.

it would be nice if everybody could use this but i can understand why it’s restricted to plus subscribers.

shaolinsword 09 March, 2011 @ 17:41

I guess I better renew my sub then

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:53

haha, that’s what i like to hear! ;-)

YES! I will never have to worry about YLOD again! You should have done this years ago, but alas, it’s still good news!

Please consider extending the 150mb limit, because some games force audio files into the save file, bumping their size by quite a lot.

OMG IT‘S TRUE I just ji*** in me pants so does it require a 3.60 i haven’t read the whole article but Yes it want i wanted now FF13 wont be a Pain no more.

had to post again moderation strikes, now More great features Imports for plus members maybe for E3 perhaps ;)

madshaun1984 09 March, 2011 @ 17:43

So in otherwords, renew or lose your ****, well planned sony, your bound to get a few renewals because of it, but it certainly isnt what most people want!! Cross game chat is likely still top of the list, well after this, the new (forced, non deletable) icons on the xmb and the facebook intergration seen in earlier updates.

Awesome. Might consider getting PS+ now, only thing keeping me back is that free games expire if you don’t renew immediately for EU + users.

Oh my God!!! Thank you guys :D An AMAZING feature :D Can’t wait :):)

not that i want it, but i think the demand for cross chat was higher. why dont sony just let people know they cant implement it.

If you could combine save syncing and trophy syncing as an automatic process which happened when you told your ps3 to turn off via the pad that would be fantastic, a slight delay in it turning off for peace of mind against losing stuff to YLOD like i have twice would be amazing.

Hey James, is there also a possibility for you to set us up an auto-backup feature?

For example, when the PS3 turns itself on for Auto Downloading patches and demos from Plus, it could also upload our last 10 save files or something like that.

It would be VERY convenient.

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:55

Something we will def be looking into for the next update of the feature

addyjones1234 09 March, 2011 @ 17:47

Brilliant stuff guys.

So awkward copying backwards and forwards with 2 PS3s :)

Anything else in 3.60?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:58

Glad it will help. this is the main feature of 3.6

But do we have to press triangle on each single save and copy it? Won’t there by any “copy all” option?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:58

something we will look into for the next update

@27 – awesome idea.

Will it take data like Demons Souls?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 17:59

any PS3 game save data up to the limit of 150M

Ahh Yes it does have 3.60 update kotaku was right after all Kudos James.T my FF13 save before it was corupted was kb not MB so i take it the 150mb limit is a few different saves i can live with that. :D

obiadekanobi1980 09 March, 2011 @ 17:49

According to a Tweet my MusterBuster, some PS3 saves can’t be backed up using this feature – “it depends on the devs”.!/MusterBuster/status/45540291482107904

In which case, while this is a nice feature, it still doesn’t solve the issue of how to back up individual locked saves.

Also, it would be nice if this feature was made available separately at a reduced rate, for those of us who don’t want the rest of the Plus features.

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:02

There are currently no PS3 games (unless a save is over 150MB) that can’t be stored on here. If the dev has chosen the copy protected then there is just the 24hr period before you can access the save.

awsome. psplus.. you just got one more year out of me :)

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:02

good to know ;-)

At last. Now please do work on a solution to enable PSN+ users to change our Playstation Network ID Display name.

Hi James thanks for the reply, thats great news, means when I fly home I can load up my GT5 savefile on my mates PS3!

A tip: Make it so that I can more easily synchronize my PS1 game saves between my PS3 and PSP.

somethingatt 09 March, 2011 @ 17:55

Awesome. You will see a Plus sign next to my avatar tomorrow (and for many years after that) thanks to this.

Best PS3 feature update in a LONG while!

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:04

Glad you like it, cheers

almighty-slayer 09 March, 2011 @ 17:57

JAMES have i told you how much i love you lately??

This is brilliant :D Plus just keeps getting better and BETTER. You can say hello to another £50 from me when my 12 months is up :D

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:04

haha, its something you can never hear enough! ;-)

Lol, why doesn’t Sony just confirm right away. We already know after all ;)

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:05

nothing we can do about that i’m afraid

So how does this work?

Games will save automatically to the cloud or to the HDD first and then be backed up to the cloud or both?

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:05

Please see the guide you can link to in the post, or there will be a Q&A on from tomorrow

somethingatt 09 March, 2011 @ 17:59

It better work with protected saves. C’mon it’s tied to our PSN account.
Pretty pointless if it doesn’t work with Protected Saves (as those are the main reasons you can’t upgrade HDD without having to backup the whole PS3).

James Thorpe 09 March, 2011 @ 18:06

you can, there is just a 24hr period b4 you can access the save

Meh..yeah thanks for this, a month after my original 60gb YLOD out of warranty. This should be a standard considering modern hardware isn’t as upto scratch as it could be.

Thanks, really good feature that i have been waiting for since the first rumors of PS+ was on kotaku,

(totally unrelated) anyone know where in europe you can get the Hero Edition of inFamous 2, seems like no one anywhere in Europe have seen any info, but yes this was very unrelated but if anyone reads it and got any information just reply with my name or something.

Also, thanks for listening to our feedback.

Btw for PS Store.

Using the triangle button to do ‘Add to cart.’ It is annoying have to do multiple screens when that makes more sense

I personally have no interest in it, but it would have been nicely ironic if cross-game chat had arrived with the firmware numbered 3.60 would it not?

@Paranoimia Well your not a ps+ member so I can you have no choice?
