The Weekend Debate: Going for Gold

If you’re a fan of sports then the irony is that the summer of 2012 will most likely be among your most inactive, with the European Football Championships soon followed by the 2012 Olympic Games in my home town of London, England all over your TV sets.

Earlier this week I read the first details of the inevitable official game of the 2012 Olympics, and I admit I always look forward to them. They take me back to the days of playing International Track and Field as a schoolboy and pioneering new ways to break world records (such as wearing a sock over your hand and using one finger to rapidly alternate between the X and Circle buttons in the sprint events. We called it the ‘getting biro off the back of your hand’ technique.)

I have no idea which events will be covered in the 2012 edition, nor which control schemes the development team is dreaming up. So, this week’s question is:

Which Olympic events would you include in your game of the 2012 Olympic Games and what would be the control mechanic?

Bonus points for the weird and wonderful, of course. The best 15 answers as selected by an independent judge will get a voucher code for PixelJunk Sidescroller. These will be sent via private message at http://community.eu.playstation.com.

Archery and fencing using Move controllers would be cool.

Archery with (inevitable) PS Move support seems to be an outside bet – it was done fairly well with Wii Sports Resort… A “real life” version would be a nice change of pace from waggling wands / mashing buttons to run quicker in 100m!

Beer Pong with playstation move XD

Not a sport event, but to celebrate your gold medal you have to use a SingStar mic to sing along with the national anthem :D

And as Suzzopher has already said Archery as I was typing, I’d also take Rowing or a Rifle Event too with the move.

Would definitely include judo, my martial art of choice, with control mainly focused on the right analogue stick.

You would twist the stick in certain ways to do the different moves, while L2 and R2 would be used to take your grips on the opponent, one button for each hand.

For ground moves, the face buttons would be use to modify the different types of ground work, like arm locks, chokes and normal ground moves.

the javelin where you have a small elasticated cord attached to your move controller so you have to give it a throw to determin the angle and power of your throw lol.

also could be applicable to shot pot and disc throw.

or

that gymnastics event with the ribbon you could use the move controler to paint out the movements of the ribbon :D

why not every event going, I remember getting the Vancouver winter Olympics game and was saddened it didn’t include everything like the curling etc. So yes, make it the best damn game ever by adding everything!

It would have to be the pole vault. The player would need to join a few Playstation Move controllers together using the a new attachment. Actually quite a lot of Move controllers but I’m sure it would be worth it. As the player chargers down his/her living room, the Playstation Eye would be able to judge the speed, the angle the ‘Move Pole’ (I’ve trademarked the name) is planted in the carpet and judge if the technique is right for clearing the bar.

Naturally it is best suited to those with long living rooms and very high ceilings. And of course it would be best if the player drags down a mattress to land on. Other than that it seems perfectly feasible :)

10

Fencing with the PS move is an obvious choice it would work well.
On the funny side how about high jump where you strap the PS move to your waist and try and jump over the coffee table…… :-s

I think in honour of Kevin Butler, I would include the esteemed sport of pushing a hoop with a stick! And of course I would bring the granny-friendly sport into the the 21st century with full Move functionality

You said bonus points for the weird and wonderful, so I’ll go for something weird that would never happen in the real olympics, for obvious reasons. Chocobo Racing meets Modnation Racers. It would have the controls of a normal racer, only you’d be controlling a Chocobo. (obviously!) But they would have the power up abilities from Modnation. Throw in the ability to customise and mod your Chocobo and you’d have a winner!
That’s about the only way you’ll ever get me to watch the olympics.

Synchronised Swimming – Can only be played co-op using the analog sticks.
All players have to push the same direction at the same time as they appear on screen for maximum points. And a free form mode where the directions don’t appear on screen but you still have to make sure everyone does the same thing.

Plate spinning or pizza dough spinning .. Ps move .. Simple

Sprinting event similar to QWOP where the X, circle, square and triangle buttons move a different part of the legs.

I would like a Football event as it is a sport that is really very deeply embedded into English culture with the fans here being very passionate and proud about both their individual football club and the country team.

I think the control scheme should be like the FIFA games if it was to be implemented as a mode as that game has proven to be really popular as well as really fluid in gameplay and i think a lot of this is down to the control so it would be a good one to replicate.

Tennis would also be a good sport to include in the game as that’s also really popular in England and is one of the main sports i think.

The control scheme for tennis could possibly be with PS move motion controls for rackets because of the accuracy and an authentic feel of it :D

I will include Fencing, not much sport games have this in their lists, my proposal is a first person view game with a slow motion for parries, repostas and feints all with the PS move.

I’d re-do the original 100 meter sprint… Instead of bashing X and O to run, you use the playstation move controllers and put one in your hand and one in your pocket (ala wii fitness).. The faster and more accurate your technique (raising from the start, to get set, to running on the spot, moving your legs and arms in the correct motion) the faster your selected runner would go.. The 1-1 tracking of the motion controller and the web cam i think it would be pretty accurate and as it doesnt just rely on speed but technique it would mean that your whole family could join in on the fun, single player or multiplayer madness

Olympic Committee bribe taking, use the Playstation Move to grab as many backhanders as possible… the winner has a bonus round where they try to boost their money by giving complimentary tickets to the company which will make them a non-Executive board member. They could then release a Fifa World Cup version of the game for 2014.

20

Synchronised swimming in gravy. Co op using move controllers like MB in a certain dance game on youtube… Judo in drag ps eye mapped characters like reality fighters ..

I think Team17’s Waggle-O-Mania should be an Olympic Event & the controls would be a retro waggle your joystick from left to right as fast as you can (Special bonus scores if you could do it between your toes!).

Back in the day of Daley Thompson’s Decathlon there was a technique where you held the joystick by the base so it was upside down and shook it frenziedly !

Seeing Going For Gold made me remember this http://youtu.be/n0pvFulUd98

i would put javlin throw and hammer throw and the controls would be you use the playstation move to throw it or use the controller to throw it (i dnt mean throw the controller -_-) i mean you the x button to run and o to throw (does that clear things up? :D)

Can’t believe I’m writing this down, but it instantly popped in.

Beach Volley Ball TV Director 2012 HD
Game mechanics would use a new PS Eye HD Cam,and use eye tracking and voice control.Use eye tracking to control what you want the camera to focus on,and use voice to call replays, cut orders, camera location.slow-mo zoom shots :/
You would geta bonus based on TV figures, and mixing good camera shots with good volley ball shots.

Sorry :)

You can’t say Olympic Games without thinking back to the old MSX/64/Speccie/ST/Amiga games, but what about a real time Olympic Torch Relay with the PS Vita using the Near functionality, trying to bring the torch from Greece to London ?
Basically, you try to locate a potential torch carrier, and have to meet to pass over the flame. (You could use the camera to capture a changing pattern on the other screen to make sure the systems are actually together.) Meanwhile when you’re ‘carrying the flame’ you can post images on a public image feed. *flame has to be passed over within a limited time before ‘dying’ and being relit with the previous ‘runner’.

Marathon with similar controls as in QWOP. Should be a challenge.

I actually don’t think the control mechanics and events will be that
important to the playability of the game…

…I would focus on making the game easily accessable for more casual gamers, and I would add offline multiplayer, online multiplayer and leaderboards, so that the Olympics will feel like a real competition whether you’re alone, or with a bunch of friends.

But probably the most important thing, would be the ability to go from the main title screen to a game in about 10 seconds, (if you know what you’re doing). I would also make a “Quick Tournament” button at the main menu, where the game puts you into a tournament of 5 random events, and if there’s more than 1 controller on, it would automatically make that number of players. (And I could go on and on…)

Overall, an easy to pick up, fast to get into, competitive game.

If I wanted to win I’d make Procrastinating an Olympic event and put that in my Olympics 2012 game. You’d be set a task to complete and points would be allocated to those who waste the most time doing banal things, like looking up how many episodes of the Crystal Maze there were, what the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit are, what happened to Macaulay Culkin, pictures of cats doing people things, pictures of people doing cat things… deleting your internet history, looking up what Internet Cookies are, looking up Cookie recipes, going to the store to buy Cookies… eating aforementioned Cookies, searching for Cookie Monster videos, watching Sesame Street videos, updating your Facebook profile to mention that you’re watching Sesame Street… reminiscing about the good old days, remembering what life was like before the Internet, wondering what you’d be doing if the Internet didn’t exist, remembering that you’re supposed to be doing something…

…Sorry, what was the topic again?

Dragon Slaying, it’d play like an action7platformer games. Trying to defeat a dragon before he kills you.

Games about multi sports events like the Olympics often forget or ignore all of the business around the events. Wouldn’t it be a thrill to actually participate in the flag relay? To be one of the athletes in the opening ceremony?

Of course, since it’s a video game, there are ways you could expand upon the event roster. For example:

– skydiving into the stadium (avoid festive balloons and land as near as possible to the center; the longer you freefall, the more points you get)

– PS Move is obviously designed for first person fencing (doh), but other contact sports would work too. Imagine karate where attacking and deflecting isn’t controlled by a timed press of the button, but by aiming your attacks and defenses yourself. Basically every sport gets intenser in first person, but controllers usually were not good enough for the instinctive movements you’d have to make in first person. PS Move is. Imagine FP BMXing, Football or Hockey, and you know what I mean.

How about we bring back the ‘Art competitions’ to Olympics. You could use your Rock band equipment in the Music category and Move in Painting. And nothing would be more thrilling than taking part in the Literature competion and be judged by your PS3.

Many of the real sports would make for a great use of Move, Tennis, Fencing, etc.. Though I’m personally waiting for the Winter olympics for the eventual Move enabled Curling event.

The Olympic game should be tennis, and shouldn’t be the obvious answer where use a Move controller.

It should be a game for the Vita.
You use the rear touch panel to control not only the angle but also strength depending on how fast you move your finger on the touch panel.
You move using the left analog stick.
The game has an option for augmented reality so you can make any place into an Olympic stadium.

Climbing! It’s not an Olympic sport yet, but come 2020 it could be (now that it’s been recognised by the Olympic Committee and can compete with other sports for entry to the Olympic Games).

For controls there’s already been some great examples with Assassin’s Creed/inFamous/Uncharted that all feature climbing in some way, but I think to show the strength and to a certain degree the puzzle-solving of figuring out your route up a wall following the QWOP sequel; GIRP, is a good way, with each hold marked as a different button on the controller, a bit like a vertical Twister eg: left hand-L2, right hand-O and then if you wanted to jump up/dyno to a higher hold then you could shake the controller, letting go of the other buttons and pressing the ones for the new holds when you leap to them.

When playing tennis in my Olympic game you will be able to groan/scream like Sharapova and Azarenka.

The microphone in the PS Eye will be used to register your groans/screams and if you do it loud enough and with perfect timing with your shots you will get a devastating power shot! (Your neighbours will probably hate you for the noise and they will probably not believe you are just playing a game… :))

I think far too many people are taking this far too seriously, the idea is for WEIRD and WONDERFUL, not a discussion about some banal real sport. I reckon @Solid_Snake1987 should get ALL the voucher codes.

Olympic torch event with move controller! You Run and walk with it pass the toch to next one and finaly shoot the fire arrow to light olympic flame or something as cool

Would have to be javelin, using the right stick to ‘fling’ the javelins. Only its not javelins, its your grandma/the hasselhoff/jeremy clarkson/assorted gaming character. Bonus points for getting the entire head in the ground. And its not a field, its a burning pit of coals, and overhanging it are orcs that are trying to stop your character. Think pain, but more.

37

Whatever events the game has you have to start by taking a urine test, This won’t be any normal urine test, you have to use a specially created controller to aim and hit all the targets within a certain time limit.

Message flagged Friday, 20 January 2012, 16:16 I would have the Tube Dash where you have to get from one side of London to the other in the fastest time possible, using an overcrowded London Underground system. You’d have to navigate everyday obstacles such as buskers, closed sections of line/stations, rail replacement bus services, and of course American werewolves.

Bonus points would be awarded for running up escalators the wrong way and leaving graffiti in unusual places.

The control system would be similar to Mirror’s Edge.

Is fencing in the olympics? I ‘m not sure but if it is I would like a game like that. You would use the move wand thing as the sword and the navigator to much around and dodge. I haven’t actually done fencing in real life due to the fact I would probaly be no good at it but in a game it would be fun. As long as the move is displayed on screen as the sword exactly like not just if you wave down the sword does a particular move but does the same thing.

Robot Wars style, robots from around the world kicking the **** out of each other. Last one in, wins.

41

Video games should be an Olympic sport. Then you could use the normal DualShock controller to represent a videogame controller. The resemblance is uncanny.

Just remake Daley Thompson’s Decathlon in HD with online multiplayer on PSN. Controls? Lots of manic button bashing. It may be an old control method but its still probably the best for this type of game. Losing all the fancy button combos makes it a great party game that anyone can join in without being overawed. The appeal of party games is simple controls that even a complete noob can pick up and be in with a chance.

I’ve thought for many years that a well made Canoe-Kayak Slalom game would be an awesome event for the game. Opportunity for move support would be obvious, with two controllers acting as the paddle.

However, for a regular controller, the R1 and L1 buttons would be used for regular strokes on respective sides (with L1 being a stroke on the left, turning the boat towards the right). R2 and L2 would be provide what is known as a bow-rudder, whereby the boat is turned quickly around the upright paddle.

Then stern rudders could be performed by using the analogue sticks to “fine steer” the boat during faster current. On top of that, a mechanic for rolling back up in case you capsize would also be easy to implement using sixaxis.

Oh, and if you want it to be more realistic, get a friend/sibling to throw icy water at you while you’re playing.

Ok, weird and wonderful eh? Elvis vs The world: After being captured by aliens for many years, Elvis manages to escape their evil clutches, in a bacon and peanut butter filled sandwich fuelled frenzy. Unfortunately, as he has eaten so many said sandwiches, he is now about I don’t know 150 foot tall or something, and fat. Real FAT. Upon his return to Earth he realises that people falsely idolise him, and wreaks havoc upon humanity.

There are many plot holes to fill in, but I’m sure we could fit some things in (mini game compendiums seem to be all the rage), such as sandwich eating, with SixAxis / Move support, guitar playing a la guitar hero, by pressing buttons, and using the sing star mic to create edgy new material (co produced by Dr Dre and H from Steps).

In multiplayer mode, you can also play as other well known musical icons, such as Shakin’ Stevens, The Woolpackers, and Daniel Beddingfield, in the all important race for the gold medals :-\

I would definitely want to go back to the core roots of gaming, which was the essence of the legendary “Summer Games” back in the 80′ … The variety of games ranging from sprinting, over weight lifting to pole diving and skeet shooting.
The control mechanisms will of course include the PS Move controllers but could also utilise the SixAxiS motion controls (and of course analog sticks) for those without Move controllers.
The essence of both the game and the Olympics is to participate and have fun both with friends and on your own, trimming that sprint, jump or shot, beating that high score. Leaderboards, both world wide, regional (country) and among friends is a must! Let’s all be Olympic athletes!
