Welcome to AR Play on PS Vita!

AR Play

Hi Everyone.

When PS Vita launched in February, bundled free with every console was a set of three exciting games that each used the cool new features of PS Vita to introduce a new type of augmented reality gaming. These games and the plans for further innovative AR experiences in the same vein over the next few months introduce a brand new category of gaming for PS Vita that is to be known as AR Play.

During the course of this year there will be many more of these clever augmented reality experiences to be enjoyed. We recently saw the release of Table Top Tanks and I am pleased to confirm that incoming we have a brand new title known as PulzAR plus brand spanking new DLC for one of the aforementioned free to own release titles – Table Football.

pulzar 1

First up let’s take a look at PulzAR…what is it?

Well the storyline is that Earth is in grave danger, somewhere just beyond our planet’s outer atmosphere 5 giant asteroids are heading on a deadly collision course with the planet. It’s up to you, the player, to command a network of laser powered rockets to try and blast the asteroids into a harmless meteor shower before they hit the Earth.

The first AR Play Card placed is used as the Arena card and draws the level out, then the puzzles use up to 5 AR Play Cards to place the 3 types of objects in the game; Reflectors, Splitters and Colour Filters.

There have been other laser and light based games before, but none of them have let you see the game world and play it on your table top, something that can only be done with PS Vita. The original iteration of the puzzles just used Reflectors with the Splitters and Colour Filters part of the Arena; we expanded that to allow the other objects to be placed by the player too.

Moving the PS Vita around the play area will let you visualise the world in true 3D, you may see a solution you previously hadn’t thought of. Tilt the PS Vita up to the sky to view the asteroids bearing down on you. We hope you enjoy PulzAR and manage to solve all of the puzzles. If you need to get the AR Play Cards or want create a huge arena to play in (by scaling up the cards) then you can download them from here.

PulzAR is released today for £1.59/€1.99 complete with trophies!

Next up and likely to help feed the football fantasies of everyone currently glued to the European Championships is the brand new DLC for Table Football, the Match Day Game Pack.

Following the launch of the initial free to own title in February we’ve been listening to our players to find out what they wanted to see in future versions of this game, and in response to the feedback we are happy to announce new content in the shape of the Match Day Game Pack – a downloadable pack for Table Football featuring a host of extra content.

TableFootball_WeatherSnow2

You want to play in the rain or snow? You got it. You can turn your AR football pitch into a mudbath as the rain falls or cover it in ice in a snowstorm. Watch out for that wind now, you’ll have to adjust for it when you’re passing long and shooting – although it might help you pull off some crazy shots at goal. Mud and snow can affect the game in many ways so you’ll have to adapt your play style to the weather conditions.

TableFootball_WeatherRain3

The existing tournament mode has now been expanded to allow you and three friends to compete with each other and versus the AI in the definitive battle to discover the champions. Using one PS Vita and a set of AR Play Cards you can compete in your own mini world tournament against the best of the best. We have also added 20 new teams to the roster, including five special continental “All-Star” teams to give even more choice to all game modes. Combine all that with new stadia that are more detailed than ever, with new scoreboards and extra match balls to make up a huge batch of new content for Table Football.

We have also added extra game options allowing you to configure the matches to suit your taste by altering the number of players per team, moves per turn and length of the match. Table Football and the Match Day Game Pack is perfect for that five minute quick match or a long tournament session.

We feel the Match Day Game Pack offers an exciting new element to Table Football and will add even more playability to the game. The Pack is out today at price of £0.79/€0.99.

So there you have it, two great titles from the new AR Play range – I hope that you enjoy them and be sure to check out the spectacular PulzAR video below:

There’ll be more to come from this new range so keep checking back here on PlayStation Blog for more news.

I just wish that the camera was good enough for these games. When I tried the Table Football game, the distance between having the required cards visible and the range of the AR cards (when the Vita stopped “seeing” it) was tiny – meaning that it was impossible to play.

Not to mention that I also have to get an extra light out to shine on the cards – it seems that the camera in the Vita (and the 3DS) aren’t good at all if you have energy saving light bulbs, as they both often fail to see the AR cards.

This AR stuff is a good idea – but the technology just isn’t ready.

Hi Cube,

There is always a distance limitation when using cards. This can be improved by playing in optimal lighting conditions and should be fine up to a metre away.

Also overlapping cards or putting your hand in front of the cards blocking the camera view can stop the vita recognising the cards.

I hope you give other AR games a chance to show you what they can offer from normal games.

Cheers

Handy tip for Vita charging cradle owners: the thing doubles as a pretty good stand for playing PulzAR. Just have to elevate it a little.

It looks challenging and fun :)
However, the biggest problem I have with most AR titles is that I tend to play in the evening, and it seems that this requires a lot more light then I have around. Has this improved over the first batch of AR titles?

Hi Sentry.

We are improving our tech with all of our games, but inherently AR technology needs some light to work due to using the camera.

mmm these small games have the price entery that i just love.
and when there are trophys, im in!

get trophys into the football game yeah?

Where are the real vita games hate Ar I’ve throw my cards away when I 1st got the machine.

PulzAR looks vaguely interesting, although I suspect most people will want a demo to see what it’s like, even for the low price. Will there be a demo?

Table Football is worthless and I doubt there’s more than a tiny fraction of Vita owners who played it more than once (for about 10 minutes at most). This DLC for it may be the lowest-selling item in PlayStation Store history.

That actually looks amazing!

brilliant. my son loves the AR games, will be getting the dlc and new game later!

I on’t see myself buying any more of the AR games that use the cards. Hopefully we’ll see some of the mooted SmartAR games working on Vita.

Hi Bonyman,

Vitas versatility means we can do more types of AR games than before, expect to see games using different types of AR tech. PulzAR’s advantage is that you have to use the cards to place your objects so YOU solve the puzzles YOUR way. This is an advantage card technology has over other AR solutions

@phantom2k88

Any points you may make are rendered useless by your ridiculous over-use of capital letters.

If you want to state something, state it. YOU DON’T HAVE TO SHOUT ABOUT IT. You’ll only end up looking like an idiot.

augmented reality is trully AMAZING on the vita. i got table top tanks yestaday, and its good but i dont see why you need the AR cards when you dont in reality fighters.

Hi Davie.

RF uses both cards and the gyros inside vita to provide a markerless experience.
This suits Reality Fighters as it contains 2d style gameplay, and utilising the gyros alone means you cannot zoom into and around the gameplay like you can by using the markers. So essentially RF is best used at a distance for cool life sized fighters, and the cards when at a closer distance like sat at a table

Hey Sony.

I had no AR cards inside my Vita box :(
I didn’t realise at the time that there should have been some in there and now its too late to go back to the store about it.

Is there a way I can get some more from anywhere because I really like the look of the AR games and want to play them. Are there any spare sets someone could send me? There MUST be some lying around the offices… and while you are at it can you send a memo to all sony style store employees to leave the AR cards in the box :(

I know you can print them but I really like the idea of the official ones printed onto proper cards.

Thanks

Hi DirtyCAT,

Sorry to hear that. Try contacting customer services or you can download and print the cards off here

One tip – The bigger the cards the bigger the action, so those table top tanks can be bigger than your cat (dirty or clean!)

Cheers

Thanks John.
Ill experiment with different sizes!

I love this AR technology. Its really nicely executed on the Vita and I’m super excited to see what other fun things will come out for it.
