Jak And Cole MacGrath Join The PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Roster

We’re just back from a great showing at San Diego at Comic-Con! The convention seems to get bigger and bigger every year (not sure how that’s possible), and this year was definitely no exception. Comic-Con was especially exciting for the SuperBot team since it was the perfect opportunity to reveal the newest additions to the roster for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale!

Yesterday at the show, the SuperBot team led a lively discussion panel that gave attendees a sneak peek at the development of PlayStation All-Stars. Alongside our very own Chan Park and Omar Kendall, IGN.com’s Greg Miller joined us as a moderator to explore how the team created our super roster of PlayStation characters and environments for the ultimate cross-over brawler. In addition, they discussed alternate costume decisions, some of the different game modes available, and the concept of the “mash-up”. But of course, the highlight of the panel was unveiling two new, highly anticipated additions to the roster. We are pleased to announce the inclusion of Jak and Daxter and Cole MacGrath in PlayStation All-Stars!

Initially debuting on PlayStation 2 way back in 2001, Naughty Dog’s Jak and Daxter series has seen critical acclaim and success, spawning multiple titles on PS2, PS3, and PSP. Fans have enjoyed Jak and Daxter’s signature style and varied gameplay, so we considered them prime candidates for our game. Jak and Daxter are beastly on the battlefield; they’ve definitely been my go-to pair lately here at the studio!

Players familiar with Jak and Daxter’s arsenal will immediately recognise some of the weaponry utilised in PlayStation All-Stars including the Blaster, Needle Lazer, Gyro Burster, and Mass Inverter. When the going gets tough, Jak has the ability to unleash the powers of both Dark and Light Jak to even the playing field, as seen in Jak II and Jak 3 respectively. Daxter even lends a hand in Jak’s melee attacks!

Representing the PlayStation franchise inFAMOUS from Sucker Punch Studios, Cole MacGrath proves to be an unlikely hero with extraordinary powers, so it made perfect sense to us for him to be in the ring alongside some of PlayStation’s heaviest hitters.

Cole takes advantage of a wide array of abilities in inFAMOUS, an experience we hoped to emulate when incorporating him into the game. He is a well-rounded fighter who is effective at both close and long range, and is highly mobile as well. Players can command both his electrokinesis and cryokinesis, using these powers to assault opponents from a safe distance or propel himself towards the action. With these abilities, Cole proves to be a formidable adversary for the rest of the PlayStation All-Stars cast!

That’s it for our reveals at Comic-Con! We’re always excited to share new information about the game, so we hope you’ve enjoyed the reveals so far. We still have lots more to unveil before our October 2012 launch date so you’ll be hearing from us again soon. Until next time!

As much as I initially hated this idea cos I loathe Smash Bros I can’t help but feel more drawn to it even just on the basis that PlayStation simply has the best and most varied range of exclusive characters on any system and I’m starting to warm to the idea of watching them beat the snot out of each other.

1.1

Glad you’ve come around Carnivius. This title is THE most played game in PlayStation offices, it’s great to see all of these PlayStation characters, over 3 platform generations as you say, beat the snot out of each other.

Nice to see Jak & Daxter being confirmed. I have a feeling Sackboy and Ratchet & Clank are next to be confirmed since R&C have so many games thus far. Ratchet & Clank has got to be next to be confirmed for sure.

And for the stage, we had a stage mashup with Parappa the Rapper and KillZone and also LBP with Buzz! I’d love to see a stage with a fusion of Wipeout and Gran Turismo (inspired from the WipEout 2048 intro).

2.1

More characters and levels to come supersmith, keep an eye on the blog. Glad you liked the stage mash-ups, it’s not something we’ve focused on communicating, as the character announcements are what people really want, but for me one of the most amazing things about this title is the detail and easter eggs that go into the various backgrounds.

LBP and Buzz! mashup is one of my favourites.

Looking forward to this!
Needs more female characters though; Fat Princess is awesome, but she’s the only one announced so far? I’d go crazy if Kat from Gravity Rush ends up being in the game :) Nariko may be a good choice too…

Hi darylsdn,

Keep an eye on the blog for more character announcements, we’re not done yet.

4

I think all play station heroes should be playable In play station all stars it would be awesome

4.1

Hi manutreble,

The PlayStation universe is so vast, the biggest challenge for the SuperBot guys was narrowing it down to the characters that can fit in the game.

Keep an eye on the blog for more announcements, lots of surprises still to come.

Great to see even more awesome characters joining the All-Stars roster. I do agree with darylsdn though. The roster could use some more ladies and Kat from Gravity Rush would be a perfect addition.

5.1

I agree with both of you.

Keep an eye on the blog for further character announcements, we’ve got a way to go yet.

If Kat (from Gravity Rush) is in the game, thats a sale Sony. You know sales are good! After Kat I do wan’t to see Ratchet and Clank Join the roster, but without that blonde chick, the sales not happening ;) :P

6.1

Hi Zero,

We already have a blonde in Fat Princess, but keep an eye on the blog for further character announcements, there’s quite a few to go.

Definitely could do with more female characters but then how many games are there than couldn’t? Smash has a huge roster and only a handful of female characters. Females are poorly represented is video games so it is to be expected that a game of this nature would feature very few females. We don’t need more female characters in All-Stars, we need more female characters in video games.

Regardless, these are good additions. Ratchet & Clank are obviously going to be in the game, Sackboy is highly likely too. You know who I really want in this game? Sir Daniel Fortesque. MediEvil was developed by Sony, published by Sony, and is still owned by Sony, so why not? There is no way I am the only one who would love to see this, MediEvil is a classic!

7.1

That was nicely put thymeparadox, it’s true that females are underrepresented in videogames in general, certainly as protagonists anyway.

As I said above in response to @manutreble, the PlayStation universe is HUGE, spanning 18 years and three generations of consoles. The challenge for SuperBot was trying to figure out which characters would fit best in a 4 player brawler.

Thanks for a great comment.

Please oh PLEASE, include Sora from Kingdom Hearts!

If not then Sonic or Ryu.

Hi Falcon,

Keep an eye on the blog for further announcements, we’ve got some surprises up our sleeves.

I agree with everyone else on this matter, Kat from Gravity Rush would be PERFECT for PlayStation All-Stars.

And I’m positive Ratchet & Clank will be in the game as well, and Sackboy, Rayman, Spyro, and Crash Bandicoot will hopefully be in the game too.

9.1

Hi fjernbetjening (phew, hope I got that right)

My personal wishlist for characters is now in it’s fourth A4 page, we still have announcements to make, so keep an eye on the blog.

@9 (Myself)

And Sora from Kingdom Hearts

Do the powers that be read these comments..? If so, Kat from Gravity Rush seems like a no-brainer; Awesome melee combat, and things like Gravity Kick would suit it perfectly. Plus the special attacks like Gravity Typhoon would be awesome! Make it happen!

11.1

I don’t know who these “powers that be” are of which you speak, but I can assure you that Dan and the guys at SuperBot regularly check our (and the US) blog for your guys’ valuable commentary.

As they are 8 hours behind European time and also working hard on the game, it’s tough for them to come in and comment themselves.

Maybe closer to launch I can get them on here for a Q&A?

Hopefully SNAKE(MGS) & maybe Crash Bandicoot will be in it to :P I can’t wait to play this game;)

12.1

You’ll have to wait and see Carl-G,

Keep an eye on the blog.

13

Another vote for Kat from Gravity Rush. It makes perfect sense!

(Also, she’s the best new character of 2012)

13.1

I’m sure @Rebecca Maschke who managed Gravity Rush here in Europe and the guys at Japan Studio who developed the game would be honoured to hear that.

I can’t promise anything on any characters at the moment, all I can say is keep an eye on the blog for upcoming reveals.

14

Yeahh request for Kat , Nariko and Crash Bandicot….mmm Patapons :P

14.1

Hola JFSAINTS

Well I CAN confirm that the Patapons are in the game in the guise of a mash up background with Hades from God of War. If you look at Cole’s trailer above, around the 0:30 mark you’ll see the Patapon in the background.

To see if the rest of your predictions ring true, you’ll have to keep an eye on the blog

15

Add Kat now!

fjernbetjening 16 July, 2012 @ 20:52
16

@10 (Still myself) Also, how about adding Norman Jayden from Heavy Rain, with some cool special moves using his ARI gear.

There are so many great PlayStation exclusive characters to choose from.

17

Loving the disparate characters, realistic and cartoony alike in one game! Can’t wait to see Ratchet. And obviously Ratchet’s in the game, let’s not fool ourselves here.

All those griping about a lack of female characters, remember that Battle Royal seems to be reaching to third parties more and more… something that opens the gates to many more female fighters.

And talking of which, wasn’t the PlayStation the console well known for bringing fame and fortune to a certain Lara Croft? She’d be an excellent addition!

Lara Croft versus Nathan Drake… battle of the fortune hunters, finally ready to face each other down… come on SuperBot, make it happen!

I would like to see lara Croft as a female character as well as other characters that have already been said such as crash, rachet and snake.

when i heard about ps allstars. the only characters i want on it were jak and daxter and ratchet and clank. and its happening. now just ratchet and clank need to be announced

21

i bet the next ones to be announced will be ratchet and clank and crash bandicoot

22

happy to see them to the list.
I would love to also see some female character like Kat from Gravity Rush

23

I would love to list some characters and type of stages I would love to see. But I don’t think its worth it =/

24

At the rate you are revealing characters I can only guess the roster is going to be too small.

Standard fighters (the good and popular ones, not the D-listers) usually have 30-40 characters in them, some games even more. For a crossover game such as this you really need be reaching the upper end of that scale.

You really need some more female characters also, and no fatties, don’t want to play those.

Lara Croft, Elena Fisher, Sophitia Alexanda, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, iconic characters from series that were made popular on Playstation systems.

Norman Jayden from Heavy Rain would be great also.

If you added

Cloud Strife or Zack Fair to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale!

Then i would get it but PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale isn`t
worth getting as follows my favourite game that you all forgot here

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale can not beat original Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring

Sony needs to grow some balls and poke more fun at itself, the way SEGAGAGA did. Use characters like Kevin Butler, Marcus, David Linch commercials. Also more classic characters from IP usually associated with PlayStation like Reiko Nagase, Crash, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Guitaroo Man, etc. Use old geometry and resolution graphics if you have to! This is what long time fans really want to see in the game.

27

I want to see Rikimaru from Tenchu in this.Come on the best Tenchu games were in PS1 & PS2…………..Sony do something, give me a motive to buy this game xD

Rikimaru <3

Thumbs up for heihachi and kratos [DELETED] YEA

29

Nariko from heavenly sword, ryu/ken and kat (gravity rush) those three would be great especially nariko and kat!!

30

Becoming Kevin Butler should be a powerfull power up.

Is there going to be a demo of this game before it’s release?

Sir_Gunnalot 17 July, 2012 @ 15:51

While I already think this is shaping up to be a very fun game, with an even more fun roster of characters, I feel it’s too modern. A lot of the characters are from (or have prominently featured in) the PlayStation 3 generation. Like you and others have said, the PlayStation has spanned 18 years and 3 console generations, redefining gaming in each of those generations, which gives a massive choice of characters.

While some characters wouldn’t be suitable for a game like this (Norman Jayden, Lukas Kane from Fahrenheit, for example), others would. Tomb Raider, Tenchu, Crash Bandicoot (as has been mentioned above), Ape Escape, Hogs of War and so much more!

Or on the PS2, where you can find Timesplitters, Prince of Persia, some of the best Final Fantasy games, Metal Gear Solid, and probably the best of the lot – Vice City. I’d kill (see what I did there?) to fight as Tommy Vercetti!

33

How can we get the pre-order costumes in Europe? So far ive only seen them in US

uncleniccius 17 July, 2012 @ 17:28
34

I would love a Q&A! Am I right to assume the next set of characters will be announced at Gamescon? I vote Kat, Rayman, Sonic, Snake, R&C, FF characters and a Wipeout map. I can’t wait! :)
PS: Put Mario in there for the humour (if Ninty would agree).

35

This game is turning out to be quite a gem. Heihachi and Toro were still my favourite announcements. I really hope a certain amnesiac girl and her gravity manipulating cat will gravity slide their way into this game. It’s in great need of more female characters.

C’MON SUPERBOT! I wanna “Gravity Kick” Kratos in the face! :P

I like what I am seeing so far, the only thing that would make this game perfect, is if Selvaria or Alicia from Valkyria Chronicles was in it. Hope to see kevin butler in there too. Heh

best thing about this is unlike SSBB thers probably gonna be dlc like extra chacters and stages

supersmith2500 23 July, 2012 @ 21:52

Oh one more thing.
My stage mashup wishes are these:

Ratchet & Clank + LocoRoco
Gran Turismo + WipEout 2048

Make it happen!!

39

Dragonborn..
Ethan Mars.. special ability could be shouting “Jason!! Jason?.. JAAAASSSSOOONN!!??” ..useless but amusing
Ratchet & Clank
Ryu (Ninja Gaiden)
Shepard (Mass Effect) Omni-Blade melee, Biotics & Guns for distance & maybe a Reaper ability
Rick (Splatterhouse) he would just fit perfectly (minus the blood, guts & body parts flying..)
James Heller or Alex Mercer
Chimera from Resistance
