The Last of Us prequel comes to comics in The Last of Us: American Dreams

On 12th October, 2012 in New York City, at a panel during New York Comic Con, Dark Horse Comics and Naughty Dog announced The Last of Us: American Dreams. We are stoked to be working with Dark Horse and really excited to reveal the first details about the prequel to the public. Here is the first promotional image for the comic book series:

The Last of Us: American Dreams is a four issue comic book series that peels back the layers on the early days of Ellie as it dives into her backstory. It will expose her personality and the motivations that drive her as it explores the first steps of the journey that leads to becoming the character we ultimately meet in the game. Naughty Dog Creative Director and Co-Writer on the series, Neil Druckmann, had this to say about the comic books:

“I wanted to see a story that can stand on its own, so if you’ve never played the game you’d still be able to read this comic and get an intriguing story with these characters but, at the same time, if you do read this comic book and you play the game, you should get greater depth, a greater understanding of these characters and the world and what’s going on with them.

“The other cool thing is that working on the comic book has helped me develop more of Ellie’s backstory. Because we haven’t finished the game yet, we’ve been able to weave some of those threads into the story of the game. So there are certain parts as you play the game, if you’ve read the comic book, you’ll understand what Ellie’s referring to, or have a deeper understanding of what made her make that decision.”

The series will be made by collaboration between Naughty Dog Creative Director Neil Druckmann, artist and writer Faith Erin Hicks, and colorist Christina Strain. Neil and Faith will be co-writers on the project and Faith will be doing the drawing while Christina handles the coloring duties. Faith recently posted up early concept art she did for Ellie:

You can see more of Faith’s awesome concept sketches for The Last of Us: American Dreams version of Ellie along with her thoughts on what makes a good video game comic book over on her Tumblr page. Here’s another look at her amazing work:

In addition to the comic book series, Dark Horse Comics will be publishing the The Last of Us art book that explores the characters, the infected humans, and the highly detailed, rich world of the game. We will have more information about the art book over coming months.

The Last of Us art book will be released in conjunction with the launch of the game in 2013. The Last of Us: American Dreams comic book series will be coming out in spring 2013. We’ll have additional updates including cover reveals for the comic book issues as they are ready. If you want a complete look into the world of The Last of Us the art book is a must-have. If you want additional insight into Ellie’s character (and a good story to boot) don’t miss this comic series. We can’t wait to share more information with you as it becomes available!

Edit: looking forward. This blog could really use an edit button.

i love comics that are based on video games, infamous and mirrors edge ones where awesome

Dark horse is really a great place to check out if you like comixs, especially game tie-ins. While games and movies have an awkward past, game comics are really excellent.
Plus, with the psp comic store gone, this is one of the more reliable quality comic sources. Will definitely look forward to these Last of Us comics!

I love comics, the european once, not the superhero pulp from the US. I’m looking forward to the game but the art style of the comic shown in this article doens’t do it for me. The round head, the big eyes, it looks like a cross of anime and US pulp. It’s not a fit for the grity, realistic style Naughty Dog is going for. I’ve seen fan art that looked more convincing then this.

Fantastic! SCEE have just rolled the new store out in the European countries that have really massive Playstation communities… Russia, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia! What have they sold in those three countries combined… less that 500k PS3! Since when was Saudi Arabia part of Europe? No wonder Microsoft has cleaned the floor with them.

Is this not going to be looked upon as … (sorry) that word that sounds like pirates with a plague.. i mean reading all the article all i could think of was Walking Dead, so ok, this Game will be a ‘real’ game,, unlike the good, but on rails xp of WD, i am just not sure if i like the concept, plaugerism (?) aside, i mean IF people don’t or can’t read these comics, surely there Not going to Fully understand whatever history, backstory that ‘makes’ Ellie form her choices, is that fair ?.. can the Game itself not do this (easy ‘sounding’) job…. Am maybe drawing my conclusions due to the similar man, girl, father/child scenario that seems to be the focus of WD.. Am still counting down the days till i get hold of this.. But i am really unsure about this comic part.. perhaps it will escalate into a Assassins Creed type short film as well. Now funnily enough, that i would like to see. if it was reasonably priced.

Just to add (to post9).
i Do like the drawing, artwork, very good stuff, in fact IF this proposed comic was put onto film, i would like to see it done using those drawings.. allthough i hear it either is or was a time consuming project for a artist to undertake such a project.. either way i hope there are copies of those drawings/sketches included in all games boxes..or a LE vers, Not those CE ones, way too expensive, for my liking.

i dont really think this does rip off the walking dead to be honest.

for a start in the walking dead source material(the books) rick does start off only caring about him carl and lori but as things progress he becomes far more concerned about the group as a whole.

the other thing that differs this from walking dead is the isolation of it all and from what i have seen of the game it compares more with the film the road where it was just one man and his boy, its a very bleak movie but worth a watch.
also the fungi that is infecting people is based on a real living organisim which does exsist and infects ants in our reality.

on the walking dead hope you watched the first ep of series 3 as it was amazing and seems to be following the source quite closely so far and if that continues then this series is going to be on brutal fun ride :)

So glad my blackout is holding up.Not seen anything outside of E3.It’s why prefer the old magazine days,it was so easy keeping hype and avoiding stuff.
I always appreciated games more back then.It all seems a bit throw away now.

That sounds reasonable then, but what about the people who either can’t or won’t buy this comic, i mean are they not going to miss out on possible game experiences, as i would like to know why Ellie, or any character may choose a certain path over another, as i said i just think stuff like that really should be on the disc, or maybe even a Mas Effect 2 kinda back story, at start of game, whichever is easiest for the dev, i guess.
Walking Dead season3, i was gobsmacked, i thought it was the best one i have seen, and to think that was 1st ep, i can’t wait till fri to see next one, ps No spoilers beforehand, messin, i know you wouldn’t do that mate.

it was amazing :)

you know i would not spoil it for you its not my style.

just got done watching the second episode and it was every bit as good as the first and the preview at the end let me see enough to know the 3rd episodes also going to be a cracker.

the show has blossomed since ditching Frank Darabont and can no longer be referred to as the talking dead.

my wife had pretty much went off the show last season and now after these 2 episodes she is right back into it also as well as quizzing me on the comics and the book.

@ hayzink
Well i am glad that you say that, i haven’t a clue who the guy you refered to is, or what his role was but if his departure has resulted in the swing, from talking dead (lol) to what it now looks like becoming, then (sorry pal, but) good riddence.
Anyway i see you mentioned to Fred you have started RE4, i hope you get into it, i doubt i could put it more aptly than Fred did, ie, a desert island item, Though, unfortunately you may need to be on one, (desert island) to 100% it, not that it’s tedious at all, but tbh, i found the lack of a plat versus time needed kinda kept me puttin the pro playthrough off. also sorry for delayed reply. on phone etc..

Really good
