The Last of Us multiplayer revealed

Over the past few days we invited media to play our The Last of Us multiplayer mode called Factions. Most of these impressions are available online now but you’ll be seeing more as our review embargo on the game ends very soon.

The multiplayer is an extension of the themes you’ll find in the single player game. The moment-to-moment survival present in the single-player campaign is integral to the multiplayer. You’ll feel tension and need to be intensely alert at all times. We want to show you a glimpse of what the gameplay looks like.

In Factions you’ll have to pick a side and roll with the Hunters or the Fireflies. Each player starts with a small clan of survivors that you need to keep alive and grow. There are two modes in which you can accomplish the growth and survival of your Clan. In Supply Raid, you’ll have to scavenge the area and keep your team alive. Your team has a pool of 20 reinforcements. Once the reinforcements have been exhausted, the match will go into sudden death.

In Survivors, you’re going to have to be extremely vigilant. There are no respawns. Once you’re gone you’ve been eliminated until the next round. It’s a best of seven rounds in which the first team to win four rounds wins the match.

The core gameplay is very tactical, featuring the same crafting system found in the single player experience. Stealthy players can do well by using Listen Mode to locate enemies and flank them with silenced weapons. Teamwork is essential – fallen teammates can crawl to their allies and be revived, so players who stick together will excel. Melee combat is a brutal affair, and after downing a player you have the choice of performing an execution move. There are many more layers to explore, from the robust loadout system to the in-game economy. We can’t wait to see you online!

Pre-order The Last of Us to receive some cool multiplayer items via the Survival DLC Pack. Pairing with the initial game offerings if you buy the Season Pass you’ll be entitled to receive even more multiplayer content when we release newly created DLC we’re planning for the game.

The Last of Us is available globally from 14th June, 2013.

Not gonna watch. I’m saving the full experience for 14th June, that’s when I put this gem into my PS3. Thank you ND for this masterpiece. I love you guys.

watched it, freaking love it! if there would be more of a 2 player co-op mode in it me and a friend of mine would choose our game of the decade easy.
but this is certainly a step in the right direction

I was really hoping for some online co op wave based game mode, but this looks good

I’ll copy my comment from the US blog:

Review embargo… Uh-oh!
Lately review embargoes have only been used to muffle bad reviews in order to secure pre-orders/day one sales.
This made me wary.
I want the game, but as stated, the embargo makes me clutch my wallet tightly.

Looks nothing special tbh.
Still hyped for the main game though can’t wait for it.

There was a leak of real ingame multiplayer footage and people didnt like it. Now the trailer promises us gamers the world again and many fall for it still. Its sad. Game companys need to stop lying with trailers, this multiplayer probably will be fun for some and is a nice free add-on but really how hard can it be to walk the extramile and deliver an open world, ingame areas , some nice co-op, some AI-controlled zombies and a completely new experience? We still have nothing like dayZ on ps3. These small map bad COD rip-offs are getting repetive.

Think I’ll stick with single player. Same old, same old .

Oh and @Eric Monacelli

why does Naughty Dog ignore EUROPE? You replied to not one blog comment ? I am going to complain to sony management.

Game is 25% less in UK than in rest of Europe. Why? This cannot be allowed by law.

I watched this yesterday on Kotaku. Not really my kind of thing by the tbh. But hey you never know might just enjoy it after trying it out. Single player and online co-op are the only things I care about nowadays. This game would have made a great co-op game

11

@Maspalomas
You realise the pound is more valuable than the euro?

12

No we pay in europe 25% more than UK and USA for LAST OF US. Most games are about the same prize in UK and rest of europe. But sometimes as with THE LAST OF US Sony is taking 25% more from the rest of europe. It goes for the digital and the physical edition of the game. UK pays around 45€ and the rest pays 60€. This is not acceptable we want the low prize too especially when its the exact same file from the digital download.

hmmm these multi-player modes sound very familiar…just like the modes in Left 4 Dead 2

First vid I’ve seen since last E3, I k now about listen mode and that it an be turned off, but is that four your team only? If it’s global that would turn me off the mp a bit.

I do like the pace of the footage. I found the Uncharted mp (especially 3) sacrificed the fundamentals of the sp. It didn’t feel like a cover shooter. But this looks to have a slow and deliberate pace, and I like that.
Would be interesting to see if ND could turn their hand to a free to play SOCOM game.

Any word on the digital price? I’d like to put a pre order in before the weekend and get cash on the store ASAP.

15

@14
Its £39.99 to Pre-order on PSN. Much more sensible than the utterly ridiculous £59.99 that most publishers charge.

@#5 (Landslide85) Every single game has an embargo, it is the time & date at which the developers say that the press can release their reviews. The only games that don’t have an embargo are games that don’t even get sent to reviewers, because they are so bad.

The only time you should be worried is if the embargo is the date of release, for example.

I think this looks really interesting, the pacing will be a really nice change from the run and gun mentality of most MP experiences about at the moment.

18

Will The Last of Us be getting its own audio channel on the PULSE headphones? (through the app.) Bioshock did and it was excellent! Audio is amazing in TLOU so I really hope we get a calibrated preset. :) We also need this app on the EU store, US version works fine but not many PULSE owners even know such an app exists!

That looks horrible. Stay with SP.

Looks like the mp has the same silly set us has the sp with changing weapons with your bag and not the d-pad after playing the demo I’m waiting for the reviews I not so sure about this game anymore.

21

It looks AMAZING! Will this game feature split-screen in multiplayer like Uncharted 3?

22

looks awesome hope you make SP DLC rather than MP
will there be co-op ?

23

When you going too tell us EXACTLY what is in the season pass, so cannot lie like did with Uncharted 3.

Stonesthrow 05 June, 2013 @ 14:33
24

Not very interested in this multiplayer, I like my multiplayer experiences action packed and quick paced. Never liked the actual multiplayer in Uncharted either, I always play co op. Hope to see co op in this too.

25

Is their any LAN or offline option like uncharted 3?
split-screen?
anyway already pre-ordered :)

Kotaku has their review up for this game. I didn’t read it cos I’m afraid to run into spoilers but its there for someone that wants to read it. Seems a bit pointless to do that cos this is an unmissable game. Everyone should have it pre-ordered months ago :P lol

Just is wanted to say congratulations to everyone over at ND, the scores this game is receiving is nothing short of incredible.

Great way to end this generation!

@ Landslide85 #5

OPM – 10/10 plus a Gold Award (I got the mag through the post the other day, early)

Edge – Full marks

A few others have been leaked and ALL gave it FULL marks…

Embargos are the norm these days. When embargos are on release day. Then you get suspicious. ;-)

To people complaining about MP in this game.

Just ignore it and act like it doesn’t exist if that’ll help. It does not affect your enjoyment of Single player one little bit!

I’m going to play it as it actually looks good. More thought out attacks and strategical play rather than running round like headless chickens as in most MPs.

This could actually be a good MP. Don’t judge until you have played it!!

On the MP issue, does everybody remember how much of a surprise UC3 MP was. Nobody expected it to be as good as it turned out! In Naughty Dog I trust!
I cannot wait for this game, and the reviews back it up.

32

Anyone DOWNLOADING the game?

This is the latest blog post I found thru google. Here in europe where I am its midnight in 2 minutes. Wonder if we can download already.
