BreakQuest: Extra Evolution out now, exclusive to PS Vita

BreakQuest: Extra Evolution on PS Vita

Hi there! I’m pleased to reveal that our next game, BreakQuest: Extra Evolution, has just been released on PlayStation Store – exclusive to PS Vita!

Here’s a brief history lesson for you. The original game was released back in 2004 on PC by Spain-based Felix Casablancas and Nurium Games. It was the best breakout game at its time, as it featured something very unique for the genre: fully interactive physics. We were big fans of BreakQuest, and when Sony introduced us to PlayStation minis in 2010, we decided to bring BreakQuest to the mini platform last fall with BreakQuest: Extra Evolution, which was quite successful.

Now, we’ve decided to bring BreakQuest: Extra Evolution to PS Vita exclusively, with new features, a redesigned level selection system, updated graphics, PSN support, and more.

BreakQuest: Extra Evolution on PS VitaBreakQuest: Extra Evolution on PS Vita

One of the most valuable features of the original BreakQuest was 100 unique levels, each containing its own interactive physics design, layout, art, and sound theme. So we redesigned them all with better visuals, while still preserving the charm of the originals. Actually, we have 101 levels — there’s one secret one. Try to find it!

We also created 10 boss levels, each serving as a unique mini-game. Boss attacks can have adverse affects on your shuttle, like making it unresponsive, reversing the controls, or even killing the bumpers for a short period of time. Taking down these bosses will require some strategy on your part.

Each boss unlocks a new shuttle, which can be selected from the Shuttle Base menu. In the beginning of BreakQuest: Extra Evolution, you start playing with a basic shuttle, but by defeating bosses you can unlock up to 17 shuttles. The new shuttle comes with activated power-ups: guns, sticky bumpers, rockets, multi-ball, etc. — any of them can help you finish levels faster and get higher scores.

We also supports “near” gifts. Some shuttles are exclusive through near, and there are free ball packs hidden there, too!

BreakQuest: Extra Evolution on PS Vita

One of the new play elements added to BreakQuest: Extra Evolution is the Energy Shield, which can help you keep a ball in play. Once deployed, charging lines begin to cross the screen from left to right until they meet in the middle. Once fully charged, you can activate the shield with the L or R buttons. This shield can be especially helpful when you’re having a hard time keeping the ball in play.

Another new element, the Gravitor, can attract the ball to the shuttle’s bumper with a simple press and hold of Square or Circle.

And of course, there are PlayStation Trophies included in this version of BreakQuest as well, designed to reward players for outstanding performance during play.

With BreakQuest: Extra Evolution, we’re testing out the “Freemium” business model. We believe that is perfect for our game. Consider it an advanced demo of sorts, with scoreboards and Trophies working out of the box. By default, BreakQuest comes with 33 balls. When balls run out, you can purchase more ball packs with 100, 200, 500 balls. Also there’s an Infinite Ball unlock. There’s also a mechanism in game to create extra balls by catching ball parts

We hope you love the new evolution of BreakQuest. You can find more information on our site, or on Twitter.

I have a little feedback. I don’t play games based on the “freemium” model, at all. I don’t mind paying for games (Sony can attest to that, with the thousands I’ve spent over the years), but this business model makes a game worthless to me – it doesn’t even get installed.

only 1 game i play on freemium model = m blitz ( u are abel to play free en win )

games like Dust 514- ore Ecolibrium = joke

Freemium sucks, would buy full version of game if it was around $5.

P.S. Meanwhile, US gets great sale on japanese games.

And this sale alone beats sh#t out of our crappy summer “sale” – http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/08/12/ps-vita-game-sale-celebrates-japanese-developers/ .

Keep up good work of failing to deliver deals to EU customers, guys!

Got this game 100% already (101%, actually). For those complaining about the freemium model: the game has enough safeguards to finish it with the 33 free balls provided. You can even construct new balls from ingame drops!
If you really don’t want to play a freemium, just het the mini from last year. It’s basically the same game, without the trophies (and a few other niggles).

I truly enjoyed it. Some feedback: I had a few crashes mid-game, which is a drag, even though the game starts up pretty quickly. More worryingly, I had a few times where the ball itself simply disappeared, forcing me to play with no idea where the ball actually went. This is of course an absolute no-go. I hope you can fix that soon. I have a (Dutch) review of the game on the Sony OPC forum: http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PS-Vita-Games/Breakquest-Extra-Evolution-review/m-p/19526388

Thanks Chris, thats true – with enough skills you can complete game with 33 balls. Minis also don’t have scoreboards.
We have patch released yesterdsay that fixes issue.

I bought the infinite balls pack thinking I was buying the full game (infinite number of balls = no need to buy 100 or 200 ball packs) rather than just an infinite amount of balls that would mean I couldn’t lose a game but could basically cheat my way through each level. When I realised my error I deleted the game thinking if I re-installed without the infinite ball pack I just paid 6Euro for I could play the game with all the risk a limited amount of balls would offer, instead now I can’t re-install the game because it doesn’t give the option to download again after uninstalling. The freemium model is not something I will support again. You have my 6Euro, but it would of been much better to of sold the game out-right. I have the original PSP Mini version of the game already and really enjoy it but I like having the option of touch controls for the new game. Guess I’ll not get to check that out now.

You can download game from your download list at PSN store lower left icon.

If you want to buy the full version… It’s called “Infinite Balls Unlock”, and it’s 7 Euro.

Just consider the free(mium) version a demo. Though you can actually complete the whole game and earn all trophies with only the demo, from what I’ve heard.

²monoliet: Ecolibrium is a great game, if you care about the topic. You don’t need to spend any money on it.

The infinite balls unlock isn’t the full game mate. That’s what I thought but all it does is give you infinite amount of balls to take on each level, so you never lose a round by running out of balls, you just keep getting more and more balls ( infinite balls ) until you clear a level, taking all the risk out of the game. It’s not explained very well on PSN.

“By default, BreakQuest comes with 33 balls.”

I actually downloaded the game to try it out, and had 0 (zero) balls to play with, so I deleted the game ASAP.

Not interested in freemium, free2play or anything with in app purchases.
Sell the full game at a fair price and I’m down! The above practices need to stay away from our consoles!

I loved the original BreakQuest that was a mini – devious little brick breaking /Arkanoid game.

I however would have preferred it had you just charged for the game instead of charging for balls. I really don’t like this whole Zynga Farmville approach to gaming.

BreakQuest was a great little game – however this version seems to force people to keep it on the vita, especially those who have purchased the extra balls. Because of limited space on the memory card vita owners (I have a 16gb memory card) have to constantly remove games as most titles available on vita are download only. If someone purchases content (as the case with infinite balls) it should always be there in the download list

There is a infinite balls pack which is basicsally full game unlock, we made it exactly for that propose.

downloaded it played it collected all the trophies, very time consuming which is good

Downloaded It, It had 0 balls, deleted It.
Just in case you haven’t got It yet, It’s a big no thanks to freemuim guys!

I downloaded it, and it came with 0, ZERO balls. They didn’t even provide 1-3 balls to even try the game. Cheap dev i must say.

Zero Balls? Hello?

The only thing is “Menu” and you can’t start it the first time without paying to get more than 0 balls.

Yes, i deleted it right away as it was waste of space. They should provide a demo sometime.

guys goto the store you can add balls free for a short period of time

goodgood

Update: I redownloaded it, and “Live Area” says 33 balls, while ingame it says 0. When i quit, and restart the game, “Live Area” also says 0 balls.

I tried this with, and without the 1.01 patch. 0 Balls. I also checked the store, but there is no free balls.

Deleted again, and this time forever to never be installed again. ;)

Please contact SCEE support, they should able to help. Sorry about that.

I’m sticking with the minis version. You should have made a remaster of that instead of a freemium model like this.

Loved the minis version. Is this new one coming to the Australian PSN eventually? Cheers.

Alexey Menshikov 13 August, 2013 @ 07:51

Yes, 29th of August.

My version also came with 0 balls, so I purchased 100. Now I have a great new game for only €1,99. I don’t understand people who want everything for free. I would still like to get the promised 33 balls though.

Same here, 0 balls on my version. But in any case, the idea of losing your content entitlement forever just because you delete the save makes this model of freemium way too unstable for me to consider on the Vita. TOM Blitz and Ecolibrium worked well.

Alexey Menshikov 13 August, 2013 @ 07:51
22

Sorry about 0 issues balls, there was some issues with servers configurations. Afaik, you have to redownload again to solve this.

TOM is true free2play system, considering alot of negative feedback we read, we decided go with freemium instead. Freemium is Free+Premium = basically and advanced demo version with trophies and scoreboards working.
The ball packs priced from 1.99 to 3.99 should be enough for all wallets, plus we have infinite balls (read total unlock) for 6.99

23

Thanks for the quick bugfix. I already completed the game, so it’s not for me any more, but it’s great news for anyone still on the fence about this game. Really worth the try.

I didn’t realize you were also involved in TOM Blitz. I thought that was Alawar Entertainment, but I guess it’s a dev-publisher relationship. Really liked that game, and the support given to that game, even months after initial release.

I agree there is lots to choose for everyone. Don’t like freemium: get te Mini.
Want trophies, leaderboard etc: get this, and pay for the unlimited balls (which really IS like buying the full game)
Want a challenge: get the free game with 33 balls, and try to finish it with that.

What more can people want??

Alexey Menshikov 13 August, 2013 @ 08:37

Thanks Chris,

Well, we are not fully involved in ToM but we are friends and business partners with both Alawar (publisher) and SPL (developer). We have PS3 game with Alawar coming this week to EU stores. Since we and SPL both had launch, we’ve tested each other games (they helped us with StarDrone Extrme) and also developing a game for us now. So I know some information how its works and surely we thought to make BreakQuest like this.

Unfortunately, the reality is changed – freemium and free2play is primary business models nowadays and coming to PlayStation: Tekken, Ridge Racing. From us, as developers – we will have full unlock in our future games and lower price points items for people who don’t want to spend full price (there are many of them).

24

Alexey, I sent your twitter account a message, regarding your upcoming game(s). I hope you (or anyone from Beatshapers) to read it.

Thanks in advance.

Im ready twitter on daily or b-daily basis. Will respond latater today.

But if I redownload the game I will lose my considerable progress and if I then put my old save back (PS+), I will lose the 33 balls. It’s a catch 22.

Alexey Menshikov 13 August, 2013 @ 11:30

If you have some balls left inside the savedata you should be fine.

The PlayStation store does not even acknowledge I bought Breakquest EE freemium any more. It’s like it’s a different game in the store that I have to “buy” again. What if I redownload through my downloadlist?

Alexey Menshikov 13 August, 2013 @ 11:29

Vorlon, SCE confirmed that only way to make that 33 balls thing is afte user purchases it, remove from store visibility. you still can re-download from the list. I dont know whats happend if you re-download.

27

Great game! I easily completed the game with only 5 balls used. Everyone should give it a try. I think its the best freemium game on Vita alongside Jetpack Joyride.

However, I have encountered a glitch which has really troubled me. I have already crossed 10 million points, but the trophy for that didn’t unlock. What should I do? It would be really bad if I have to put all those hours again just for one trophy.
Hoping for a reply. Thanks for such a god game :)

28

Sorry, please ignore the glitch part. I just unlocked it.
I have to say it again though, its a great Vita freemium game, everyone should try it!

I will be glad to hear for a really god AAA game for PS VITA im a VITA owner and i will be happy for it. I hope SONY will show something great at the gamescom Good Luck!!

just redownloaded the game for the 4th time and im still getting the 0 balls error and i have been redownloading it via my download list because it won’t let me download it again please help

can you not just message me a code to redownload the game?

@Alexey Menshikov:

Thanks for the reply. The problem here is that BQEE stores the entitlement data on the Vita. Surely it would not take a huge amount of common sense to store it on a server like Ecolibrium does? Of course, then the user will have to either log in each time they start the game which is inconvenient on-the-go for many people, or periodically, which opens the Vita side up to abuse.

Either way, you’re always going to have problems with users either losing entitlements or not being able to get online when using the freemium model, so with those limitations in mind, I would opt for the highest order of common sense of all: drop freemium and just provide the game for a fixed price.

We are not classic Facebook/mobile gamers, the core demographic of the console market’s target audience is completely different to that of FB/mobile where freemium can work well. It’s been shown repeatedly that core gamers of the type who will buy a Vita are not enamoured by micro-transactions...

It’s been shown repeatedly that core gamers of the type who will buy a Vita are not enamoured by micro-transactions. It makes games feel cheap and like a money milking exercise, despite the fact that for example TOM Blitz is a good game.

But then, who am I to argue; as a developer, I’d have probably done the same thing myself. More money, right? :)

Alexey Menshikov 14 August, 2013 @ 09:50

Not really all about money DJ-Katy.
We tried to made the game to wide audience.
Dont mix freemium which is free+premium and free to play, those are different. We making game free with premium functional unlock. There is no microtransactions as TOM Blitz has.
There is a plan to have separate SKU without any purchases.

Also, I’d have a word with SCEE if I were you. In classic SCEE fashion they have botched the launch of your product for most people, and the 99% of users who don’t read this blog will have already downloaded it, received 0 balls, deleted it forever and cost you a sale.

Not every launch is perfect.

I tried every possebility, and disabled Wi-Fi every time to “hide the game”, but still 0 balls. Before latest patch, and after patch there is 33 Balls on Live Area, and 0 ingame. If i restart the game 2-3 times, Live Area also says 0 balls even with VITA offline all the time.

Drop us email at official website, ill follow with sony on your issue

@Alexey No offence intended but frankly I fail to see the difference in this case, how is buying 100 balls essentially anything other than a micro-transaction? In TOM Blitz you buy crystals and/or lives. The difference is that in TOM Blitz when your lives run out you can wait for them to recharge; in BreakQuest if you run out of balls you have to buy more to continue. That’s not a criticism, just an observation; but essentially, both games use a model whereby the amount of play time available can be extended by paying money, beit for lives or balls. So how are they different?

Not every launch is perfect, no; this one was pretty much a disaster for you given that, as said, the majority of people who receive 0 balls won’t be checking the blog and will likely feel like I did before I checked it: that the devs were tight and wouldn’t even let me try the game before I decided whether to pay more. I know that’s not what happened but that is the impression that will be left in people’s min...

As to the money, I think you missed the smiley at the end of my quip :P But I’m glad to hear a regular version is in the works, I shall look forward to that :) Good luck :)

Alexey Menshikov 14 August, 2013 @ 15:10

The difference is simple: there is limited number of balls required to finish the game. 100% done. In ToM, there is no end, thats different game.
Regular version is very close to infinite balls version anyway.
I just got releases in US, there is no zero balls issues (mostly because i emailed them last week and asked to double check).
So we will have pro version for PAL regions only.

Ah ok that makes sense, thanks for the clarification.

Glad the US launch went better for you, was it a regional thing or? I noticed that all my UK Vita owning friends got 33 balls but all my Norwegian colleagues had 0, seemed like the classic ‘SCEE forgot to include xyz in the download/server config for most territories’ scenario as so often happens outside the EFIGS countries in Europe. Might have just been a coincidence though. Either way, it’s all pretty amateur-ish in the way its run, I doubt I’m the only person outside EFIGS who is pretty fed up of it by this stage.

The thing is that we are first guys who doing stuff that way, so some issues are expected unfortunately.
We will be more clever on next title :)
