FEZ is coming soon to PS Vita, PS3 and PS4

Hi there! My name is Marie-Christine Bourdua, producer at Polytron, and I’m here today to announce that FEZ is coming soon to PlayStation Vita, PS3 and PS4. Making FEZ happen has been such an incredible journey, and we are truly thrilled to see our game come to PlayStation platforms.

FEZ development started six and a half years ago with Phil Fish’s ideas and Renaud Bédard’s programming skills. The Montréal-based studio was back then (and still is) very small but very ambitious.

Only 100 days into development, we submitted a FEZ prototype to the 2008 Independent Games Festival, and were awarded the Visual Arts award, which was a huge public awareness and morale boost. But we still had a whole game to make!

We failed to meet a million deadlines and had to overcome financial obstacles, but met along the way amazing collaborators like the game’s composer, Rich Vreeland, aka Disasterpeace, and outstanding pixel artist Paul Robertson.

The game was taking shape, had a unique atmosphere and aura of mystery that we knew would find fans. As we were wrapping up development, James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot (makers of the Sundance-nominated documentary Indie Game: The Movie) followed us through the joys and hardships of shipping a first game, and to another IGF ceremony four years later where we were awarded the Seamus McNally Grand Prize; and the game wasn’t even out yet!

Since the initial release in April 2012, we’ve been working on several versions of the game. We felt like FEZ deserved to be on every platform that can run it, and PS Vita and PS3 are a natural fit. FEZ lends itself perfectly to a “pick up and play” bite-sized mobile game experience on your way to work in the morning.

Development for these platforms is handled by Blit Software, a studio from Barcelona who is pretty much doing magic with the game. You may remember them as the guys who are making the Spelunky PS3 and PS Vita versions happen too, which we’re also much looking forward to! We’re working with them to provide a smooth and pixel-perfect version of FEZ, with every bit of content to explore that the game is known for.

36

For those who may not know, FEZ is a 2D platformer set in a 3D world. You play as Gomez, a charismatic and fluffy little white guy who wears a fez. When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, Gomez is sent out on a journey that takes him to the very end of time and space.

There are no enemies in FEZ. No bosses, no combat; in fact, no conflict of any kind. It aims to create a non-threatening world rich with ambiance, a pleasant place to spend time in. And of course, with plenty of treasures to find and secrets to uncover!

21

Take a look for yourself, and we hope you’re looking forward to the game.

If you’re going to Gamescom in Cologne this week, come to the PlayStation booth in Hall 7 and try out a work-in-progress version of FEZ on PS Vita.

Nice to see more indie games coming to PlayStation. Can’t say I’m fond of this one, didn’t hook me at all but yeah keep the indie stuff coming.

@hayzink (No2) I don’t know about number 2 since Mr Fish publicly left the gaming scene over twitter. Either way though I am stoked to get Fez. I too looked at the 360 with envious eyes. :D

@link

just googled it and he has in fact cancelled fez 2.

its a shame, i know the guy was a bit outspoken at times and i think he was a victim of his own success after showing of fez so early and getting people into it in a big way then taking so long to make the game.
people are impatient when they want something as this blog shows and
people gave the guy lots of hate about the delays and pretty much laid into the guy online over the years and he obviously had enough.

shame as if fez is anything to go by the guy had great vision.

I didn’t realise that fez would have such a impact on me but man do I live this game so much so i even changed my Xbox gamer card and created a new psn account to this (its a fez achievement) I loved it so damn much!! Hope it hits this year.

thank you!!! been dying to play fez on the vita. so excited

@hayzink
You got it all wrong when you think that any expectations or demands regarding Fez 2 resulted on this drama.
Fish used to share his unrestrained opinion on everything and he couldn’t handle it when others gave the same kind of unrestrained feedback about him. It had pretty much nothing to do with his games.

Fez is great btw., just to return to the topic that reallly matters. :)

Now this is something that was good in the Sony conference.

Crossbuy for PS3, PS4 and PSVita yes? Crossplay would be a bonus, like Superfrog HD has it for example. Don’t make it stupidly expensive though like Ducktales HD that no one bought because of that. As the game isn’t new anymore, make it reasonable around 10 Euro.

Been waiting for this news for ages!
Great to hear its finally coming to Playstation.
It’s gonna be awesome on the Vita.

Glorious pixel artwork and one of the few games to mix different pixel sizes without looking ugly.

The only question is whether I’ll play on PS Vita or PS4, release timing and the polish of each version will probably be the determining factors.

Phil Fish thinks the gaming industry is too cruel for FEZ II, but when it comes to easy money it’s not so bad isn’t it? -_-

@Golwar

must admit most of what i know about him came from the film.

i thought he was just biting back at comments made about him and his development time of fez.

i never knew all the heat he has was just the results of what you were saying, just a shame we now miss out on what could have been a great game.

We close the comments for posts after 30 days.
