The Weekend Debate

UPDATE: Sorry for the delay in announcing this week’s winners. There were some great responses this week I thought, but alas, there can be only five victors, and they are: ShadowFlex, MafiaCub, Terarded, Zankes and jonnyalpha. We’ll send your DuckTales code via a PM to your account on the official forums.

ORIGINAL POST: I’ve been on all manner of planes and trains this week, so my trusty PS Vita has been getting an absolute hammering. Even though I loaded it up with a bunch of recent releases I’ve been meaning to check out, in the end I’ve played just one game solidly all week: Spelunky.

As anyone who has booted it up will likely know, it’s utterly vicious and unrelentingly brutal, punishing the player again and again for the smallest of errors. So, why exactly do I find it impossible to put down? Every time it gives me a kicking I gladly jump straight back in and ask for more.

So, my question for you this week: do you prefer your games to treat you mean (and keep you keen), or are you happy when a title takes you by the hand and does its utmost to help you reach the finishing line?

Please qualify your answers with reasoned argument and illustrate with examples! Me? Well, I’m firmly in the former camp. Give me that sweet, sweet Dark Souls agony!

The most entertaining and/or thoughtful responses win themselves a download code for Capcom’s delightful retro re-tread DuckTales Remastered on PS3. Developer Wayforward Technologies did a first rate job on updating this platforming classic for the 21st Century. One of my favourites of 2013 so far! Good luck!
