Velocity 2X takes over Eurogamer Expo – new screens and video

V2X

Hey folks. We had such a good time showcasing Velocity 2X at the Eurogamer Expo, we’d like to share our experience with you!

First of all, we managed to find the courage to jump on stage to talk about Velocity 2X in a Developer Session. For those who missed it, we talked about how we’ve approached making a PS Minis game desirable for PlayStation 4.

Then it was time to hit the show floor to give players a preview of the game!

The Velocity 2X booth at Eurogamer Expo!

Velocity 2X takes everything that worked in Velocity Ultra and applies it to a side scrolling platformer too!

Dual Stick Run N Gun

360 shooting on foot using PS Vita/PS4 dual sticks!

That’s right, in Velocity 2X you can get out of your ship to run around on foot. You can also teledash through obstacles and throw a personal teleporter to reach high ledges and solve puzzles!

Telepod Throw

Take aim and throw a telepod to reach high ledges and solve puzzles!

Teledash Cutscene

Kai can teledash through walls, ceilings and floors in Velocity 2X.

Vokh General

We’ve also revealed the new enemy in the series, the evil Vokh! They are massive, fast and tricky to defeat because of their advanced shield technology! However, as you’ll see from the gameplay video below, Kai’s teledash creates a spacetime warp that disrupts their shield temporarily; allowing you to get some cheeky shots from behind, #winning!

Of course, once you’ve taken down the bad guys on foot, you can jump back in your Quarp Jet and continue your mission in flight.

Hostile Forces

Everything you see here is pre-alpha, which means there’s still a LOT of work to do, but as you can see the game is shaping up nicely with a really fresh art style and some dazzling visual effects like anamorphic lens flare, bloom, light refraction and dynamic environment lighting!

Next stop, particle effects!

Rifle TowersVokh Territory

HeistJBramz Jumpz

Our booth was busy throughout the show which lasted four days. Lots of people came back each day to try and beat their scores, dragging their friends with them!

Repeat_Players

We also learned lots from watching people play, such as making the telepod throwing easier, and we’ve also decided to remove the lives system. Now you can squash your ship at the bottom of the screen or jump onto boiling hot heaters as many times as you like. You won’t get many gold medals though, and we think that is punishment enough ;)

hit

We also found that the game was a hit with male and female players, as well as young and old. Broad appeal for an indie game! Yay!

BroadAppeal

We think part of the appeal is our awesome female character, Lt. Kai Tana. Here is Jack Hamilton, the chap who gets to draw Kai for a living:

We hope you like what you see folks, and until next time please follow us on Twitter @FuturLab and visit the official site for more information.

When I first heard about the addition of platforming sections I was a bit apprehensive, being unable to imagine what it would be like. But seeing the new gameplay footage and how it still has the speed of the ship sections puts all my fears to rest!

I’m loving the art style so far and am really looking forward to seeing how the finished product will compare!

The release can’t come soon enough!

I love velocity ultra and this looks like the perfect next step in the series. Considering that this is a pre alpha video it looks amazing and precisely what i didn’t know i wanted in a continuation of the series (the sidescrolling action).

if it was possible to give critique to a pre alpha build i would say that the character animations looks a little stiff, but as i understand it the animation is one of the last things to finetune in a production.

keep up the good work :)

This is looking incredible! Right up there with Resogun and inFAMOUS Second Son as my most wanted games on PS4!

Hooray! We can’t wait either!

Once again, you prove that what you promise is what you deliver. You said: “The game is made from scratch with platforming elements in mind, so they won’t feel tacked on.” and then you show us how you managed to make the platforming have the exactly same feel as ship flying parts! This is incredible, that’s all there is to say.

I would say that I am not that much interested in fancy graphics, since I’m aware some of this might be left out in Vita version, but I hope you will make both versions as close of possible. I believe in you guys, but as long as the gameplay is as awesome as it seems to be, some sacrifices will be acceptable (just keep them to minimum, ok? :)).

Thank you for putting your trust in us, that means a lot! :D

I’ll definitely be picking this up for PS Vita! I think it’s awesome the way you guys have gone from making minis to creating games for PS4 and PS Vita, and it’s clearly a testament to your talent and hard work.

Greetings from Durban, South Africa – sending lots of sunshine your way(-:
