Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut hits PS4 tomorrow

PS Plus members get a 20% discount on the space combat epic

Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut is out tomorrow on PS4. Space combat has returned to consoles for the first time in what feels like millennia.

Strike Suit Zero was born out of a passion for space combat and the sad realisation that the genre was severely under-represented. As game developers, we had the opportunity to rectify that. The Born Ready Games team grew up on a steady diet of Wing Commander, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Freelancer, Freespace – all the classics from the ’90s heyday. We wanted to create a space dogfighter in the same vein, but with an updated look and feel that would make it relevant to today’s audience.

The first thing we did was introduce a mech to the heart of the game. The Strike Suit — a fighter that can transform into a devastating suit of space armour at the touch of a button — eliminates issues with older games we refer to as “jousting” and “circle chasing.” The Strike Suit is quick and agile, allowing the player to turn 180 degrees quickly and take out any enemies that have got behind them. As a result, Strike Suit Zero has a much quicker pace than older space combat games.

The Strike Suit itself was designed by Junji Okubo, the mechanical designer behind Appleseed, Steel Battalion, and Infinite Space, among others. We combined Junji’s designs with an original soundtrack from Paul Ruskay (Homeworld), who collaborated with Japanese singer-songwriter Kokia on a number of tracks. As such, there’s an interesting blend of East-meets-West across all facets of the game’s design.

As developers, it’s not often you get the chance to revisit your game; to spruce up the visuals, add anything time didn’t permit the first time around, and to make improvements based on community feedback. The resulting game – the Director’s Cut – is the definitive Strike Suit Zero experience. The campaign has been restructured, meaning the player gets into the Strike Suit – and thus the meat of the action – much quicker. We’ve added a load of new VO, expanding the story and – crucially – updated the look of the game.

Dan Lodge, Lead Artist, writes:

“It’s not often an artist gets a second chance at doing the art for the same game. Luckily for the artist team here at Born Ready, that’s exactly what we’ve had the opportunity to do.

“One of the first teams in recent times to take on the challenge of producing a modern space combat game, we had very few direct references to draw from when we made Strike Suit Zero. This resulted in us cutting some corners that, as a small indie developer, we simply didn’t have time to fix for the original release.

“Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut has given us the opportunity to directly apply the lessons we learned the first time around and revisit so many of the things we had wanted to before. With over a gigabyte of extra texture memory unlocked for us to use on the PS4 version, we immediately ditched the tiling texture technique we had to use in the original.

“We set about diligently rebuilding assets from the original game at an incredible pace and with a dramatic increase in quality. Great leaps were made in our approach, particularly to texturing, both technically and stylistically. Many of the ships in game are now truer to the original designs by Junji Okubo and they all have a much more coherent and convincing look.

“When our time had run out, the team had exceeded our targets and replaced almost every asset in the game; the difference is clear.”

Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut is available on PlayStation Store tomorrow for £15.39/€17.99/AU$25.95, with a 20% Plus discount for two weeks. To address a couple of questions I anticipate being asked: the PS4 version of the game takes advantage of DualShock 4’s speaker for radio-chatter, and the touch pad for targeting. You can also remote play the game using your PS Vita. Lovely.

Will there be a demo?

1.1

A demo? On the PS4? Don’t make me laugh. Never happen. Everything that was wrong with the PS3 EU Store has just shifted over to the PS4.
No demo’s.
No videos (or very few).
Unbelievably overpriced.
Late releases than the US (the main thing I’m absolutely sick of).

I actually bought this today for my XBOX One. Microsoft have always managed a worldwide launch on all their digital content. But as SCEWW is split in to subsidiaries, there is no uniform release. Meaning EU will continue to release games later than the US.

At least Born Ready got my money, regardless of platform. I really thought this gen would be different.

Lol ‘at least born ready got my money’????

Why be so pleased that someone got your money? If you’re so happy to give your money to people send some my way and I promise I’ll pay 50% of what you give me towards your mortgage! That’s a better deal than you’ll get from your best friends at Microsoft, born ready or sony!!!

Message me your payment details and we’ll get started.

1.3

What? You think developers should just give their games away for free? You one of those “self entitled” gamer’s?

I was simply referring to my choice of purchase for a particular platform. Sony are the one’s loosing out in this instance due to their archaic business practice., not Born Ready. My point being, SCEE messing around as usual hasn’t affected the developer.

Looking forward to this

Can’t wait… a multiplayer would be great at some point and an arcade mode with countless waves of enemies which would become more tough as time passes!!

Question for Born Ready.

The check-point system is still one of the worst examples in gaming history. No idea why you didn’t readdress one of the biggest complaints from the original release. Being forced to trawl through 20 minutes of gameplay due to a poorly designed cheap death, is beyond frustrating.

The artists have done themselves proud, but the designers need to hang their heads i shame. SSZ:DC isn’t the type of tough game that requires skill to dominate (a la Dark Souls), it’s hard because it hasn’t been designed very well. And no mini-map? Seriously? That was another big complaint.

All the directors edition has done is include the DLC, Strike Suits, and trick-out the visuals. The same issues with the core gameplay exist in this version.

Can’t wait… :)

I agree that there’s a gap in the market for a good space shooter but at £15 for a game from a developer we know nothing about and with no demo this game isn’t it. What happened to the ‘try all games before you buy’ promise that was made when the PS4 was announced? There are virtually no demos for the PS4. Demos will sell games.

^This.

“What happened to the ‘try all games before you buy’ promise that was made when the PS4 was announced?” you’ve just nailed it there, no need to say more.

Also, all demos I’ve played so far, and there were only 2, I got them from the US store with my us account so even with demos we lose -.-”

Flight stick support ?

Haha .. I should have read the PSblog before buying strider. Ho well, strider is EPIC… This game looks pretty cool, so I will probably get it tomorrow.

The overpriced digital games trickle for the PS4 continues. Strike Suit Zero got a 3/10 from Eurogamer on PC. I’m picking this release can’t be that much better.
How about dropping some prices on PSN for some of the launch games. Killzone and AC is STILL $109 here in NZ.

In my situation I don’t have a problem with digital pricing. I game share with a pal, so paying half price on everything is a bonus.

why sony doesnt make the same policies like Ms wich forced a develloper to put a demo for every game that is sold on the XBLA, that a point , where now on ps4 we a 2 or 3 demos for 20 games, and no more video download, but a streaming that sucks.. because u cant choose quality…sony have to put big effort to catch up with Ms on this and on the PSN stabiblity wich sucks with maintenance every two weeks, compared to the 300.000 servers MS have and zero maintenance ever that shut down the entire network…

12.1

The difference between MS and Sony, regarding their approach to game demo’s, is MS host and pay for the storage and downloads of the demo themselves. Sony on the other hand require that the developer cover all the costs and hosting. Which naturally for a small indie outfit is just not financially viable. This is why Sony don’t insist on demo’s, and why only roughly 30% of PS3 games ever had them. The PS4 will be no different (and perhaps even worse now they’re insisting on pushing so many indie games).

But to be fair, the XBO hasn’t been that great regarding demo’s either so far. Maybe they’ve decided to go down the awful Sony route this time. To save some money.

Has anybody downloaded and played this yet – would like to get an actual gamers opinion before I splash the cash

So it’s the middle of the day and the game isn’t in the Store yet. Not even in the “coming soon” section.
