New Bound by Flame trailer shows off RPG combat mechanics

Take a closer look at how the forthcoming PS4 RPG plays

Hi PlayStation Blog readers! This is Walid, producer at Spiders Studios. With the release of Bound by Flame, our latest game and our first RPG for PS4, getting closer, we decided to tease you a little more on the combat system the game offers, with an extensive Combat Trailer explaining its mechanics. Enjoy!

Bound by Flame features real time combat that is both tactically deep, dynamic and spectacular. Defeating your enemies won’t be an easy task, as every single monster and creature you’ll encounter has its own behavior, strengths and weaknesses you’ll have to exploit in order to tear them into pieces.

You’ll be given access to three different skill trees to develop your character, each of them with its very unique skills. The Warrior uses two-handed swords, axes and war-hammers to break his enemies’ defenses and inflict heavy damage, while the stealthy Ranger dual-wields daggers to sneak upon his enemies in order to deal devastating backstabs, before engaging the survivors in fast-paced melee combat. The Pyromancer channels the fiery powers of the demon: hurl fireballs, light your weapon on fire, invoke flame spirits, and much more!

In combat, you’ll be able to toggle between the Warrior and Ranger stances in a blink of an eye, to adapt your tactic on the fly according to the enemies you’re facing. The rich bestiary of the game will throw strong and varied foes at you: some of them might inflict poison, while some other will use long range attacks, while physically stronger enemies will try to tear you to pieces with powerful melee strikes.

Crafting has a very important role in Bound by Flame. Nearly all weapons and pieces of armor are customisable, letting you improve their effectiveness, while also adding beneficial effects that suit your fighting style. Adding a new pomel to a sword may greatly increase your damage, but it could also reduce your attack speed. Choose wisely before crafting new components to your equipment!

Your chosen companion will also be a decisive requirement for victory. Do you need a defensive healer, an unyielding tank, an aggressive sorcerer, or an elusive archer? Choose wisely who will fight along with you, because if you throw yourself into battle without any plan in mind and no ally to watch your back, you’re most likely to get overwhelmed by your opponents!

It sounds great, looks great. I hope it plays great too.

Im going to hurt people fellings but true has come out that i think its not next gen for ps4 since be on ps3 as well and gameplay not next gen and aslo face facts its a dark souls copy and paste so its going to get bad review.

PS if want game like this for next gen the true next gen is witcher 3 since cant run on ps3 or xbox360.

Say what?
I would happily play day something similar To PC version of Dragon Age Origins on my PS4. Or Mass Effect. Heck, even DA2!
Fast loads, long drawing distance, good looking
What even is “next gen gameplay” ?
A good RPG in morpheus or similar, YES, wow, really looking forward to that, but that is years away.
Next, being a dark souls copy, umm maybe? It got some of that vibe to it. But is that a bad thing? If it is well done and fun to play then who cares?

this game is more like Kingdom of Amalur than Dark Souls, it looks a lot less hardcore than the Souls games.
I love Action RPGs in fantasy settings so I’m looking forward to this one!

Well its looks of the game and the gameplay itself but gameplay you see in this video what can be done on the PS3 and xbox360 but sometimes might be bad thing because people who brought a ps4 is getting next gen games not games what can be done on ps3.

Think I will get this for PS4, but would really like to know what the save points are like, really cannot face another dark-souls type save system.

You can save at any point in the game except during fights or cutscenes.
The game also auto-saves frequently at key points of the progression.

Totally agree, i like a good challenge but never liked Dark Souls for the save system and also the crappy control of the character, it was like they made it react like a zombie doll just for the sake of killing you more often, i dont stand games where my character dont reacts fast to my actions, specially when facing enemies that hurt you allot if your not on your toes.
I hope this game plays better.

ps. i’m also a big fan of witcher and this game reminds me allot of that game so naturally i will give this a try.

I don’t think this looks like Dark Souls at all. If anything, it has a ‘The Witcher 2’ meets ‘Kingdoms of Amalur’ vibe. The combat gameplay in Dark Souls is slow and this looks much more fast-paced. It has skill trees, which Dark Souls does not feature at all.

I don’t understand some comparisons on the Internet, honestly.
I also don’t understand why it’s not new-gen because it will also release on last-gen consoles. It will certainly not look the same, or run as smoothly on last-gen consoles as it will in new-gen.
So, by that logic, Watch_Dogs is not new-gen, even though it looks incredible.

Agreed. This has attacks mapped to buttons and skill trees, it looks more like a Darksiders type than a Dark Souls

Regular saves and the skilltree are selling this to me – Argos (UK) have it for pre-order at £37.99 (PS4), seems to be cheapest I can see.

I like the look of the game, seems to be plenty of variety. Camera angle looks like it could be a little dodgy though.

Damn it they didn’t remove the car seller voice from the trailer.

Will it have split-screen/same screen co-op?
If not can it be patched in later?
Will definitely buy this if co-op is included.

To all those that have posted negative comments/opinions about this game, I didn’t realise that there was a ton of this type of game available for the PS4?
As it is, I’ll be buying it and enjoying it for a good while. :-)

I think they made a mistake, this must be the ps3 trailer, so where is the one for the ps4?

nope there no mistake looks same on ps3 as well other games like watch dogs, dragon age 3, Mad Max all this games getting for ps4 can do on ps3 so really its good year for ps3 not ps4

+Walid Miled When will the trophy list be revealed?

Day one for me i love my RPGs.

Seriously, what’s up with everyone comparing this to Dark Souls?
Those people probably don’t know any other RPGs, since it’s not even very similar to Dark Souls and not every medieval-themed game is automatically a rip-off of another. Like some said, this is definitely more like Kingdoms of Amalur rather than Dark Souls.
And who cares if it’s also coming to PS3 and not PS4 only? That way PS4 gets more games and PS3 owners don’t miss out. Just because the PS3 can run the game aswell, doesn’t mean it’s gonna be a crap game with no effort put into it. Also, the PS3 and PS4 versions aren’t 100% the same. PS4 versions usually have better graphics and a few more features.

I’ve been looking forward to it since I first saw it and I still can’t wait for it. Looks overall amazing and the gameplay looks great.

This actually looks really good! Definitely putting it on the to buy list for sure!
