R-Type Dimensions blasts onto PS3 this month

Classic arcade shoot ‘em up hits PlayStation Store on 21st May

Hola, PlayStation Blog readers, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I hope everyone is having a splendid week thus far, and that you all had an awesome weekend. May is one of my favorite months. It starts off early with Star Wars “May the 4th” festivities, and then jumps immediately into Cinco de Mayo, without a break in between the two days. It’s like one big 48-hour celebration, and I love it! But now that the party is over you may find yourselves asking “well, what else do we have to look forward to this month?” Oh, I don’t know… how about Tozai Games bringing R-Type Dimensions to PlayStation Store for PS3 on 21st May! Yup, that’s right, the PS3 shoot ’em up library is about to explode with not only one, but two fully-remastered R-Type games with new HD graphics, music, and features!

Tozai is going at this one with their lasers-a’-blazing, bringing both R-Type and R-Type II together as R-Type Dimensions. Players will be getting R-Type, featuring all eight original R-Type levels, and R-Type II, featuring all six original levels. But wait, hold the phones, there’s more! Tozai isn’t just releasing some dusty old arcade ports, no way! They are giving this legendary series the special treatment it so rightfully deserves!

As previously mentioned, these are fully-remastered games. Players are going see, hear, and experience R-Type and R-Type II like never before! Both games have been given updated HD graphics, pulsing new audio tracks, and to top it off, players can even switch between new hi-res 2D/3D graphics, or play the classic versions with the push of a button.

Tozai is also adding all-new features like Infinite Mode and Level Select that will allow players to learn the levels inside and out so they can shoot for those perfect, 1CC runs! And if that wasn’t enough, they are also including local “couch co-op,” because it’s far more fun to blast Bydo Empire baddies with a friend, a slow motion play function, adding controller key configuration, worldwide leaderboards, player statistics, and of course, PS3 Trophies!

To celebrate the upcoming release, Tozai Games has prepared a preview trailer for R-Type Dimensions, and we’re going to share it right here, on PlayStation Blog, first!

We can’t wait to see you guys lighting up the worldwide leaderboards on 21st May. Shmup fans never cease to blow my mind with their insanely high scores, nail-biting near misses, and jaw-droppingly perfect runs. You guys leave me totally speechless with how awesome you are.

We’re a little under two weeks out from take-off, but in the meantime we invite you all to visit the R-Type Dimensions site at

How about a Vita version?

zalwelgoedgaan 07 May, 2014 @ 21:56

If it would be 60fps on the Vita, then abso-damn-lutely yes.

madmanwithabox12 07 May, 2014 @ 19:09

Would love to see this on Vita! I loved R-Type Delta on PS1.

Sounds good, part of me wishes all these retro rereleases alowed you to switch to the classic game.

Koki_Monster 07 May, 2014 @ 19:31

Good stuff. It’s a shame more of the PS1 shmups (like the R-Type games) aren’t available in the EU, so this goes some way to making amends.

I’d like to add to the support for a Vita version. It is perfect for shmups, but has precious few (we don’t even get the PSP ones like Gradius Collection on our store..)

Damn, I was always more of a Gradius person than R-Type :-(

Great! I already have it on the 360, but I’ll gladly double-dip. Any info on the price?

psychobudgie 07 May, 2014 @ 19:49

Vita wants some R-Type luvin!

Would defo buy this for my Vita as it gets more play than my PS3 or PS4!

GOD i played R-Type 2 to death on the Amiga years ago :D Shame all the R-Type games are not included + it’s not coming to the PS4 to :(

How about PS4 ??

Manga_Kid_UK 07 May, 2014 @ 23:08

R-Type please put on PS4 i love this game

Just when i thought it was going to stay as a permanent Japan exclusive on PS3… this is another little miracle after UFO Interactive’s teasing of the EU release of their Raiden IV Overkill. The West needs more shmups like these. Now, if only someone would bring RayStorm HD…

deathnote2000 08 May, 2014 @ 11:52

Raiden IV has been rated by PEGI so it should be fairly soon. The problem with RayStorm though is it’s currently located at SquareEnix so don’t think that’ll happen. :(

Yeah, i guess it’s too late for RayStorm HD. Even stuff like Ketsui will never ever see the light of the day in the West, as Cave recently evaporated from existence over here. Anyway, thanks for telling me about the PEGI rating, didn’t know about that!

Oh and i forgot to ask, what’s the price of R-Type Dimensions?

DoitsuJinSan 08 May, 2014 @ 07:43

On their Facebook page it says 9.95$.
Was released on xbox 360 feb. 2009….

Healthhazard41 08 May, 2014 @ 10:12

Release it on all platforms people shouldn’t miss out because they sacrificed their ps3 for a ps4

deathnote2000 08 May, 2014 @ 11:51

Better yet why would you sacrifice your PS3 at this point in time when there’s so much coming. Crazy move…

Well this game should be on PS4,PS3,PSPVITA would made more money and other news why there another sly collection since said on Amazon uk saying Sly Copper Collection for PSPVITA out may 27 is game already out?

Would love this on my Vita please.

Looks great. Would love it on Ps4.
