Exploration adventure Ether One coming soon to PS4

A closer look at White Paper Game’s acclaimed debut

Hey! We’re White Paper Games and we’re REALLY excited to announce that we’re joining the PlayStation family. We released a game called Ether One back in March 2014 on PC and we’re now focused on developing on PS4. The exciting thing about releasing on PS4 is that we’ll be creating Ether One from scratch in the new Unreal Engine 4. That means it’s not just a direct port, we’ll be re-building it again in UE4 to make it feel great on console.

To give you a little background about our studio, we’re a team of five from Manchester in the UK. Ether One was our first game and we’re really proud of what we achieved in a short space of time. From having an 81 Metacritic score to being nominated for a Develop Award in the Use of Narrative, we’ve been blown away by how good the response from people has been.

We have to admit, we love our PlayStations, so when Sony asked us if we wanted to be on the platform our answer was unanimously YES! Sony have been really great providing a small studio like ours with so much support and the opportunity to get onto PS4 so we’d like to give them a massive thank you.

So, what is Ether One?

Ether One is a first-person exploration game with optional puzzle solving. If you like to explore worlds and unravel the story without worrying about puzzles then you’re free to do so. However, if you’re the old school adventure, pen and paper type player that loves to solving all the puzzles then Ether One has a lot of that for you too. If you choose to pull apart everything in the world you’ll be rewarded with a deeper narrative understanding.

Our aim with Ether One is to tell a story about how fragile the human mind can be and what it would mean for someone close to you to not even be able to recognise you anymore. A lot of our family members have struggled with the illness of dementia and we felt it was something close to our hearts which we had to explore in our game. A lot of you reading may have experienced the effects of dementia first hand, if you have, we hope a game like Ether One will help you relate to your own experiences.

Your role in Ether One is that of a Restorer, an individual with the ability to project himself into the mind of someone suffering from mental illness in the hopes of restoring their memories. Once inside the mind, you will have to find the broken fragments of your patient’s memories in order to heal and restore them By piecing together these fragments, you’ll start to understand more about your patient’s life, where they grew up and what your place is in all of this.

We hope we can bring you a new type of game for your consoles that you haven’t played before. We’ll be sure to keep you all updated on our progress and since Ether One is already out on PC, it means we can spend a lot of time focusing on refining the experience for console. We can’t say enough how excited we are to be joining you all on PS4 and can’t wait to share more of it with you.

Hi Pete, this looks really exciting! I love me a good exploration game! And the theme is also hitting close to home… I am kind of surprised I haven’t heard about this before:)
So do you guys an ETA for release?

Hey egeberg84, no ETA just yet since we don’t want to say a date and not hit it. The game is finished and released on PC but we’re not doing a direct port. We’re rebuilding the game in the Unreal Engine 4 which means starting from the ground up. If you follow our progress you’ll see we already have a lot of the art in the game. A lot of it now it making sure it runs with the Playstation and programming all the gameplay. Since we know the design of the game it should be a straight forward process but you never know what bumps we’ll come across. As soon as we’re in a comfortable position we’ll be sure to post ETA for release :)

Do you pronounce ‘ether’ to rhyme with ‘leather’ or ‘reefer’? 8-)

For me it would be to rhyme with reefer … like ethernet :)

Exactly like malh67 says, Ethernet! :)

Lol see now I pronounce ethernet to rhyme with ‘leather(net)’.

The only time I’ve heard people rhyme it with ‘reefer’ is Americans on the telly!

This sounds really interesting and the trailer looks interesting too. Will be keeping my eye on this!

Thank you! We’re working hard on it!

I saw this at Rezzed back in March and at the time was hoping this would come to a console (PC’s have this tendency to develop problems when I play on them for some reason) and what do you know. :D

Thanks for stopping by at Rezzed, homerthegreat! Appreciate you checking out our game.

Do you want to buy some grammar and punctuation too?

Isn’t it funny how people from non-English speaking countries speak better English than those whose first language is English?

Any word on Project Morpheus support?

Unfortunately no word on Morpheus support Spider-jam. However we do support the Oculus Rift on the PC version so we’d love to integrate it when we get round to it :)

Wow, this looks cool! Love these kind of abstract “trippy” exploration games, instantly reminds me of Unfinished swan and Datura, two of my favorite last gen Indies.

Awesome Stonesthrow. They’re both cool games – hopefully Ether One will be right up your street too!

This game will be refreshing, something different from just shooting or jumping, or collecting, etc, I’m looking forward to it – I was enjoying solving paper trail in Infamous so will defiantly give this game a go.

Great to hear STSunited, thank you!

Can’t wait to try this!!

I’m so chuffed for you guys!!
I worked with Ben Hill in his retail days, whilst he was at uni. I’m super pleased that his and your dream has been realised. WELL DONE TO ALL AT WHITE PAPER GAMES!!

Representing the North west!!

Awesome! I’ll let Ben know TheDrSanchez :) Thank you!

It’s interesting that all the games coming to the PS4 I’m interested in are from European devs.

Just goes to prove its not always grim up north and some of the most creative people in the UK are from the North West.

Like that old saying “London thinks its the centre of the universe but Manchester knows it is”

Agree with the London part, think your about 30 or so miles off on second bit though, lol.. seriously, Manchester is a great city, but they had no choice but to be to keep up with us at other end of motorway, the centre of the ‘world’ for a long time, cheeky though how they dug the canal to get more wealth, was t’mill’s not enough.
love the look of game, this is the sort of indie i don’t mind, greatness awaits indeed.

Is it me or this game is just much more interactive version of Dear Esther?
