Going deeper with In Space We Brawl’s highly customisable multiplayer

Take a closer look at how the PS3/PS4 couch co-op shoot ‘em up plays

Hi, PlayStation fans! After the announcement of In Space We Brawl at the Sony press conference at Gamescom last month, we’ve been working very hard adding content to the game. So, here is a little update about the gameplay, with a major focus on the main feature: the 100+ combinations of spaceships and weapons!

Here at the studio we have always enjoyed couch multiplayer games and we usually spend a lot of time playing together, during lunch breaks or late in the evening. When we started to design the basics of In Space We Brawl, we had an idea: expanding the classic local multiplayer formula, taking inspiration from other competitive gaming genres.

Spaceships

In many couch multiplayer games, there is only one character or a very limited set of characters, so that competition is based solely on personal skill, reflexes and… luck! On the other hand, we liked the huge rosters of traditional fighting games, since they add so much to gameplay in term of variety and replay value.

That’s why In Space We Brawl features 11 spaceships, each one with different features and stats. You could avoid enemy bullets and wandering asteroids with the Pulsar, the fastest ship in the game. Or you could rely on the size and armour of the Juggernaut, the sturdiest spaceship we’ve designed.

The stats of a ship are shown in the selection screen, so that you can look for the one that fits your style, or that could give you that extra something in a specific area of the game. Will you adapt to your opponents, countering their choices? Or will you impose your will and supremacy on the battlefield?

Weapons

But a spaceship alone is useless without a weapon, right? In Space We Brawl also features 11 tools of cosmic destruction that you can use to annihilate your rivals. Gatling guns, lasers, rockets, flamethrowers, sniper rifles are only a few among the weapons that you can equip on your favorite ship, looking for the perfect mix.

Which leads to the 100+ combinations! We have spent an incredible amount of time balancing all the combinations between spaceships and weapons. We have been testing every single configuration against many others, tuning all the parameters and fixing any possible flaw.

On the other hand we are aware that as soon as the game is live, you will be playing the game in your own way. In spite of all our tests, we would be able to discover so much about your tastes, your habits and the game itself…

…And that’s exactly what we’ll do! We will be gathering all sorts of data and statistics from your matches, so that we know how to tune and improve the game as you are playing. Moreover, since all the game parameters are stored on Sony’s servers, we will be able to apply these changes on the fly!

That is not all, obviously. Once the game is released, you can let us know about your experience in many other ways as well. You can write an email, reach us on our social channels and tell us what you think. We will be reading all your comments, striving to shape In Space We Brawl into the couch mayhem you have always dreamed of!

In the meantime, we also plan to start streaming our own matches: follow our Twitch channel if you want to see the game in action. Knowledge is power, and you could learn some nasty tricks in advance to gain an edge on your friends!
