An update on DRIVECLUB

More information on connectivity issues and the PlayStation Plus Edition

Hi everyone. As many of you will already be aware, the DRIVECLUB team has made the difficult decision to postpone the release of the PlayStation Plus Edition due to multiplayer connectivity issues following the game’s launch yesterday in North America and today in much of Europe. See here for a full statement on the situation from Evolution Studios.

The team is working around the clock to rectify these problems, and we apologise both for the delay in delivering the PS Plus Edition and for any difficulty that you may have connecting to the game’s multiplayer servers.

I preordered the full game from my local retailer (in the USA) and was pretty bummed about the servers not working yesterday, but lets face it. Many games have issues on launch day, and some take longer to sort out than others. It sucks but it is what it is. When everything is up and 100% working and people are playing, those people won’t be thinking about two missed days of online play. They’ll be thinking “wow this is a great game” if they like it, or “wow this is a bad game” if they don’t. I personally am loving the single player “Tour” mode in the meantime. Good practice for someone who has been out of the racing genre since the original Forza and GT3.

Coolest thing I’ve seen in the game yet isn’t even related to the gameplay at all. The cars are at the starting line and I’m just watching the pre-race camera roam around the map (which they all look really good). The camera pans over the cars and I see a plastic grocery bag blowing towards my car. I’m like “noes, don’t l...

So Evolution Studios basically :

1. Organized a deal with a limited edition of DriveClub that all PS+ accounts would get
2. Made the PS+ edition require online
3. Set the PS+ edition up so that it would use the same infrastructure as the normal edition
4. Scaled the server infrastructure horribly wrong, making both the day one purchasers and the PS+ accounts extremely unhappy

Problem for me is how they could do both 2 and 4 when they must have some knowledge of how many PS+ accounts there are. Why not skip making it require online?

@Helrain: Improving the servers is not something you do on one single day. They knew perfectly well this would happen, and should have planned ahead, by getting enough servers online PRE-launch, or not schedule the full and Plus edition at the same day. They could easily have scheduled the PS Plus on October 1st, the ACTUAL correct date for the Plus update anyway.

This is just poor planning.

Here is a quote from the Sony CFO (found at DualShockers) and Andrew House has said similar things.

“Our forecast included investment in networks. As you know, currently we have almost 52 million users and as you may know PS4 has social networking features that double or triple total traffic and sessions. That requires the network investment to handle those kind of sessions and traffic.”

“As for the progress of the investment, we have been investing, but we are forecasting significant increase in the later half of the year, during the year end season in November and December, so investment in the network services will be increased in the latter half of this fiscal year.”

“About of the order of magnitude of the investment, that has quite the magnitude, but at the same time the magnitude is almost at the same level as the payment fees level.”

A reviewer on a Dutch site says he experienced these server issues last week while reviewing the game, so they must ve been aware of these problems for at least a week. At least we are being informed this time so thats an improvement.

Last week when there was another blog post about this game I predicted two things:
1. The game would be delayed again (as it was just before the console was released).
2. That their attitudes to their customers wouldn’t change.

I got a chastising retort from a member of the dev team telling me that was an unfair judgement and that no such thing would happen.
DriveClub? Apology? Now?

Then again if I got my first prediction right then the second probably happened as well. Even this post was released by Fred, not a member of the dev team. It just goes to show how much they really care about their customers. Not at all.

Fred is presumably a PR guy, this is EXACTLY what his job is. The devs on the other should be busy trying to improve the server code if its not handling as many people as they expected. I would much rather they do that than waste time on here.

As long as SOMEONE is keeping us informed, it doesn’t matter who.

1. Sony promises that people who pre-order the PS4 and have a PS+ subscription will get the game for free.
2. The game is delayed.
3. Sony announces that the ps+ version will be slightly shorter than the original
4. It is revealed that the ps+ version will get only 1/5 of the game, thus being a demo.
5. The game causes the October ps+ offers to be pushed back a week (for what reason, we still don’t know. and boy, that sure worked well)
6. From what i read from ps+ users in japan who were able to try the game before they deleted it from the psn, it really is a small demo. Out of 10 events you have access to 3. In order unlock the other 7, you need 14 stars. On completion, the 3 events offer only 12 stars. (still hope that they will fix this).
7. The demo is delayed again because Sony feels that people who payed for it deserve to play it first.

As it stands, we don’t have a confirmed date for the PS Plus Edition. As soon as we do, we’ll let you know. As above, Evolution will be updating their Twitter and Facebook on a rolling basis in the meantime, so do keep your eyes there.

Agreed. I was only planning to mess around offline at first anyway.

I guess they are afraid if they launched it without online that by the time online DID come, people wouldn’t bother to go back on it to see what its like, first impressions and all that.

That said I think its the wrong approach. They are just upsetting those of us who WERE anxiously awaiting the game and willing to give it a chance. There seems to be plenty of people claiming they won’t even download it on principle, delaying the game for those will make no difference at all. So as usual, they are just upsetting the people they really need to be convincing this is worth their while.

I feel extremely cheated to not even be able to play the single player when the US can. I have a rotten cold this week and was planning to use this game to take my mind off it.

This game is actually one of the poorer racing games I’ve played. I actually agree with the lower scoring reviews I’ve read. I’m quite disappointed and it only cost £35. I had NFS rivals to tide me over and that’s actually a better racing game

Funily enough DRIVECLUB was beta tested under the guise of Project Cupcake. The beta finished weeks ago so if there was a problem why not address potential delays then. Also the fact that the American market has cause a delay by overloading the servers just shows that the thinking behind release day schedule is just full of stupidity.

DRIVECLUB has go from a mess to an absolute farce, its snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. With 1 Million + People in the UK with PS4’s not able to download there free game from a UK developer, the image is tard.

I probably will play DRIVECLUB at some point, but for the most part it’ll be the last thing I play from Evolution Studios unless it’s amazing because this whole thing has been handled so badly. Did you not learn anything from the PR disaster that was PASBR? Way to go SCEE and Evolution, pat yourselves on the back and take a bow, you’ve earned it.

I mean it’s not like you should be able to query SCE (as you’re a first party) how many PS+ users there are on the PS4 ecosystem and then plan server load and capacity accordingly. I was looking forward to this game, but after finding out about its limited range of cars (EU only, save 1 US car), I will not buy this game. Releasing a game with only Eu cars, and no US or JP cars, is like releasing a FPS with only a slingshot as a weapon, and let you pick what color rock you shoot…. Variation must be a word Evolution studios don’t have in their vocabulary it seems.

This game has been an utter shambles from the start. Everything, literally every word that came out of Rushy’s mouth at the the reveal was a lie. Go back and watch his reveal, the only part of the whole thing that hasn’t changed is the name DriveClub.

And no, this isn’t an unexpected thing at all, its bad planning. You have have the demo available for every Plus sub, there are 4 million Plus subs on PS4 so you make sure you have server capacity to cope. Its really not difficult, have no lessons been learned from the crumble of the Destiny servers during the beta just a few short weeks ago?

When TWO years ago you guys thought this was a good idea NO ONE thought this would have some impact on the servers? Every bloody trailer has the online social component in there blaring about it.

I love my PS4 and Vita but It’s disgusting really when looking at the overall picture of what PSN is compared to Xbox Live! If Destiny can handle 4 million beta players at once then surely Sony should have had their **** together for some racing game, especially when they said all networks and servers would be improved when they announced the sub.

Hey, you’re not supposed to complain.. I’m pretty sure it’s again the terms from today. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… This isn’t a battle we’ve already lost. Nobody bothers to address any of the issues, with the service, what you’re saying and I’m guessing many more. A massive wave of cancellations and boycotting the sales should fix things up. I hope they get it all sorted out soon enough. Have Shadows of Mordor to pass the time until then. It’s just a shame they didn’t do a stress test beta to all PS+ users. One track, one car, one hour test could have made a difference. It would have shown how the server handles that stress during the one hour then be more prepared for the release.

Say goodbye to Evolution Studio. The last games of the Studio were pretty much lackluster, their quality output pretty much questionable. If Sony is able to close a Studio that defined a Generation and Racing in general (Studio Liverpool) i do not see any future for you guys. They killed wipeout. A game that delivered on ps1, ps2, ps3 and vita.

Make all the complaints about server issues and late releases you want, but don’t ask or demand for studios to be closed. There are valid complaints and statements to be made, but the firing of staff and the closing of an entire studio because you don’t like their content and they came across issues with their latest release is not even remotely valid. Whoever got paid a ton of money to come up with #4ThePlayers (catchy but totally inappropriate) should be made to give it back and it be spent on more servers (and decent ones at that).

I am only commenting to let Sony know how many people are disappointed with the whole saga from start to finish, from the initial delay to finding out it will not just be ps+ to this delay (and the average reviews). So while all the other regions get to continue playing offline, we just have to sit and wait.
Yet again EU continues to get the short end of every stick. If you had released this on the first Wednesday of the month like you were supposed to, this would have been fixed by now.

As far as I’m concerned the game is in a perfect working state, because I have no intentions of using the online modes. So what is the reason I cannot download and play it? It’s nothing short of region favouritism.

As it stands, there is too much server traffic so no one can download digital editions yet nor gain the possibility to play online.

Yes, you can still download the full game and play it as normal. As above, you may experience some multiplayer connectivity problems – which is what the team is working around the clock to address. Single player is unaffected.

If single-player is unaffected and people can download the full digital version, then how the hell is the PS+ Edition any different?

It’s because we don’t have to fork out an extortionate amount isnt it?

Well you forget one thing, it’s for PS+ subscribers, you know the thing that’s supposed to be a premium service? We’re also shelling out money for a service that has currently been s*****g on us the past few months.
