Serve up righteous justice in Tennis in the Face, out on PS4 today

Take on creepy clowns, corrupt riot police and mad scientists in 10tons’ wacky latest

Hello! I’m glad to be back on the PlayStation Blog to say a few words about our new game, Tennis in the Face, which arrives on PS4 today.

As you might guess from the title, Tennis in the Face isn’t a very serious game. Nor a tennis game, really. Instead it’s more about smashing furious tennis serves at creepy clowns, corrupt riot police, mad scientists and a couple of other worthy targets of some tough tennis street justice.

The set up is easy to grasp; each level contains a handful of enemies, which you must knock out by hitting them with a tennis ball. The enemies are lurking behind walls and obstacles, so you need to bounce the ball a couple of times to reach them.

Why? Well, you’ll just have to download the free trial for the full story. It’s about an evil energy drink corporation, a ruined pro-tennis career and one angry Pete Pagassi.

I should also mention the hilarious ragdoll effect used on the enemies. Every so often the chaos unfolds in spectacular manner, when an explosive chain reaction sends a clown flying through the air and landing on a riot police, with both tumbling down to squash a hipster fondling a smartphone. Tennis in the Face is a great specimen of slapstick comedy in a game.

Tennis in the Face is also coming to PS Vita in the next few weeks. We intended the PS Vita version to launch at the same time with the PS4 version, but multiplatform game development is sometimes quite an adventure!

We have also started production on two brand new games lately, and I hope to be able to announce them in early 2015. Stay tuned, and serve some swift tennis justice in the meantime!

I don’t like tennis generally but this looks like a great physics game. :)

Tennis is fun. Ever played it in real life?

Oh yeah and I am AWFUL. Forget keeping the ball on the court, I can’t even nail down making contact with the ball AT ALL or consistently anyway :/

By the way, the video is still private. You might want to fix that.

Aaaah, okay. This is basically Angry Birds with a political statement.

Will it be cross buy with the Vita version when that releases?

Jaakko Maaniemi 13 November, 2014 @ 08:47

We’ll definitely try to enable crossbuy. But there’s been quite a bit of issues with crossbuy, so we won’t mention crossbuy that much until we see it working in real life environment. It’s a complicated issue and we’ll definitely try to make it work the best for the average person.

That sounds interesting – from the outside it looks as though cross buy should be a very simple concept once you’ve got two versions; ‘just’ a matter of having the store record that people have both when they buy one. What sort of issues are you seeing?

Jaakko Maaniemi 14 November, 2014 @ 08:54

Unfortunately we can’t go into detail about the issues we’ve had with crossbuy. It’s related to what platforms the crossbuy includes, and if the titles support free trials. We have prioritized free trials, as we feel it’s good to provide everyone a chance to try the game before buying. Or to just play free demos. Crossbuy would probably benefit fewer people, although it’d be a super cool feature to have.

Looks very similar to King Oddball which was a great game that I completed not so long ago – can’t wait to play this too. Indie games do have their place on the PS4 – especially when done right.

Tennis in the Face is a sort of descendant of King Oddball!

King Oddball was a game we made because we wanted to try our hand with physics based puzzles. It turned out great and we had fun doing it, so we wanted to do something similar. So we added the ragdoll physics capability to King Oddball’s tech, a few other bells and whistles and came up with Tennis in the Face.

We’re really happy with how it all turned out; Tennis in the Face is an awesome name, the art style and theme are great and the gameplay is just the right mix of silly, puzzle and casual. And it’s a pretty unique game overall.

I love 10tons and i love tennis too will definitely pick up the PS4 version in the next 30 mins or so…..Please please keep your games coming !!!!
