Serene exploration adventure Submerged announced for PS4

Explore a mysterious flooded city in Uppercut Games’ new title

G’day from Australia! I’m Ed Orman from Uppercut Games, and it gives me great pleasure to announce that our exploration-adventure Submerged will be coming to PS4 this year.

Submerged is a serene adventure set in a city that has mysteriously become flooded and overgrown. It follows the story of siblings Miku and Taku – the pair arrive in this strange place in a boat, and Miku has to carry her wounded brother Taku to shelter before she can start gathering the supplies she’ll need to nurse him back to health.

But to do that, she’ll have to find the supplies first! She will have to explore using her boat and telescope, locate the forgotten caches, then climb the crumbling buildings to retrieve them.

As she traverses the sunken metropolis, Miku starts to uncover the secrets of how this world came to be. And in turn, we begin to learn about Miku and Taku: what drove them to this mysterious city, where the only inhabitants appear to be malformed copies of the native sea-life?

Submerged is a game that we want players to immersive themselves in (no pun intended). We use Unreal Engine 4 to create the gorgeous graphics that you see above. We’ve enlisted BAFTA-Award Winner Jeff Van Dyck to provide the musical score. The gameplay is designed with no failure states: play at your own pace, safe in the knowledge that you’ll never die. It all adds up to create a relaxing, mysterious adventure that everyone can enjoy.

Are you planning to support project Morpheus with this game.

    Ed Orman 27 April, 2015 @ 2:36 am

We are interested in VR support, but we would want to put some real thought into designing for it – don’t want to just slap it in. That said, I’d sure love to be able to stand in the world of Submerged and have a good look around 🙂

Remembered Papo & Yo, Brothers (both amazing games) when i watched the trailer.

Thanks Sony for continuing to support all these independent titles.

Yep, those are definitely games we looked at, along with Journey, ICO and Shadow Of The Colossus – all great games!

A non-suicidal character, how novel! Looks interesting actually.

Yep, it’s a different kind of game to everything else I’ve ever worked on. It’s really nice to be able to just explore without worrying. Hope you all will think so, too!

There seems to be an awful lot of objects popping in, especially the sequence starting at 1m02s – trees on both the horizon and middle ground just appear from nowhere, the the sequence straight after has textures and plants popping in as well. Kinda ruins the who “serene” effect when your eyes are be distracted by a distant tree magically appearing.

    MaxDiehard 24 April, 2015 @ 4:18 pm

That’s due to an Unreal Engine 4 limitation. Currently it doesn’t have proper Level of Detail blending, as i’ve encountered it myself when working in it.

It’s yet to be implemented but it’s on Epic Games’ to-do list.

You’re right, and it’s something we are working on – the current version of the game already has a better system that covers up a lot of the popping (the footage in the trailer is slightly old).

Looks great but something is bothering me…

Those trees don’t have roots….

Looks like my cup of tea. Gonna keep an eye on this one, I still need to get a PS4 though. :p

My backlog indicates that I am absolutely fed up with fast-action running at or from zombies, so this will be a nice one to watch. Serenity, yeah, count me in.

was meant to be out in March 🙁 can’t wait for this game

    MaxDiehard 24 April, 2015 @ 5:59 pm

It would hardly have been out in March if it’s only just been announced until now.

    Vyper135 24 April, 2015 @ 10:52 pm

@MaxDiehard, there’s this same trailer on Youtube that was published in October 2014, so it hasn’t only just been announced. Would have been nice if they had shown a new trailer.

    Ed Orman 27 April, 2015 @ 2:39 am

We were optimistic about our initial release date estimates 🙂 We are very close to submitting the game for certification now, though – stay tuned for an actual release date.

Looks promising. Will check it out as I want to see more games from Aus/NZ.

No morpheus support please this is crappy and will not sell for one simple reason that sony seans to avoid : more than 1/3 people have no binocular vision or more than 3/10 between there eyes and when you are in this case it s impossible to use vr… if sony plan a lot and excmysive morpheus game playstation division will soufer a lot just because they have just consepted morpheus with fanboys and not make medical statment who could have automaticly stoped the project….

For this game it look nice and interesting if there is more environnements

    MaxDiehard 27 April, 2015 @ 10:02 pm

Seeing as Morpheus doesn’t release until next year, there is no need to add support yet, not until the hardware is properly finalised.

Cannot wait for this! 🙂

If Enslaved and ICO got together, this would be their beautiful baby <3
