Vehicle combat game Hardware: Rivals announced exclusively for PS4

Explosive multiplayer vehicle-on-vehicle action is inbound

Hi everyone! My name’s Dan and I’m here today to tell you about a new upcoming game – Hardware: Rivals, coming exclusively to the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 4!

As some of our veteran readers may recognise, this new title builds upon the legacy of a PlayStation 2 title, Hardware: Online Arena, a vehicle-based online combat game that was one of PlayStation’s very first online gaming experiences back in 2002.

Here at the Connected Content Group – a new internal development group at SCE – we’re all very fond of the original game (and some of the team even worked on it!). Armed with the PS4, we leapt at the chance to put a new coat of paint on an old friend.

We’ve taken the opportunity to introduce a truckload of upgrades and new features, but the spirit of the original gameplay remains the same. Bringing back the explosive mayhem and online rivalry of vehicle combat has been an absolute pleasure and we can’t wait for you to get behind the wheel. Check out our announcement trailer below to see what’s in store!

With multiple maps, game modes, challenges and special events, Hardware: Rivals lets you jump online for some frenetic vehicle-on-vehicle combat. You can go in as a lone wolf or as part of a team, and on top of our regular game modes we also have a constantly updating schedule of special events that add new twists to the game.

Fast Attack Vehicles give you agility and quick access to those tricky weapon pickups, but you can’t get complacent out in the open. Tanks are less nimble but can take a hit and bring hefty firepower and a formidable presence to the battlefield.

You’ll be able to challenge your friends and hunt down your rivals. Wear your colours proudly and unlock vehicle upgrades to tweak your ride to your own personal taste. Here on the development team we have daily debates over which vehicles and weapons are the best, and we can’t wait to hear what you think.

Keep an eye on PlayStation Blog for more information, as we’re going to be running a beta in the near future. It’ll be a great opportunity for us to get your feedback and welcome everyone back to the arena. See you there! Find out more here.

This looks like it could be really good fun. I am looking forward to seeing proper gameplay. Also, the music used in the trailer was a great touch too.

Excited for a new version of the original PSN game. I cut my teeth on online gaming with this and SOCOM. Too many hours in back in the PS2 days. Good times.

Looks like the game that Cel Damage HD couldshould have been.

Fond memories of the original on PS2 so looking forward to this…WipEout next please Sony.

Even though SCE owns the rights to WipEout and even the Psygnosis trademark. It should happen.

Sounds COOL 😉 But dare i say it(i always ask for this for most games but never get a ‘Yes’) 😀 will it have a 4 player split-screen mode to?(& you could play it on & off line in that mode to. That would be MEGA-COOL & erm be a ‘REAL’ Next-Gen Game) 😀

Oh hell Yes!! I’ve been waiting for this! Can’t wait to pick up the heavies, lasers and of course the RAILGUN.

AMAZING! I’ve spent hundreds of hours on HARDWARE: Online Arena (which was some kind of a multiplayer-sequel to DROPSHIP). I love HARDWARE: OA and I love DROPSHIP. Great job, SCE! Reviving old SCE IPs is a fantastic idea for old and new PlayStation fans.
I have a few questions:
1. Is this a F2P game? (Sadly, I’m not a big fan of F2P games)
2. New team? SCE Connected Content Group? Where is this team located? SCEE London Studios? Guerrilla Cambridge? And how many employees does this team have 🙂
3. You know this is a great idea, right? Hardware: OA was a gem of a game. Thank you for this project. But don’t forget: Another game which needs a reboot/sequel, according to A LOT OF FANS is “COLONY WARS” (even if it’s a Project Morpheus game). Just do it.

Thanks 🙂

I remember this. Also remember registering on Central Station (the PS2 “PSN”) and seeing a message telling me I would receive a copy for free, and never did.

PS2 version was brilliantly simple but addictive – sure you’ll bring that magic across to the PS4 version too!

Roll on release! 😀

If this has splitscreen online, the game will be an instant buy for me!
Looking forward to beta details, and hope to get in! Might not be the huge hit that Rocket League became, but the market might be quite similar and therefore it is there! 🙂

hardware Online was my very first online multiplayer game and was a genuinely fun and addictive game.
It’s great to see this being brought back to life for the PS4 and I can’t wait to try it.

Make this free on Plus at launch and you’ve got a guaranteed success.
