How the beta helped shape Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s multiplayer

Treyarch details gameplay changes and improvements made following the trial run

We’ve said it before but it bears repeating: thank you to all the players in the PlayStation Nation who were the first to play our Call of Duty: Black Ops III Multiplayer Beta!

Preparing for the Beta required a lot of work — basically, it was a launch-before-the-launch — but we all knew that it would be worth it because of the amount of data it would generate and the invaluable input that would get from you, our fans.

With the Beta, we talked a lot about “providing feedback to help contribute to a better Day One experience.” Today, we’re here to provide a recap of the most common pieces of gameplay feedback we received, and fill you in on some of the design changes we’ve made to address that feedback.

Here is a sampling of the gameplay changes and improvements that you can expect when Black Ops III launches on November 6th.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

  • Some players were dissatisfied that the Black Hat equipment was too powerful. We agree. Our new hacking mechanic scales the hacking speed based on how close you are to the target, and will require precise aim to hack Scorestreaks in a reasonable time. Time-to-hack has been adjusted upwards across the board to make it more challenging to hack, especially at the higher end of rewards. Hackers now also appear as a red dot on the minimap for the duration of the hack, which, along with VO notifications that a Scorestreak is being hacked, provides players the ability to counter by hunting down the attacker.
  • Rejack sparked its fair share of controversy during the Beta for a number of reasons, most of which were valid. Included in that list: putting players into Rejack did not count as a kill, and players were using Rejack to stack Scorestreaks. Now, putting a player into Rejack counts as a kill. Players receive kill credit immediately in-game, on the scoreboard and leaderboard, and in persistent stats. Rejack now also resets all Scorestreak progress so that it cannot be used continuously throughout a match to pad progress towards high-level Scorestreaks.
  • We’ve talked a lot about the flinch mechanics during the beta — that’s when getting hit causes your weapon to move out of position. Our improved networking code would sometimes cause bullet flinch to stack, so we put a cap on how much you can flinch while ADS. While you will still flinch when shot, it will be within tighter constraints to keep you closer to your aim.
  • We improved the feedback that you have downed your target by including the red “kill marker.” This marker will subtly grow in size with each subsequent hit, turning red upon dealing lethal damage as added reinforcement to confirm the kill.
  • During the beta, any downward or backward player movement could make the grenade toss distances feel awkwardly short. This has been adjusted so that player velocity never negatively impacts grenade trajectory. We also tweaked grenade speed and distances.
  • Players felt Concussion and Flashbang grenade types were very powerful. While both grenade types need to be in order to stay viable as equipment choices, we reduced the Concussion grenade stun time by 1 second and are now unlocking the Tactical Mask perk (the counter for both Concussion and Flash Bangs) earlier in the progression system at level 13.
  • By popular request, we’ve added a “Time in Hill” stat for the scoreboard and leaderboards in the Hardpoint game mode.
  • Players did not feel sufficiently rewarded for escorting the robot in Safeguard. Players now receive +25 score for every 3 seconds that they escort the robot toward the enemy base.
  • Players wanted additional details about how they were eliminated. The Kill Cam and Final Kill Cam now show what killed you (including weapons, Scorestreaks, Specialist weapons, equipment, etc.) and what perks the player has equipped.
  • Additionally, various weapon-balancing changes were implemented, including to the Razorback and M8A7.

Again, thank you for all of the input and for bringing these and a number of other issues to our attention. Your contributions will most definitely provide a better Day One experience for everyone.

Finally, during the Beta we announced that anyone that played would receive an exclusive PS4 dynamic theme free as a “thank you” from the studio. Keep an eye on your email and your system messages on PS4 over the next week for more details on how to redeem your dynamic theme.

Thank you and we’ll see you on November 6th!

I improved Black ops 3 by deleting the beta shortly after i began it.

1.1

LOL same here. awful game. it seems they have improved everything except one thing that actually matters. thats the outdated gameplay. i’m never buying another COD ever again.

1.2

so sad for you, the game is a lot of fun.

Outdated gameplay? I think it’s the most revolutionary since Blops2. The movement system is perfect now, AW was way too over the top and impractical, but Blops3 has perfected it, especially the wallrunning. The worst thing however is the ridiculously short time to kill, it should take more sustained fire to kill, like Battlefield.

Since I improved it, can I get it for free? :P

Wait so forgetting that something exists means I made it better? Sweet!!!!! Assassins Creed VII should be amazing since I can’t even remember the subtitle of this year’s one lol.

I think this is Call of Dutys last year. There’s no way it could withstand the night of the actually pretty good star wars battlefront

4.1

Star wars & Call of duty is different js, Yes star wars is fun to play but you have to be fan of starwars to really care about this game, For me and most my mates buying cod over star wars cuz not fan of the movies, This won’t be the last year of cod btw people from bo2 are coming back like myself which is great, But both going to fun games in there own way & bit community behind them :)

I disagree im no star wars fan but love battlefront easily out does the same old crap of call of duty.defo buying star wars over this crap

Hhhhhh

The only way forward for Call of Duty is to remaster MW 1 & 2.

I really like this updates, Glad they listened to the community cuz i really enjoyed the beta, It was these things defo the grenade stun when u hit that you could run around the player 5 times before he got his eyes back lol & the jumps is 10x better then AW, When playing this it felt like bo2 just that bit faster. Just hope when it comes out it is still fun as bo2 still is today!

I try every CoD (not buy, mind, buy at my friend’s or my brother’s copy) and always find treyarch does it best and have immensely enjoyed the beta. It really felt like you guys were after data and improvements as opposed to the beta just being a marketing ploy. To see what changes were inspired by the beta is great and they all sound like good ones.

I will say I did not enjoy the snow map from the beta. I like more treyarch’s three lane design and with sensible amount of line of sights and angles to cover. The snow map had too much going on I’ve felt. Reason I like treyarch best is it’s tough but fair philosophy and building multiplayer that can be played well by using well your head, not just the sticks. I think that’s the key reason black ops is most played – people like games they can learn, understand and get better at with some logic or flow, not 100% madness with 20 entries into every area and people jet packing in all sorts of directions. That makes it just chaos. Where as t...

Anyway enough from me. After beta I got my pre order in since I’ve played the beta almost everyday and multiple formats and couldn’t get enough. Wish you guys best of luck at launch and I hope you keep giving me a great CoD to play every 3 years :)

I’m sure it will sell lots of copies but for me this is the first cod I wont be buying, I’ve owned them all (apart from cod 2) and played each one less than than its predecessor before I got bored, it just feels like a new coat of paint for the same tired old game to me and I’m just done with it, I had fun while it lasted tho :)

I think you overdid it with the Rejack nerfs. If it doesn’t carry the scorestreak, then what is it good for? It’s just a poor-man’s tactical insertion now. That might help on very specific objective game modes, but otherwise, there’s no reason to pick that specialist ability anymore.
