Check out the new Severed trailer, from the team behind Guacamelee!

Drinkbox Studios shows off its upcoming PS Vita adventure

Hi PlayStation Blog! How are you today? Graham from Drinkbox Studios here. You might remember us from such games as Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!, or Guacamelee!. We’re the studio that loves using punctuation in our game titles.

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted anything about our upcoming PS Vita game Severed. We’ve had our heads down working hard finishing up development, and we’ve just put together a brand new trailer that we’re excited to share with you all. Check it out!

In Severed you play as a one-armed warrior named Sasha, who wakes up in a surreal new world after a catastrophic event. After obtaining a living sword from a mysterious cloaked creature, Sasha sets off on an epic journey in search of her missing family.

Sasha, ready for battle

Combat in Severed is done primarily using the touchscreen. HOLD UP! Before you start rolling your eyes at the word “touchscreen” with thoughts of Fruit Ninja rolling through your head, please let me explain in more detail. Severed is definitely not a casual game. In fact, we think that using the touchscreen for sword combat has allowed us to make the game a much more deep and complex experience than button-based sword fighting ever could have been.

Each monster in Severed requires a different strategy to deal with, and once you’ve figured out how to deal with a single enemy you’ll quickly be presented with multiple enemies of different types at once.

Hey monsters! Can’t we all just be friends?

Sasha has a “focus meter” that increases by fighting enemies efficiently. Once full, the focus meter grants the ability to enter “sever mode” where you can throw enemies into the air and sever off their vulnerable limbs. These enemy pieces are used to upgrade Sasha’s abilities, a necessary requirement to be effective against increasingly difficult enemy combinations later in the game.

Daddy Long Legs? More like Daddy Short Arms.

As you progress through the game’s dungeons, you’ll encounter more powerful Boss monsters that each have unique abilities. Severing these bosses will leave behind a carcass which Sasha can wear to gain the ability of that boss. While the gameplay of Severed is in 1st person, you can keep track of how your character looks by checking the game’s upgrade screen, or via mirrors you’ll find throughout the world.

Before & after: Sasha is starting to look pretty bad-ass!

But wait! There’s more to the game than just combat! Severed takes place in a large open world filled with secrets to uncover. Each dungeon will present you with new puzzle mechanics that will be required to solve impassable barriers. Over the course of the game you’ll also find yourself re-exploring old sections of the world, using newly acquired powers to open pathways to hidden surprises, challenges, and rewards.

So many birds, and me without a hat!

Feels like we’ve been waiting for this forever! It still looks ace. More so even. When’s it coming out?!

It’s coming out SOON! We’re working on playtesting / balancing / final polish now, but the game is feature complete. Keep your eyes open for it early next year.

Can. Not. Wait.

Sasha looks so badass with all that armour.

Honestly the only thing I care to learn about Severed, is the release date!
I loved your previous work and can’t wait for this one too.

Day 1 hope we find out the release date at PSX!

No platforming in this one. We promise!

Music in Severed is by an amazing band called YT//ST. Check them out!

For some reason I was expecting Severed to be Q3 2016, this is great news and the game looks amazing :)

Yes! This looks absolutely beautiful and the music lands itself really well in the trailer.
Really looking forward to it :)
BTW how soon is “soon”? I want this yesterday :)

Before the public gets their hands on the game, we really want to make sure the experience is as smooth as possible, and all the rough spots are ironed out. This takes a lot of playtesting, which is what we’re doing right now. In fact, I’m watching a playtest right now on my 2nd monitor!

It’s hard to say exactly how long this will take, but we’ve been doing this for a few weeks now and it feels like it’s getting pretty close!

Nice to hear :)
I’ll be here straight away. Good luck

i loved guacemellee so i’m disappointed this isn’t on PS4. in fact please make a guacemellee 2 for PS4 as the first one is one of my favorite games ever as it was full of charm, charisma and pure fun gameplay.

Can’t wait

Love the graphics

2 why cant i pré order this?
3 any chance se get a physical edition?

1) Great!
2) I don’t know! We probably should have thought of that
3) Not currently planned, sorry. We do talk about this from time to time though, so also not impossible!

Oh my gosh, I just cannot tell you how hyped I am for this game.

After the utterly fabulous Guacamelee! (which I’ve bought – and beat – on three separate platforms), Severed has been right up there with No Man’s Sky as one of my most anticipated games. Yep, it looks ‘that’ good.

Roll on 2016 I say :0)

How precise will the touch input need to be?
Because golden abyss touch screen boss fight really [DELETED] me off and in crazy market the response of the screen wasnt good enough when the gameplay got really fast.

I hope this game will be challenging because of the gameplay, not control issues.

Precision is pretty important, but we’re also generous with the amount of space and time we give the player when fighting a single enemy. The difficulty comes more from multi-enemy battles, where you have to quickly switch between defensive and offensive to take down enemies as they surround you.

Thanks for the reply, thats good to hear.

Also, have the trophies been finalised? Will there be a platinum?

I’m wondering about the price. I hope that it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Okay, I’m getting my coat.

Looks awesome. Too bad i’ll probably never buy a Vita.

If this is only half as good as Guacamelee then it will be exceptional.

Had wondered what was going on with Severed after all went quiet for a while… Now I know! Going on Drinkbox’s track record, this’ll look, sound and play great (although that Tule Tree orb still gives me nightmares).

THANK YOU for the Vita support, I’ll have some Sasha slasha action on day one!

Iv’e been really really excited for this, any chance of a ps4 port using the touchpad?
Also please please PLEASE don’t fill the game full of dumb memes, it absolutely ruined guacamelee for me :'(

Touchpad input for PS4 has been discussed, but we still need to do some experiments to see if it is actually feasible. It might require a lot of re-design of the game as right now it’s pretty important for you to be able see what you are hitting / tapping under your finger.

ORLY, you hate memes? NO MEMES in Severed, we promise. We’re saving all of those for if/when we do a Guacamelee sequel.

May not be possible, but I just want to leave the fact that I would totally buy a physical copy for this.

I’m glad you guys are still supporting Vita. I hope this comes to PS4 as well.

We close the comments for posts after 30 days.
