Psychological thriller Asemblance announced for PS4, from Destiny alumnus

A new single player adventure inspired by The X-Files and Black Mirror

You wake to find yourself trapped inside an experimental machine.
A machine built to simulate memories.
You have no idea how you got here…
But to break the cycle, you must look into a past that you may not want to remember.

Hi everyone. My name is Niles and I’m the creative director at Nilo Studios. We’re excited to announce Asemblance, a single-player, first-person psychological thriller for PS4. It’s the first episode of an expansive franchise inspired by The Twilight Zone, The X-Files and the Black Mirror television series. These series show a unique ability to pull the viewer into a narrative that isn’t always logical and keeps you engaged by asking what is really true.

We’ve also found inspiration in games like P.T. and The Stanley Parable – experiences that allow players to explore different theories and ultimately engage one another to learn the truth. We were inspired by this approach to create a narrative where you’re never quite sure what’s real or what’s not. We hope we’ve accomplished that in Asemblance.

We’re just about done with development and are currently optimising the game, polishing the audio design, and adding the final touches to the game’s multi-layered narrative.

Nilo was founded in Seattle, Washington just last year, so we’re a relatively new studio. That said, the developers here have years of experience making games, writing books, and producing music in the Seattle area. I was a designer at Bungie for almost ten years before founding Nilo. While I’m proud of the work I’ve done on bigger games like Halo and Destiny, it’s incredibly exciting to start something new where we can experiment more with narrative game design.

Thanks for reading. We can’t wait to see what you think of Asemblance. Keep an eye out for more updates and feel free to post questions in the comment section below.

“It’s the first episode of an expansive franchise inspired by The Twilight Zone, The X-Files and the Black Mirror television series.”

Does that mean this is going to be like Hitman? No physical disc until a complete season or however many episodes are released?

Well, I’m very interested to see more of this. However, aren’t you a tad worried that people might see this as a SOMA clone? Personally, this would only highten my interest the game though.

I simply don’t get the “if it’s not on a disc it’s not a real game” attitude these days. Besides, if it’s episodic, then of course it won’t receive a possible disc release until every episode has been released.

This sounds really interesting, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it!

Why has alot of games nowadays been going the episode route?I liked it with The Walking Dead games because it was different but it just gets frustrating now having to wait months for the next episode!

But despite my moaning I think this looks very interesting and will defiantly be keeping an eye on it :)

Because game development, especially for small developers, is extremely expensive. The money you get from releasing episode 1 might be vital for getting episode 2 made. Additionally you can judge interest in your game and make subsequent improvements in later episodes based on feedback from the previous ones, all things you can’t do if you release it all at once. There’s story considerations too, but mostly it’s about funding.

i’m interested but too little info to get my wallet just yet ;)

Had a sort of ‘Moon’ vibe at the start of the video with the GERTY-like voice and piano music. I’m a big fan of Black Mirror and existential sci-fi in general so this looks very promising.

Exactly what we need! No reason to worry about episodic drip feed yet guys. ALIEN was the first episode in an expansive franchise cope example. As for the TV series they mention, I think they’re talking about stylistic content, not how it’s delivered. This to me looks amazing!

*for example haha.

First person again. :(

Far too many horror games going FPV mode these days.

Sounds super exciting! I love Black Mirror, X-Files, PT and Twilight Zone, so this is very interesting. If it’s nearly complete, do we have a release date?
