Meet real life Nathan Drakes in our ‘Conquer the Uncharted’ video series

First up, climber Leo Houlding is the first to scale Jordan’s ‘Pillar of Wisdom’

To celebrate the launch of Uncharted 4 last week (if you haven’t got your copy yet, what are you waiting for?), we tasked ourselves with finding some of the real-life Nathan Drakes of the world; the type of adventurers who would put anything at stake – even their life – in order to achieve something amazing. Like this, for instance…

In ‘Conquer the Uncharted’, we will follow a few of these fearless individuals as they take inspiration from Drake himself to dive into truly uncharted territory. The first of these was British climber Leo Houlding, who has now become the first person to solo climb Jordan’s iconic 350 metre-high Pillar of Wisdom. To put that in perspective, the giant sandstone structure is even taller than the Eiffel Tower!

Rather than blab on, why not watch how Leo got on in the heart-stopping video clip below? I’m sure you’ll agree that Drake would be proud!

If you enjoyed that, keep an eye on our Conquer the Uncharted page for more amazing adventures.

Would be cool if once he completed it a little ding was heard and a trophy appeared.
It’s guys like this that make me think I’m wasting my time playing video games and should be out there experiencing stuff like this for real. :)

Wow! Stuff that! Would not have the balls I am afraid!

Thanks for this, it was an interesting video. I’ve been to Wadi Rum in Jordan, and feeling those unforgiving sands under my feet really made me love Uncharted 3’s desert scene more than I can describe. I rank is as one of the top desert scenes in fiction along with Lawrence of Arabia.

I’ve never done free climbing but maybe one day. If it were me I think I would look forward to jumping off the top with a parachute haha. I must say though I appreciated the honesty of the video, moments where Leo Houlding mutters some expression of fear are I think what makes him human. Even Drake takes a deep breath when yet another handhold collapses, this is what makes the guy who laughs off death still relate-able.

“…I’m happy that you think we’re gonna win the day.
But I think a little fear can be a healthy thing.
It helps you determine which risks are worth taking.”

Kinda silly. Nathan Drake can jump with his *arms* higher than most can with their legs up the front of mountain. There is no real-life Nathan Drake. There’s nothing even remotely close to his fictional style of free climbing.
