’90s-style JRPG I Am Setsuna launches today on PS4

Tokyo RPG Factory aims to rekindle the magic of the 90’s best-loved adventure games on PS4

Hello everyone. This is Kumagai from Tokyo RPG Factory. I am the director of the English versions of I am Setsuna. I am extremely honoured to have the opportunity to talk about the game on its release.

I am Setsuna is the very first game to come out of “Project Setsuna”, which was started with the idea of using current technology to replicate the engrossing JRPGs from the ’90s – the golden age of the genre. The concept we sought to express through the game’s story is setsunai, an emotion unique to the Japanese language.

The game tells the story of a young woman by the name of Setsuna, who decides to become a sacrifice to restore the peaceful lives of the people, and her subsequent journey through the bitter snow. When her journey towards her own death comes to an end, what the player feels is the setsunai emotion that we wanted to convey.

The game has a unique battle system and customisable elements. The battle system is based on Active Time Battle, but has its own twist. Weapons and items can be customised for upgrades, and by combining with other equipment, the player can take advantage of different skills and effects in battle.

The music in the game is composed mainly on the piano, adding another layer of depth to the game’s world.

The main story can be completed in 20 to 30 hours. You can, of course, keep grinding after completion, but before that, I hope you reach the end of the story and experience the emotion of setsunai.

Hello there,

Just a quick question because i am confused when i was trying to buy the game. It was stated within the playstation store as Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna (Japanese Ver.) instead of I Am Setsuna.

So is the game going to be in English with Japanese voice overs? I don’t want to end up buying it in Japanese and not know what i am reading.

Appreciate it if you could help me on this!

Hi Morgan_Chua. The game fully supports dual Audio so you can pick English or Japanese Voice overs :)

:-( please release on Vita

Would love it if this came to Vita – instant purchase.

Agree completely about a Vita release, that would be an instant buy. As PS4 only I’ll wait for a sale.

Why this wonderful game doesn’t have a Japanese-like physical edition and a Vita version? As always the western audience get the leftovers and should be grateful.

90’s style JRPG caught my attention. Glad it did because this looks gorgeous. Instant must-have by the looks of it.

Oh nevermind. I love the artwork and thought the game was beautifully handdrawn like that :).. Not a big fan of that character style with bigger heads than their bodies either :p

Mister Kumagai, the blog post has spelled your name wrongly! It says it’s by “Usuke Kamagai”!

(Also I’d rather play it on Vita as well. Such a lovely console for RPG gaming!)

No Vita No Thank You!

gaah, I played for a few hours and loved it but I need to finish Star Ocean V first ^^

Anyway, Kumagai-san, thanks for bringing it over. If possibility ever raises please consider a physical LE…or at least an artbook <3
