Check out upcoming PS4 sci-fi action RPG The Surge

Deck 13 shows off how combat works in its sprawling new adventure

Hi readers! Jan Klose here, Creative Director at Deck 13, currently working away on our new game The Surge, a visceral sci-fi action RPG with a few original mechanical twists. Today we’re demonstrating the combat mechanics and crafting integral to the core gameplay experience.

Fitted with an advanced CREO exo-suit, balancing your core power against your implants and exo-suit upgrades will allow you to specialise in a huge variety of combat styles, thanks to the almost limitless combinations of exo-suit add-ons and dozens of make-shift weapons salvaged from the industrial complex at CREO. Finely tune your gear to match your playstyle, and to best suit the challenge ahead.

What’s more, the Metroidvania-style levels open up as your core power increases, allowing you to over-charge doors previously too strong for your suit to damage, opening new pathways to explore. The CREO facility is vast, and if you want to find and craft the best equipment and weapons, you will need to explore every area for secrets and hidden items.

THe Surger

The Surge features innovative combat mechanics, allowing you to target individual limbs, dismembering the exo-suit addon, or weapon, that you want to acquire. Collecting tech-scrap and blueprints, you will be able to return to the Operation Center to level up and craft new exo-suit addons and weapons salvaged throughout the level. These can even be acquired from the world’s gigantic, industrial bosses.

Most of what you encounter in The Surge was never designed to kill you, and most of the items you loot and craft were never designed for combat, but the combined strength of the exo-suit and near-future technology of CREO turn anything from fork-lifting addons to laser cutters into lethal weapons and armors suitable for diving deeper into the CREO complex.

THe Surger

We can’t wait to see what you think of The Surge when it releases in 2017 for the PlayStation 4. Head over to our website for more information: www.thesurge-game.com.

Looks like dark souls meets Sci-Fi from some of the combat animations. Will follow the release.

The enemy AI didnt look the strongest, lots of spamming attacks. Will look for this to improve before release :)

So far the game looks extremely cool. Looking forward to it.

Seriously? Seriously? You chopped the head of, took the helmet but you never vacated the helmet so now you have a severed head in a helmet.

That’s just wrong.

the game looks good (I hope its not to much like dark souls) but…is this video form a ps4? the icons when he fights show ps4 buttons but when he enders the selter and starts crafting, its says A, B, X ,Y like a xbox/pc, why is that?

I have to be honest: Sorry devs, but this game looks like a re-skinned version of Lords of the Fallen. Same moves, combat, health & stamina system + when the enemy attacks. If you want to make a good game you should consider what the “fans” says, or what they want. If this game doesn’t improves, you’ll fall from a lot of costumers. I’m a fan of Lord of the Fallen, please improve something.

I don’t think it’s the sparks and cool gear that makes anything Sci-Fi. It’s the narrative.
