The PlayStation weekly wrap-up

Your regular run-down of everything that’s been happening this week

It’s that time of year; the hazy days of summer a ticking past, you realise you’ve barely been outside thanks to No Man’s Sky, and the gaming world’s attention turns to the fair city of Cologne, where Gamescom is in full swing once again. It’s been a bumper week, so sit back for the weekly run-down of what’s happening in PlayStation world…

This week’s biggest trailers

  1. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided launch trailer
Adam Jensen is on his way to PS4 next week; assuming you’re not a member of the Illuminati, this is definitely something to be excited for. Check out the launch trailer and see Adam and his various augmentations dish out some rough justice.
  2. The Surge Gamescom 2016 trailer
Coming next year from the team behind the excellent, underrated Lords of the Fallen, The Surge straps in to a powerful mech suit that can be modified and fine-tuned to become a devastating wrecking machine. See how combat works in this trailer fresh from Gamescom.
  3. Watch_Dogs 2 multiplayer trailer
Back in the early days of PS4, Watch_Dogs gave a glimpse of the incredible possibilities of new-gen gaming. As its sequel draws closer, this first look at the gameplay you’ll experience as a Dedsec member shows just as much super-connected potential.

Tweets of the week

Around the world of PlayStation

  • Even robotic sentry killing machines need some time to get back to nature and enjoy the fresh air, and Overwatch‘s Bastion is no different. Woe betide anyone who shatters his peace and quiet – just check out this short film “The Last Bastion” for proof.

  • Gaming is a wide and varied world, so it’s not all smashy-crashy-explodey violence all the time, no matter what your mum might think. Business Insider has put together this list of some of the best non-violent games, featuring Firewatch, Abzu and more.
  • Our pals at PlayStation Access got eyes-on with Driveclub VR, which was announced this week as coming this year for PlayStation VR. It looks STUNNING, as you’ll see in this gameplay video.

This week’s PlayStation Store ‘leftfield’ pick:

Continuing this summer’s trend for planetary exploration, Lifeless Planet has touched down on PS4 this week, bringing an eery atmosphere of mystery along with it. You play a pioneering astronaut seeking life on a distant world, separated from your crew and roaming a barren wasteland… until you stumble upon evidence of previous human habitation.

The pick of PlayStation Blog:

  • Get a sneak peek at the upcoming PS4 4.0 update
Some of you may already be taking part in the beta trial for the next big PS4 update – but for the rest of us, here’s a look at some of the features heading our way. Folders to sort your games, quick menus to keep you in play and a whole heap of new ways to personalise your home screen and profile are all coming soon…
  • Driveclub VR announced for PlayStation VR
The stunning locations that set Driveclub apart from every other racing game are coming to PlayStation VR later this year. It’s going to be tough keeping eyes on the road with this kind of detail completely surrounding you – and you don’t want to prang any of the exotic supercars you’ll find in your garage…
  • Repair a broken world through dance in Bound, out now on PS4
Emotive storytelling, graceful movement and vibrant locations; Bound on PS4 truly is something special. Full details on this intriguing game are all here, along with a launch trailer and a couple of gifs to give you a taste of Bound’s unique gameplay.
  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare ‘Zombies in Spaceland’ revealed
Call of Duty’s Zombies modes are always intense fun – but this looks completely insane. An 80s theme, a neon amusement park, zombies everywhere… and David Hasslehoff DJing. What more could you ask for?
  • One last thing in case you missed it; as so many of you have pointed out, one of this month’s PS3 games included in PlayStation Plus – Retro/Grade – had already been featured in PS Plus in 2012. Thanks for your patience while we addressed this error – an additional PS3 title, Tom Clancy’s EndWar, is available to download now.

The rest of the headlines:

What we’re currently playing:

Fred: “It’s not been easy to claim ownership of the TV this week given sporting events over in Rio, but I managed to squeeze in 30 minutes of Abzu. I need to *cough* dive a bit deeper *cough* but at first glance it’s bewitching stuff”

Rhys: “I’m living a Han Solo-esque smuggler’s life in No Man’s Sky; I’ve found a planet full of Gravatino Balls, but the Sentinels REALLY don’t like it when I take them. Cue lots of shoot outs, breathless escapes and running the gauntlet of space pirates as I try to get my cargo back to the nearest space station. Loving it.”

Matt: “I’ve spent most of the week fooling around on Rebel Galaxy and honestly loving every minute. I need to start clearing some backlog though, so this weekend it’ll be Divinity: Original Sin.”
