Rocket League was the best-selling PlayStation Store game of 2016

While Ark: Survival Evolved topped PS4 chart in December

We’ve a PlayStation Store chart double bill this month, detailing the bestsellers from December as well as the reveal of the best-selling games of 2016.

Let’s take the latter first. Topping the biggest selling PlayStation Store games (across all formats) in 2016 is futuristic sports-action title Rocket League. It outperformed both FIFA 17 (in second place) and the franchise tag team of Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 1, holding third and fourth place respectively.

As for December’s PlayStation Store chart, Ark: Survival Evolved beat out other holiday heavy hitters to debut at the chart’s top spot. Elsewhere PlayStation VR Worlds topped the PS VR chart for the same month, while Final Fantasy XV’s season pass took first place on the DLC chart.

Well its a solid game. Shame they don’t want to support the PS4 PRO so the game (and Studio) is kinda bumming me out atm.

    MaxDiehard 7 January, 2017 @ 9:10 pm

That’s because they’re not buying into the stupidity of it. If you bought the Pro, you’re a sheep following the flock over a meat grinder.

It’s impressive how the developer have managed to grow the Rocket League brand since the game launched on PS+ in 2015.

Yeah fair play to them. It’s a great game and an ideal one for new PS4 owners who want to grab something cheap, quick to start up and get into, easy to play and enjoy with friends. 🙂

It’s easy to play and get into for beginners and complex and challenging for those who want to play it competitively and take it to the next level. That’s why it’s such a good game.

Couch Co op did it for me and my mates. Taking a pad and a few beers round to one of the lad’s houses for a good solid night of four player split screen. Golden.
The n64 came out a couple of times for some golden eye action too but my God we’ve been spoilt. The controls are just awful.

When is Kingdom Hearts 2.8 going to be able to be pre-ordered on the UK PS store?

The game is out in 18 days and it’s still missing from the store. Every other region has it.

    KaneTheGoth 6 January, 2017 @ 7:35 pm

It was up, briefly, then taken down. A few weeks ago now.

I don’t think the Kingdom Hearts will ever appear on the PS Store because… Disney. ¬_¬

    @supersmith2500

KH 2.8 is up for pre-order in every other PS region apart from the UK.

Well I’m not adding to the PS Vita sales, as my 64 GB memory card became corrupt and I can’t afford the exorbitant price to replace it. Sony shot themselves in the foot with their memory cards.

64GB cards are still Japan only, right? As far as I know, they have chance to corrupt on western Vitas as it seems they doesn’t properly support it, which is why I have stayed with supported sizes. There’s been talk about this since it released, and it should be wider known risk.

Same happened to me, imported one from Japan and was happy to get started gaming, one year later the Memory Card got corrupted, was pretty bummed about it since I had to go back to 16GB. Its kind of lame though, 64GB has always been just enough for portable gaming for me, 32GB just makes it a bit more lackluster and I have to delete and redownload games more often than it should be necessary.

Why aren’t any of the old final fantasy games avaible in romania? kinda sucks…can’t find them anywere to buy…i know they are on steam…but i want them for PS2/3/4

Are the Rocket League numbers propped up by PS Plus? I know it’s popular but I want impressed with it tbh.

    mrobinson91 7 January, 2017 @ 12:00 am

Rocket League was offered on PS Plus in 2015. Meaning that them getting the best selling game on the PS store in 2016 is an incredible achievement for them!

@mrobinson91 it also acts as a great proof of concept for the whole PS Plus game of the month ecosystem – lets hope more small publishers use it as a root to market for their games – don’t spend a fortune on advertising, put it in the hands of gamers and let word of mouth do the rest – of course it only works if you game is any good… Well done to the team behind Rocket League!

Even though I’m a huge fan of BUNGiE and Destiny, Rise of Iron shouldn’t be in the biggest game sellers list (because its a dlc, admittedly a very good one).

Also the list proves how weak Sony’s exclusives have been in 2016, only Uncharted 4 made the top 10 and Rachet and Clank narrowly got in (oddly behind a few EA games that released in 2015).

Why would Ark get second rate post to a football car game? Strange, Ark should have its own page to celebrate its achievement. Well done Ark developers. My favourite game of 2016.

Harrisown 7 January, 2017 @ 4:55 pm   9

Well deserved number 1.
It will always be the best ps+ game ever. Dare I say it would not have been the success it is now without plus. That was never a bad decision on their part.
I still play it everyday but still haven’t put a single bit of money into it.

I’m wondering if the PS2 on PS4 classics are counted as PS4 games or classics…if anyone could answer.

TheLordPegasus 9 January, 2017 @ 4:45 am   11

Rightly so. I bought the game myself since I wasn’t around when it was offered through Plus. Don’t regret that one bit. I do hope they sort out their trading nonsense soon. It’s ruining the gameplay.

Rocket League is one of those very very special games that you will remember for the rest of your life. For me it is anyway.
