Killer Instinct veterans return with old-school brawler Raging Justice, battling onto PS4 later this year

See the action-packed trailer for MakinGames upcoming homage to arcade classics of yesteryear

Hey guys, Anna here! One half of the husband & wife duo that is MakinGames. We’re a small team currently developing the savage side-scrolling beat ’em up, Raging Justice, a game we’re very excited to announce, with the help of Team17, will be launching on PlayStation this year!

One evening when reminiscing about the good old days we began to wonder, why aren’t there any new side-scrolling beat ’em up games. Our youth had been spent in the arcades enthralled by the CRT glow of arcade brawlers, as for us they were the ultimate genre of the early ’90s. Instead of waiting we decided to take matters into our own hands!

Just paying homage to greats of that golden age wasn’t enough though, we had to find a way to drag the genre kicking and screaming into the 21st century. This gave Jay, the talent behind our art, the challenge of pushing the HD graphics as far as he could, whilst keeping the game 2D and retaining the distinct feel that is true to genre and so important to Raging Justice.

Raging Justice

As our team is comprised of Rare studio veterans, it made sense to look to the techniques seen in classics such as Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. By creating pre-rendered sprites from 3D computer generated models, Jay was able to give Raging Justice a distinct style that both feels modern and nostalgic, yet plays like an old school brawler.

Jay wasn’t the only one doing the heavy lifting though! In addition to giving the game a nineties retro vibe and awesome grungy 8bit in game sounds, Steve (the maestro behind Raging Justice’s music), voiced an incredible variety of characters!

From gravelly beefcakes to sassy teens, Steve had his work cut out for him. On more than one occasion when recording, he even lost his voice and terrified his neighbours! He used an insane variety of instruments and techniques, to give every punch, kick and throw a real meaty thud- putting you in the heart of the action!

Inspired by the greats, we wanted to bring something new and exciting to the genre we adored. Nic, the other half of MakinGames, has made sure Raging Justice is packed full of level challenges, a new arrest mechanic, alternate endings and an insane variety of weapons, to give Raging Justice an extra level of depth!

Follow us on @MakinGames on Twitter or MakinGames on Facebook, I promise we have so much more exciting news and we want you to be part of our journey!

I just want Super Double Dragon. Best brawler ever.

Never been a fan of pre-rendered 3D (and wasn’t a huge fan of DKC or KI on SNES, preferring Yoshi’s Island and Street Fighter 2) but I do like a good brawler and I’ve been really missing Double Dragon Neon I used to play on PS3 a lot (mainly helped by the fun 80s feel and humour and excellent music) so I may give it a go.

You should try Mother Russia Bleeds. It’s discounted right now.

Hm, graphics look a bit rough (maybe i been spoiled by the quality pixel art of modern games like The Mummy Demastered and the recent Iconoclasts) but eh it’s cheap in the sale so I might give it a go later on when I get home.

Nice to see another brawler! Will try.

take my money

I’ll definitely be picking this up

This looks so chep. Why devs don’t put more frames in animations???

I’m excited for this! We need more brawlers and hopefully this one will have online co-op.
