PS4 System Software 5.50 beta out today, key features revealed

Custom Wallpaper via USB, Play Time Management, library enhancements and more are coming to PS4

The beta for the PlayStation 4 systems next major system software update 5.50 (codenamed KEIJI) starts today. If you signed up and were selected for the beta program, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Whether you’re taking part in the beta programme or not, we wanted to give you a first look at some of the features you can expect in this update. In 5.50, we’re introducing Play Time Management, Library plus Quick Menu updates and much more.

Play Time Management

In system software update 5.00 we introduced a range of parental control enhancements. These allowed assigned Family Managers to easily control what each individual child plays, watches and views online.

Play Time Management builds on this, giving Family Managers (and adult family members who are set as guardian), the ability to set limits on when and for how long each individual child can play for. Managing Playtime is easy; go to Settings > Family Management on your PS4, or sign in to PlayStation Network account as a family manager or guardian on your web browser from your PC or smartphone, to check and manage your child’s playtime each day.

TITLE

Notifications will be sent to children during gameplay so that they know when they should save and quit. The family managers/guardians can also set the PS4 to log out once the playtime session is over, and increase or decrease game time on the go, via the web portal.

TITLE

Import custom wallpapers via USB

By popular demand, you can now import your own images via USB stick to use as custom wallpapers on PS4. Once imported, you can even zoom, crop and preview them in-situ to help get the perfect look on your dashboard. Note that the picture files on a USB stick need to be located in a folder named “IMAGES” for the PS4 to recognize them. Just go to Settings > Themes > Select Theme > Custom > Select Image > USB Storage Device.

Following the 5.50 update, you’ll also be able to customize your Tournaments team page with your own team logo or background that you can import from a USB stick. To set your logo and background, head over to Events > Teams > select your team > Edit Team Profile.

Library UI improvements

  • ‘This PS4’ and Name/Avatar tab

TITLE

Two new tabs are being added to Library to make it easier for you to see which apps you’ve installed and purchased. The ‘This PS4’ tab lists all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system, and the tab with your name/avatar lists all the apps that you purchased with your PSN ID. This feature also makes it easy to search and find games you’ve already purchased but have not yet installed.

  • PS Plus tab

TITLE

This update also adds a new PS Plus tab to the Library, which clarifies what games you own from PS Plus’ Monthly Free Games. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe.

  • Hide apps

TITLE

As requested, we’re adding a function that will allow you to hide certain applications under the ‘Purchased’ tab in the Library. In ‘Options,’ you can hide content including betas, trials or demos of games that you may not be going back to.

Quick Menu enhancements

With the launch of 5.50, you’ll be able to access custom friends’ lists directly from the Quick Menu. This will make it easier to see who’s online, and then send them messages or invitations – especially when you’re in the middle of game.

TITLE

Whenever you’re listening to music on PS4, you’ll be able to access certain shortcuts from the Quick Menu. If you’re using Spotify on PlayStation Music, the ‘square’ button will serve as the shortcut for volume control. And when you’re on the Media Player or the USB Music Player, ‘triangle’ will work as the shortcut for play or pause, and the ‘square’ button as the volume control.

Notifications update

Users will be able to permanently remove old notifications from their PS4 – for better organisation and management. Just go to Notifications and press the ‘triangle’ or “OPTIONS” button to open up a menu that will allow you to select a single or multiple notifications you’d like to delete.

TITLE

Background music on PlayStation Now

With Background Music on PS Now, you’ll be able to listen to your favorite tracks while streaming a game on PS Now. Just be aware, similar to when playing a game on disc or via digital download on PS4, background music may not always be available.

Supersampling mode on PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro users taking part in the beta will see a new ‘supersampling mode’ under Settings, which enables those with HDTVs (i.e., 1080p or less) to enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games.

With supersampling mode, some games will render at a higher resolution and then be downscaled to match the HDTV – allowing PS4 Pro owners to leverage the benefits of an image clarity boost even if their PS4 Pro is not connected to a 4K TV. Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro.

TITLE

Let us know which features you’re most excited about, and remember it’s not too late to join the beta. You can still sign up here for a chance to participate.

Stay tuned for further details about more features and improvements are coming with system software update 5.50.

Supersampling is dope!

Where do I go to turn on supersampling

thaBoOtyologist 08 February, 2018 @ 17:13
1.2

Head to ‘Settings’ then to ‘Video Output Settings’

looking forward to try supersampling

Would also be nice if they could improve the Pro “Boost Mode” to checkerboard 1080p games to 1440p or run a dynamic resolution of sorts, to match the games FPS lock or something. I’d love to see games that don’t have Pro support (like Driveclub) in higher fidelity

Or at least better Anisotropic Filtering for textures in unpatched games.

2.3

Checkerboard rendering is not an upscale, you can’t go from resolution X to resolution Y, a game just targets resolution Y by rendering half of the pixels and some nifty stuff (can explain more if you want). It has to be implemented at the rendering stage of the game itself. Since Boost mode is for games that do not support the Pro and non-Pro games do not use checkerboard rendering this is obviously a no-go.

A game that is using a fixed resolution in it’s code can’t be patched on the fly to use dynamic resolution, so also this is a no-go…

Misleading title?

Yeah, I think they changed it now and added “beta”.

Year 2018, Version 5.50, 5th year of PS4 lifecycle and nothing similar of Activity Log or simple playtime statistics

Yep. We need Activity Log/ playtime statistics

I agree, it would be grat to have an activity log. C’mon PlayStation! You can do it!

Quite surprised they have yet to add Features that gamers actual want , it makes me think what their wish list is for the PS4

Yay PS1 supp…. oh.. nope. Ok well..some of these are nice I suppose? Custom backgrounds. Notification improvements. And I guess the most interesting is supersampling for PS4 Pro with 1080p TV (which is me currently cos 4K tv’s are silly monies).

4K TVs have become pretty cheap….good 4K TVs? not so much yet. custom backgrounds have been a thing for a while now. what’s new in this update is that you can use images on a USB drive (before you could only use the capture gallery)

I’m unemployed due to health so even a ‘cheap’ 4KTV is silly money when my 1080p TV is working fine. And yeah that’s what I meant about the USB background thing. Much more choice now. :D

Still no option to delete games from the achievement list? How much longer do we have to wait?

6.1

you can delete the games with 0% of trophies

You can delete games with 0% trophies from your Trophy list for years now.

This was implemented in Update 2.50

https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2015/03/25/ps4-system-update-2-50-features-detailed-available-today/

Edit:

You can also hide games from the list if you don’t want people to see that you play specific games.

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/settings/p-rivacy.html

See under Hidden games

What about the games with 1% of trophies where all you’ve got is that lousy achievement that is basically given away by starting the game for the first time?

Please add the Ukrainian language for PS menu interface and store.

Bless you for supersampling, finally.

8.2

You do realise that only games that don’t do it themselves can benefit, right? This option basically tricks a game into thinking a 4k TV is hooked up so the game renders in 4k, then the firmware dowscales (supersamples) to 1080p and sends it to the TV.

Thing is, the SDK in summer or autumn 2016 (before the Pro released) added automatic supersampling in it’s libraries, so any game that is using that SDK and has been linked (code added from libraries) with it’s libraries will already automatically downscale to 1080p without intervention of the programmers.

Only games that used the older SDK’s needed to add supersampling (or any 1080p support) manually to their code, it’s these game that are going to benefit from this and perhaps a few titles that try to be smarter than us and do not offer an option for it and try to do something else for 1080p. Even if they use the new SDK those type of games can still benefit giving us an extra option so to speak.

TLDR; only a few games can and will benefit from this option

You do realise I’m the main pioneer for this feature and therefore know everything you’ve said already, right?

The ‘Hide Apps’ and ‘Supersampling’ feature are what I am looking for! Too many beta/alpha in my list. That [DELETED] has got to go!

Lt_Fed_Brusque 06 February, 2018 @ 12:30
10

Thank you for the USB player shortcuts and for the USB custom wallpapers :D Very much appreciated! So is the ‘Hide App’ feature. These are probably insignificant things to most PS4 users but they matter a lot to me! Thanks team :D

Play Time Management but no Activity Log…… right.

11.1

Exactly this…

“Import custom wallpapers via USB” Something that the PS3 had but the PS4 removed, and now finally gets implemented by an update several years after the PS4’s launch. As for the notifications, should never have changed the notification system from how it used to be. You’re just reintroducing features we had, then got removed and are now given back.

12.1

ps3 can do soooo many things that ps4 can’t. USB wallpapers are the least of which lol

12.2

Quite true, it completely baffles me that they removed certain functions that their old system already had and people liked. It’s such a backwards thing really.

12.3

The only consolation is that Xbox One removed WAY MORE features than PS4 did. That said, Microsoft are also quicker at adding them back I believe. (still prefer the PS4 OS personally though, sick of Microsoft completely changing their dashboard)

Needs:

Gift support

Activity log

Digital refunds

Shut down the console after completing downloads automatically

PSN name change

1440p screen resolution display and Ultra widescreen support (3440×1440 UWQHD Support)

Audio Multi-Output support (When you connect any usb headset on PS4 or on DS4 the HDMI audio is mutated.. solution? buy a headset with optical cable)

Can I turn off that light bar? I have no reason to keep it enabled same for the accelorometers etc anything to make the poor battery of DS4 controllers last longer

13.1

Definitely agree with the DS4 light bar…there should be an option to turn it off by now.

13.2

Agreed on the audio multiple output support.

13.3

Most of those are account related, nothing to do with PS4.

Gifting will never happen due to regional differences.

As for digital, stop buying them and go physical, far cheaper.

Hi,

the update sounds great. Especially supersampling. But are there any news about more 4k tv compatibility for pro users? The samsung TV I own alows it and the pro supports the hdr mode but not the 4k resolution for some reason. Samsung themselfs stated that there have been many complaints about this issue due to firmware problems.

Thanks in advance and regards.

14.1

I have a Samsung but don’t have this problem. I have both 4k and HDR enabled. But I will admit it was a b*tch getting it to work.

14.2

I have a 2014 Samsung without HDR and still have issues if I have HDCP enabled. It generally works, but it will unexpectedly without warning black screen on me, sometimes coming back, sometimes not. I settled for just leaving HDCP off as my TV has Netflix and Amazon anyway so don’t strictly speaking need it.

14.3

I have standard PS4 and run through an LG 4KUHD TV and just the TV settings alone upscaled the clarity of the game. HOWEVER, when I record video, take screenshots, or live stream, it seems to be downscaling to a clarity below the time before I got a 4K TV. Which I admit, I haven’t dug deep to figure it out yet. But it would be nice if the base formatting of PlayStation would naturally be at ITS highest resolution. But I’m sure it’s just some tweaking in the settings and not anything of a huge issue. If anyways has a resolve, let me know. Thanks 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

Supersampling is only for the pro patched games, or others as well?

How would supersampling unpatched PS4 games work when 99.9% of them render at 1080p or lower?

15.2

If the supersampling function only works for pro-patched games that’s a very weird decision. The developers have already chosen how they’d like the game to perform / look with the options provided in that patch, and this would somehow override that? Wouldn’t it be more useful to provide a flat resolution bump to games that *aren’t* getting pro patches?

There has to be a way to achieve that. If I can get freaking PS2 games to play at 4K resolution on a third party emulator, it should hardly be a herculean task for Sony itself to do likewise for PS4 titles on its own platform.

Useful yes, simple no. Forcing a game to render at a resolution it wasn’t designed for as it can cause all sorts of graphical issues. How would they decide which resolution to support on each game without testing each one? Why would they spend the money to do that?

However much I would love the feature, being able to push DriveClub up to a higher resolution would be sweet, but its unlikely to happen as its too complicated.

Hide apps? Am I dreaming? Is this real life? *crying*

16.1

* Boots up PS3 and rages at that annoying Singstar advert for the thousandth time *

Could be worse, you might LIKE Singstar and then would be raging at the fact they ruined it. The original PS3 version was better but is useless as they took the original leaderboards offline.

So even fans of Singstar hate that icon, as its the inferior version.

Can you please fix the PS4 Pro issue of it making noise in rest mode. I can’t even use rest mode because I can’t sleep with the fan going all the time.

17.1

it does make a noise when it’s downloading in rest mode..i doubt they can fix that. or does yours also make noise while it’s not doing anything?

Carnivius_Prime 06 February, 2018 @ 13:46
17.2

never noticed my pro making much noise at all at any time. :O

17.3

Older PS4s will make more noticeable noise. This is not something that can be patched as it’s a hardware issue.

As the components wear down over the years, the fan works harder to prevent overheating, and that also includes dust build-up inside.

If you also have a game in suspend, it will obviously make a noise as it’s still processing the game.

3440×1440 UWQHD Support for future updates pretty please! I stopped playing console games because of the black bars. Doesn’t have to be a native support but a upscaling with correct aspect ratio from the 1080p shouldn’t be a problem for the hardware.

What about trophy progress ?

like this http://i.imgur.com/KtzT1Ek.jpg

19.1

this is a really (really!) good idea! Can’t believe it’s not already in the OS …

I want this too. if my memory serves correctly, the Xbox 360 could do it already, so i was surprised the ps4 never did it (or is it maybe why they never did it?!?)

I don’t think that’s even possible, with the way the trophy system works. Trophies are handled entirely by the game. Certain other platforms have ‘stats’ that count towards achievements, but Playstation doesn’t have anything like that.

Can we get a checkerboard option for the Pro to upscale 1080p games, or something better than just unlocking one CPU core. Would also be nice to get that PS2 (and PS1) support we ALL know the PS4 does, but s locked to paid re-releases only.

20.1

Not possible. Checkerboard rendering is not an upscaling method you can use to go from resolution X to resolution Y, it has to be implemented in the rendering code to target resolution Y. Since non-Pro games will not target anything above 1080p (or use checkerboard rendering in their code) this won’t work…

20.2

I understand that checker-boarding isn’t possible, but surely they can add something to make 1080p games look better. Perhaps an AA and Texture filtering over-ride, something like they offer for PS1 and PS2 games on PS3 and Vita.

It would be nice if we could also organize trophy lists on the PS4 alphabetically, like we could with the PS3 & Vita… (I mean games btw, not the lists of trophies themselves)

Other than that, everything is looking nice, can’t wait to try it out.

Yes please. I’ve been asking for alphabetic sorting of the Trophy list for years on PS4.

Can’t wait to delete those notifications!

ronpecuellos_444 06 February, 2018 @ 13:08

Mejor mejoren los servidores y pongan el cambio de ID

23.1

Duidelijk, heel duidelijk. Misschien gemist dat iedereen hier verder in het Engels schrijft?

23.2

The irony of that reply is hilarious

The new parental controls would have been useful when I first contacted Sony (four years ago!) asking for proper account-specific controls. My kids are now four years older and the controls are of little use for me, but it’s good that Sony got round to plugging the hole that apparently wasn’t a priority for the console’s launch. Hopefullly PS5 will have proper controls from day 1…

for me, this OS update is okay (it’s better than nothing I guess). I’d like to see (in no particular order):

trophy sorting (alphabetical by game)

trophy deletion – I know if can be done if there’s a game listed at 0%, but I should be able to choose if I want to delete the listing if it’s 0%, 7%, 25% or whatever.

play time recorded – it existed on PS3 game saves (though not universally), so why can’t it be included in the OS? Surely it can’t be that difficult … or perhaps Sony release an API so that devs can include it.

ability to re-map controls when using remote play on Vita. I know the handheld is considered “dead” by many (seemingly by Sony too), but I still use mine most days for Vita games and for remote play. Just makes things a little easier and more useful.

Just my own random thoughts, don’t necessarily expect anyone to agree! :-)

Can our trophy screenshots please be synced online so I can look at them from any PS4?

Right now you can only see them on the PS4 you used to earn the trophy, which makes the lists look incoherent and the screenshots eventually volatile.

You allow uploading pictures to communities, so I doubt server space is an issue. Thank you 😄

How many trophies per game, how many games per user, for 70 million PS4 owners out there….

Server space IS going to be an issue!

But they should add it to PS+ or something

26.2

Arguably this is necessary. I have a couple of trophies that I first achieved on Vita, then due to shared trophy lists and my Vita not syncing, were achieved again on PS4. When the lists synced, I had the trophy with the Vita date, but the PS4 screenshot. Whoops!

I still miss the ability to also change the game volume when I listen to Spotify on my PS4. I want to be able to turn the game down so my speakers dont blow up suddenly if I have loud music.

28

Great update!!! I can hide now apps in library, bye bye demos-)

Add psn id change name!!!

TheOrangeRaver 06 February, 2018 @ 14:17
29

I’d really like for the trophies to show what percentage of it has been completed so you know how much work you need. So if there’s a trophy that asks you to kill 300 enemies, when you have killed 150 enemies shows trophy completion at 50%

If you are required to use all weapon variants of a DLC, it shows 3/5 weapons used, and so on.

And show more info about a trophy, why not add the capability to track a specific trophy…

Question !

Will we be able to keep the downloaded custom theme bgm while applying our usb wallpaper ?

Yeah can do this with PS3 they should make this happen for PS4 too

Nice, some good features.

Other ideas are:

Able to edit psn name e.g. I want to add capital letter at the start.

Able to delete trophies

Unobtainable trophies, due to servers closing and other reasons, to somehow not affect us from getting 100% on our trophy list. The trophies could be made to autopop, maybe without a timestamp, and to not add to our trophy count but still show the game at 100%.That way it would be fair to the people that earned the trophy legit when the servers were working.

And also, probably not possible, but how about being able to turn off the ‘beep’ sound the PlayStation makes when it first gets turned on?

32

Really can’t believe you still haven’t added ability to remap X and O on a per-app level. Using a Japan-bought console as an American is super annoying.

Bring Atmos sound to PS4 !

What about the CE-34878-0 PS4 Error Code is it solved?

35

Didn’t sony promise all pro games would look better on normal HDTVs at launch 2 years ago…and hasn’t the xbox one x had this feature since launch? the pro was way too rushed

stargateheaven 06 February, 2018 @ 15:01
35.1

No, they said the developers can choose if they want to do that for their game.

36

what about the Media Player installation problem ? solved in this system update ?

@to the dev team:

You have to fix the problem of the dualshock lag when using an external memory (2.5 USB 3.0 hard disk), if you use a wired Nacom, there is no lag (bluetooth problem or something else?). It is very important to find and solve this problem, otherwise you can not correctly use additional units for storing games. The problem of the external unit incorrectly unmounted, during PS4 standby, still exists, every time we have to repair the unit with the risk of losing data.

Regardz

37.1

Have you tried other HDDs as its known “some” USB 3.0 devices interfere with 2.4Ghz so would cause WiFi and Bluetooth issues.

38

I like the changes to notifications and the Library UI. Hopefully PS5 just keeps the same OS or at least the same UI, so that these features will be on PS5 day one and won’t have to be re-added in System Software updates.

good news, nice features overall

still waiting for change of online id! my money is waiting to be spent on it if it comes at a cost.

Allow us to put are trophy list in alphabetical order

Since you are adding the music to ps no, does that mean you are going to add it to the swedish market as well? Give us PS Now guys. I really want to play some of my old favorites without having to turn on my ps3.

44

These are great updated and look forward to installing the latest version. Does the ‘Play Time Management’ feature on the app version to control the times? This would make it convenient.

Happy about the notifications and the ability to hide Beta’s etc. Just hope for PS1 support now

Is there going to be anything for us VR users like having the cinema mode screen further back so it’s not so in your face like proper screens are, and Side by side 3d Video support both of which have been asked for in previous updates yet have been ignored.

All very good updates, it’s a shame there are no improvements to the audio for games and Netflix, in regards to Dolby Atmos and DTS X or even Auro 3D. Some new support for the Media Player app would of been good to, such as H.265 HEVC support via MKV and MP4, DTS, WAV and DSD support. Being able to add a 60 second video as your background would of been a more substantial addition.

The video side of things for games gets so much love and attention while the audio side of things gets none! and save your excuses about how few people have Atmos and how expensive it is because it’s NOT THE CASE! To be fair you still have to pay on Xbox too but that DOES have more audio options. Its easier for Microsoft though as its just borrowing functionality from Windows.

Also how about more music streaming services in the future such as Amazon Music (Prime Music)

Will 4k wallpapers be displayed in 4k? Or will they be scaled down to 1080p?
