God of War has gone gold, creative director calls the game “the scariest, most wonderful thing I have ever done”

Cory Barlog discusses the personal journey behind the PS4 action epic ahead of the 20th April release date

God of War is GOLD, baby!!! Going gold is an important milestone for a game. In fact, it is one of the ‘big two’ really. You have getting ‘greenlit’, which kicks off the real development of your title, and ‘going gold’ as the two most important milestones in a games development cycle.

The latter is the right of passage that lets the team, and more importantly the world, know that the game’s development is pretty much complete. All that remains is the manufacturing and shipping part of the process.

Going gold means so much more to me with this game.

It has been a long and exhausting journey filled with laughs, arguments, and a healthy dose of fear – with a side of doubt.

This was the scariest, most wonderful thing I have ever done and I can honestly say it would never have been possible without the full-throated support of Sony and the tireless work of the incredible team at Santa Monica Studio. We have been through a lot together and I would not change a thing. You are the best damn team a director could ever hope for and I am thankful beyond words for every ounce of passion and pride you put into this game.

Because this story is about fathers and sons, I wanted to thank my father, James Barlog, a source of inspiration and a great writer, who instilled within me the drive to create and the fortitude to survive the difficulties that come with that vocation.

The twentieth of April is fast approaching and I speak for the entire team here when I say we truly cannot wait for all of you to get your hands on this game.

Thank you to everyone for your support of an industry that allows me to prolong my childhood indefinitely and make a living telling people stories.

This game has the setting from my ancestors, so thats very cool for me.

A € 69,99 Triple A game without micro transactions, how on earth is this even possible, it must be a miracle!? Do you see that, EA!!!!

You can’t compare online games and single player games on that.

Microtransactions in single player games is pointless. Yes, some 1 player games still have it, but usually time savers.

Then tell me, why do we need in full price Triple A games like NFS Payback, Battlefield, etc. … micro transactions, why!? The consumer already paid € 69,99 or even more! It makes no difference if it’s an online multiplayer game or a single player game.

I’m guessing you don’t understand the concept of post-launch support. Multiplayer games have long tails and they need to be maintained for anywhere from months to years after release with continued development of new content, bug fixes and events to keep players interested. Single player games have this too, but it comes in the form of DLC. Content that you, yet again, have to pay for.

The graphical and cinematic quality of games has increased a ridiculous amount in the last 10 years, which has increased development costs a lot, yet the price of games has stayed the same. Studios need a way to be able to continue to create this great content and still pay their staff.

Doesn’t mean that I agree with all their practices, especially EA – but they’ve finally been bitten where it hurts them after SWBF2 and are rapidly pivoting their business model to save face (and, I imagine, save their Star Wars exclusivity contract).

Studios need to find an alternative way to get their game budgets under control. Games are expensive enough as is without further price rises. People I know who don’t play games, are always surprised how expensive games (at launch anyway obviously not during sales) are when I tell them what the price was. Even some people who do are still on PS3 or Xbox 360 because they can’t afford to upgrade, or had to sell their last-gen consoles to fund the upgrade.

This will be my first GoW purchase for a full price, you better not disappoint me, or else!
