New Final Fantasy VII Remake screens feature Moogles, weapon abilities, Materia, mini-games and more

Square-Enix takes us on a tour of the updates and new additions to its highly-anticipated RPG

For many longtime PlayStation fans, the original Final Fantasy VII was a groundbreaking, genre-defining experience. We’re naturally eager to learn more about the fully reimagined Final Fantasy VII Remake, which dramatically updates both the gameplay and the storytelling of the beloved original.

So when we received this latest batch of screens we asked our friends at Square Enix if they could provide some context for a few of them. Take a peek at the captions below these screenshots, then browse the full gallery below.

Weapon abilities

Each weapon has its own unique weapon abilities that increase in proficiency the more they are used. When an ability’s proficiency level reaches the maximum, that ability is then learned by the wielder and can be used when wielding any weapon.

Here we see Cloud’s Buster Sword upgrade screen. The different options allow you to improve the wielder’s status or increase the number of Materia slots available.

Switching to Classic mode

Classic Mode can be activated by selecting “CLASSIC” from the difficulty menu. In Classic Mode, party members will act automatically, with the ATB gauge filling up as they do so. In this mode, the player only needs to select which abilities, magic, and items they will use their ATB charges for. This brings the feel of the gameplay closer to the menu-based battles from the original FFVII but with the amazing immersive graphics of the remake.

It is also possible to revert to direct control at any time during Classic Mode by pushing buttons on the controller.

Using characters’ unique abilities

The triangle button activates each character’s unique ability. Cloud’s unique ability is to switch between different fighting styles. He can switch between “Operator Mode” which has a good balance between attack and defense, and “Punisher Mode” [pictured] which is geared heavily towards offense. In Punisher Mode, Cloud’s movement speed is reduced, but his basic Square button attacks are upgraded to even mightier blows.

Summons

Chocobo & Moogle use their special move “Stampede” to run down the enemy with a herd of chocobos.

While equipping Summon Materia, you will be able to summon a powerful ally once the special summon gauge fills up. Summons will fight alongside you automatically on the battlefield, but you can also use your own ATB charges to have them perform special abilities. Just before they leave the fight, your ally will unleash a powerful special move!

Assess Materia

Assess – Materia that allows you to use the Assess ability. When you use Assess on an enemy, you can see their resistances and weaknesses, making it easier to defeat them in battle.

Do we know how the whole episode thing work yet? Are you going to be able to buy the full thing and download the different parts when they release, or do you buy the first part and then the second part. And do we know how many parts there will be and how long it will be between releases?

This has been explained numerous times. Each part is a complete and full game; there are no episodes.

Well, so where do one game end and the other begin. And why do they call it Final Fantasy VII (wrote XII first, my baaad) , if they keep calling it that, of course its episodes. Still alot of questions, no matter how many times they have explained it :)

I know you’re not English, but this doesn’t make much sense. It’s not called XII? That’s a different game , this is VII Remake, this first game consists of the Midgar story. We don’t know how the rest will be split up yet, they are still making it.

They’ve announced that there will be 3 parts, but there is currently no timeline for these 3 parts. You will have to buy them individually as of this comment.

They already mentioned they currently don’t know exactly how many parts there will be. 3 is what people think it’s gonna be.

I find it funny how a nail bat is stronger than the Buster Sword lol. Can’t wait for this game though! It’s gonna be sweet!

All of the “joke” weapons boast very high attack power, but lack completely in the materia/magic department. It’s a trade off for comedy.

Looks very pretty, but it’s Square Enix. Watch it run jittery and struggle to stay at 30fps.

Using Unreal Engine too, that’ll be 1080p or maybe slightly higher on the Pro. Hopefully PS5 can run it a bit better.

Still no Red XIII though :(

Beautiful. Can’t wait to see the remade environments and cutscenes.

So it’s FFVII with FFIX’s ability system and FFXIII’s ATB/Paradigm system? (At least in classic mode it sounds like) I’m not really sure how I feel about this, I liked the Paradigm system in theory but in design it made battles very passive.

It’s a “new era” FF with a VII skin. You can assume it will have lots and lots of drawn out spam fights, you’ll struggle to ever get killed and the most tactical moment will be choosing “new game”. Which is fine if you don’t mind mindless spam, but, don’t expect to ever have to think or be challenged even for a moment (Emerald weapon will probably be a XV style “ultimate boss” hold a button for 13812 hours affair).

From the sounds of it the “classic” mode just allows you to sit and watch the “spam to fill a bar” mode instead. It doesn’t remove the “unclassic” mechanics like XIII style summons, spam to level weapons and the other junk.

It’s weird how the calls for a VII remake were largely because people were sick of the “new” FF games and wanted it to return to something closer to the high point in the series. So of course they remake it with modern crappy FF mechanics..

I played the original sooooooo much! It looks great. I have high hopes! :)

Are they going to remake VII after this VII themed XV remake?

The artists on this have an insane amount of talent. This looks like it deserves a photo mode.

It looks like a lot of time and effort has gone into making the combat system robust, and engaging.

I think this makes the most sense, as if you’re going to span this game over several episodes, the combat needs to really shine, and be interesting over a long period of time.

I’m a little bummed about the summons only be used during certain important boss events, and certain criteria needing to be fulfilled. But I can overlook this, for the greater good of the games combat being solid and providing a decent challenge.

Roll on march 2020. Kupo!

Excited for this one

Its astonishing how much hate and sceptism there still is for this, even after everything they have shown this year. Oh well, I’m going with my gut like I did with God of War and Resident Evil 2 Remake, 2 games that went on to by GOTY and nominated GOTY. Both those games had their bizarre haters too that quickly shut up when the games launched.
