Hey everyone, Comet Crash just went live today on the PlayStation Store! (£6.29/€7.99)
Comet Crash has received some great reviews and scored the Editors’ Choice Awards from GameSpot and IGN. And that’s just the old version! For the Europe release, we’ve added and remastered sound effects, touched up the graphics and added new features like Video Record.
In the Campaign, your goal is to take control of four different comets that alien forces have sent to wreak havoc on your home planet. To save your planet, you’ll have to capture and secure each comet. The alien civilization has advanced technologies that you gain access to as you defeat them. The Campaign supports up to 3 players for offline co-op play and offers three difficulty levels. Between collecting resources, building up armies, defending your base, and determining your winning strategy, there is never a dull moment.
To build structures, you need a resource called Thorium that is found in rocks that orbit the comets. Your ship can grab these rocks and drag them over to your weapons to smash them and collect the Thorium. We have a blast fighting over these rocks in co-op and battle modes.
Battle mode let’s you play against your friends, supporting 2 to 4 players offline. Teams can be configured however you want. There are 12 different maps to choose from. Fight over resources, build up defences, and attack each other with massive armies.
Eager to meet some of the cast members of Comet Crash? Let us whet your appetite…
There are four distinct weapons to choose from. Some can be used only against ground units, others against air, and some can be used against both ground and air. The weapons vary in cost and strength and you can upgrade to make them more powerful.
Bomber
One of the ground/air weapons is the Bomber. It shoots guided smart bombs that will attack and follow any enemy within its range. Enemy ships, units and structures…you name it, the Bomber can take it down. Bombers can cause some exciting scenarios! You can form a hovering mass of bombs by circling your ship around enemy Bombers. Once they’re chasing your ship, you might want to ditch them somewhere away from friendly territory…
There are four basic units for both ground and air that vary in speed and health. These are the units that you will usually be attacking with and defending your base against.
In addition to weapons and basic units, specialized units can be used for both defensive and offensive purposes. Here is a sneak peak at some of the special units you can master.
Thief
The Thief steals units from the enemy team and converts them to its own team. If your army runs into a gang of enemy Thieves, it could be bad news for you. Sending out Thieves is a great way to supplement your defensive weapons, because it reduces the enemy armies.
Carrier
This unit can pack a punch. The Carrier allows up to 20 basic ground units to take a ride through the air toward the enemy base. If you can get a fully loaded Carrier to the enemy base you will cause major destruction. On the flip side, don’t let these behemoths get too close to your territory.
Gateway
The Gateway allows friendly units to pass through it while blocking enemy units. This innovative structure can be used to manipulate the path. In the Campaign you’ll find some fun and challenging puzzle levels where the Gateway really comes into play.

This game looks good, I’m especially impressed with the local multi-player option but I’ve never really been into more traditional tower defence games. Is there a demo planned at any point?
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 4:11 pm by John Bates
Thanks computerzombie, you’ll find it’s a big departure from tower defence with more of a RTS feel to it. We are working on a demo for later this year, but for now you’ll find plenty of gameplay videos and reviews.

Do you mean now like NOW or now like when the Store is updated later today?
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 4:16 pm by John Bates
Good point, by “now” I mean today when the store update happens! Should be very soon, so stay tuned.

I have a really short attention span for tower defence games, I get REALLY into them for a few hours/sessions, then get bored and never play them again.
This does look a bit different, but I don’t think I’ll be partaking.
Maybe I should go back to PixelJunk Monsters instead, I hate leaving games unfinished.

Currently playing through Pixeljunk Monsters on PSP and there’s still about 100 million tower defence games to play though! Still, can’t complain if they’re good and this one does look nice.
Like the multiplayer idea as I always worry about getting a digital game and completing it, if there are no modes left to play then what do you do with the game?
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 4:23 pm by John Bates
Exactly, the battle mode will keep it going strong. We also have updates planned for later this year, including new levels.

CC is quite a poor game. I watched a buddy of mine play it for about 20mins and we both hated it. The mechanics are quite sloppy, graphically it looks so so and these kinds of games cheapen the PSN to a somewhat XBL Arcade level.

And not yet UNO on the EU PS Store…

YES, this is why I bought a PS3, NOT for Uncharted 2, NOT for Heavy Rain, NOT for Rachet & Clank but for… Comet Crash….NOT!

But I loved FLOWER, that was a great PSN game (why no DLC?)

i’d be more likely to buy after trying a demo.
if the game is good that is, and it looks like it could be fun.

just because you dont like or appreciate these type of game put out by the smaller studios tielo , that doesn’t mean everybody wont, sure we all got our PS3′s for the big titles (some of which you’ve mentioned ) but in the down time beteen there releases LOTS of people enjoy killing some time playing PSN games like this. I for 1 will be buying and no doubt enjoying this game.
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 4:35 pm by John Bates
Words of wisdom, rob_dee81! We’ve packed a ton of gameplay into Comet Crash that will keep you entertained.

Yeah I’m buying this, because it seems to have really good local-multiplayer features.
And that’s why I didn’t buy Smash Cars by Creat Studios, it didn’t support split-screen, only online.
Thank you Pelfast, for making a game I can play with my buddies locally!

You’re welcome! Comet Crash couch multiplayer is so much fun.

Hate to bring this news, but we got more information about when the new store content (including Comet Crash) is available. In case you haven’t read the previous blog post, Mike from the PlayStation Store team has given an update on the delay:
“You’re all going to hate me – and I’m mentally preparing myself for the hate – but it’s going to be another later publish (8.00pm) I’m afraid.”
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/10/08/%E2%80%98heads-up% E2%80%99-playstation-store-update-8th-october-2009/
Hang in there – it’s worth the wait.

JOHN!!!
lol …… i need this game ……*sigh* guess i gotta go make a cuppa tea kick back and wait paitently , thanks for letting us know, i know you guys are just as eager to get it on the store as we are
while we are waiting you got any hot comet crash strategy tips john?
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 6:42 pm by John Bates
Mmm, tea. Yeah I’m about ready for that as well – cept over here it’s 10:30am
Strategy tips! Good idea. Here are a few to get started…
- Sometimes it’s best to procrastinate on building defenses. Towers build quickly so you can always plop down towers ahead of the enemy units if you have cash.
- Don’t forget offense! Build Basic Ops structures early so you have enough guys to rush later on.
- You control the path that units travel on by building towers, so feel free to make it as long as you can. The longer their path, the more time your turrets have to take out the enemy units.

Looks interesting but there are a few similar PSN games.
I would really like a demo before i decide to part with my cash.
So I will be waiting for a demo, don’t think thats too much to ask!?
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 8:28 pm by John Bates
Nope, not too much to ask. We expect to get you a demo later this year.

Sony should start doing what MS does and make it mandatory to submit a demo with every game as I like the look and I am a massive TD fan got Pixeljunk Monsters and Savage Moon but this is obviously much more and not sure whether to part with cash.. Although it looks interesting.

I’ve never really been into tower defense, but I’ve been pretty addicted to one on my touch.
But I gotta say, this game looks pretty awesome from watching that video
Looks well thought out and you seem to be taking tower defense that bit further, I may have to invest in this baby. [:
Cheers

Thanks for noticing our departure from the usual TD style. It’s designed like a mini RTS without micromanagement of units. And unlike most RTS games, Comet Crash is designed for console play with an arcade feel that has no need for keyboard/mouse.

Well still no store update and its gone 9.30pm. I’m really looking foward to this as i loved Tower defence i loved savage moon and pj monsters and just recently i’ve been craving an rts game and was gonna get command and conquer however i may as well opt for this comet crash! I think more small independent studious should get their games out there on the psn because this is what innovates the industry not big block buster titles which stick to proven tired formulas.

Just booted up the game and discovered the soundtrack is from electronic music legends Bill Leeb & Rhys Fulber (i.e. Frontline Assembly, Delerium, Conjure One, etc). I’ve always found their music a good fit mixed with gaming, especially their instrumentals. Nice to see another game officially license some of it!
Posted on 9 October, 2009 at 9:52 pm by John Bates
Yeah, great tracks from them. I was going through my collection a while back, and when I played Dark Core I thought “this is perfect!”

JOHN!!! i fell asleep on the couch last night waiting for it
lol but have got it now and i have to give you top marks
wow what a really cool VERY addictive game , ive just finished the 3rd level on ranked and i love it youve captured the addictivness of tower defense and the unlimited strategic possibilitys of a RTS without bogging me down in menus dealing with micro management . Its so satisfying building up your army and unleashing them on the enemy
any 1 out there whos not sure about buying GO GET IT NOW!! its great . Also i love the style and look of the game and the music fits very well.John please pass on my coments to your team as you guys have done a great job
thanks again

Just bought this game yesterday, and I have’nt been able to get away from my PS3 since
. It’s just such a cool and entertaning game!!
Everyone should buy this game, it’s so much more that (just) a tower defence game.
John, the updates that you are planning for later this year, do they include some kind of online game mode? That would make it even better.
Thanks for this very nice game to a nice low price.
