FirstPlay Episode 6

Hello everyone,

metadata_006

I’m taking a short break from harvesting footage in the digital fields to tell you about what we have coming up in FirstPlay episode 006, which will be up on the Store this Wednesday.

2_lostplanet

Basically, a whole bunch of stuff. We start with Capcom’s off-world bug-hunter Lost Planet 2. The game ticks a lot of our boxes – monsters, robots, explosions, snow – and you can find out whether it holds together or falls apart like a third-person Brundlefly in our HD review. After you’ve stopped thinking about that weird analogy, we’ve also got a preview of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – the biggest guest PSP has had round to dinner for ages – and a review of twinkle-eyed retro adventure,3D Dot Game Heroes.

3_dotheroes

On top of that we’ve got our regular round-up of the best of the PlayStation Network, including the latest and greatest downloadable movies, a handful of PSone classics, and a guide to the tactical minefield that is Final Fantasy XIII’s Paradigm system. And there’s even more in our screenshot galleries, including the latest from Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.

As ever, this is all yours for just 99p, or just £8.99 for a 90-day subscription.

And I know many of you are asking on an update on the featured downloads. This episode we’ve got a Kane & Lynch theme for you all, and the next four episodes will each come with a free minis title.

If you have any questions or comments then you can email us at
FirstPlay@futurenet.com, find us on Twitter at @firstplay_uk, or hunt us down on the EU forums

See the Future of PS3. First.

Did you enjoy this?

Cool. Looking forward to the free minis in the coming weeks. :)

Gamester101 11 May, 2010 @ 1:26 pm   3

Much better content this week.

GahLakTus 11 May, 2010 @ 1:33 pm   4

why is it only minis that are free with this? there is only like 4 minis worth having and i have them, the rest aint worth even having on your ps3 hard drive. never mind the psn servers. why cant we get GOOD fre stuff? mayb a psone classic? or a single episode of sam and max? plus theres loads of other stuff that cud be fre. possibly dlc for sum games, a few free lbp LEVEL kits rather thn the costumes? or some custom avatars? i know id like some of the first play file pictures as an avatar 9 the kratos one, and this ones big boss picture above at top)
any1 else got ideas?

sorry but focusing on giving away minis is kinda pointless as for me anyway they dont interest me at all as i bought a ps3 not a psp and would rather have dynamic themes or avatars for my ps3 not rubbish minis .still not touching firstplay until its even worth the money which as of so far its not . outdated stuff and lame content

moriarty1975 11 May, 2010 @ 1:54 pm   6

so…..firstplay for ireland may 19th?

    Nathan Ditum 12 May, 2010 @ 2:37 pm

Yes – barring any last-minute technical hitches, we’ll be with you next week.

Apnomis 11 May, 2010 @ 2:09 pm   7

It’s a shame you guys didn’t co-ordinate with MM/SCEE to get some exclusive hands-on time with LBP2, given the buzz that has been created with the announcement yesterday a preview this Wednesday would have probably resulted in your highest selling issue so far…

Content is King with the business model you’ve adopted so the focus should really be on being first with the trailers and the previews etc along with more ‘can’t see anywhere else’ content like interviews and studio tours etc. I still think a monthly model with freebies similar to the Qore model would have been an easier sell, or even fortnightly like Pulse…

(Not that I’m knocking the service – I don’t mind paying the 99p when there is something on there that interests me directly, so far you’re 2 for 6.)

I don’t understand why people are complaining that they’re ‘only’ getting free Minis, every Mini costs more than the price of each Freeplay episode and a free game is a free game, isn’t it? Asking for PSOne Classics is like asking for a free car with the purchase of a TV.

GAMESBOSS 11 May, 2010 @ 2:22 pm   9

The psn update?? Where is?

GAMESBOSS 11 May, 2010 @ 2:23 pm   10

Sorry, it’s tomorrow

SpiderMike_X 11 May, 2010 @ 2:54 pm   11

Oooooo minis!!!

OOOOOO MINIS!!!

Lmfao.

Hey subscribers, least you’re getting your moneys worth now.

I’m sorry but this is pathetic. OK, it’s free so I guess we shouldn’t moan, but you’ve allowed an open forum in the forum of this comment section so I WILL be heard.

You’re raking in all this money from subscription and the most you’re offering is minis, and probably not even half decent minis like Monopoly or that FMV one that just got released.

They’re proabably the ones no one has the right mind to buy and WOULD only receive as a freebie. I’m glad I stuck to my guns and left FarcePlay after the 2nd ep. Their really hasn’t been anything I haven’t found beforehand and even if you were to offer a golden plated statue of Kratos himself I doubt I’d let it grace my PS3′s HDD or soak up my bandwidth any more than it has done already.

And you can go ahead and blast me for being a troll. Not fussed. We’re all entitled to an opinion. Some like it, some hate it, and some bury their heads in the sand and hide behind the “it’s only 99p” excuse.

seany1 11 May, 2010 @ 3:09 pm   12

the reason people moan about minis free or not is that they are mostly all rubbish and have no trophy support or anything and also best played on a psp which not all ps3 owners have , stick to giving away ps3 stuff as 1st play is a ps3 thing

Apnomis 11 May, 2010 @ 3:11 pm   13

@ SpiderMike_X, just to remind you, you signed up for a digital gaming magazine and not a ‘PSN Lucky Dip’ service. Future Publishing have been more than clear with people ever since the service was announced that it is the games journalism you pay for – they never promised nor indicated that you’d get free products as part of the subscription.

The idea is that you pay for the reviews and previews and interviews and other journalistic content and frankly 99p is more than reasonable for a half-hour to hour ‘programme’ about gaming. Think of it like buying an episode of a TV show to download. If you paid £8.99 because you wanted free games then, frankly, more fool you… If you don’t like the quality or content of their ‘script’ that is one thing, but not giving free stuff away every week is not a reason to complain!

It’s a bit like signing up for Sky Movies and then complaining to them because they don’t post you free Blu-rays each week to offset your subscription cost!

mrfight67 11 May, 2010 @ 3:13 pm   14

4 Free Minis? YESS!!

seany1 11 May, 2010 @ 3:24 pm   15

apnomis i think theres 1 thing thats assured for most subscribers to firstplay ,when it runs out they will not sub again lmao whats the point when everything is free on the internet , screenshots ,reviews all static themes lol u can get all that for free so all your paying for is the voices which aint worth 99p or 8.99 lol

SpiderMike_X 11 May, 2010 @ 3:29 pm   16

@Apnomis – I didn’t sign up for jack. I was fortunate enough not to lay £8.99 down in the hopes of receiving a beta invite every other week like so many people are hoping for.

I love how people pull these comparisons out their backside. “Yeh its like buying a toaster and complaining you don’t get the bread with it.”

The only difference with Sky and my toaster is that if I don’t like it there is a consumer support base that guarantee customer satisfaction without waiving my statutory rights.

The best I get with the PSN is “we don’t give refunds – get on with it.”

seany1 11 May, 2010 @ 3:33 pm   17

i really dont see how they cant just make a unique psn avatar each week to give away not like it would cost much and give away the odd big thing monthly or something like a mini or ps1 game

SpiderMike_X 11 May, 2010 @ 3:37 pm   18

@ Seany – There IS no excuse. They have a wealth of resources at their fingertips, man-hours and every form of communication tool known to man. People ask for things and they [mostly] get ignored in favour of uselessness like a few extra trophy menu options or an online gaming ‘magazine’ that offers yesterday’s news today.

And the fact people keep paying out for it baffles me. I’d rather pay a subscription to get the things I want from a console rather than have apps stuffed in my face because the service is free.

    Nathan Ditum 12 May, 2010 @ 2:47 pm

    Hi Mike,

It sucks that you’ve not been enjoying FP so far. We work very hard on making it as good as possible, and obviously hearing that people aren’t enjoying it is very disappointing.

We are listening. We’re taking all the feedback on board, and there’s been some very good suggestions on content and presentation that we’re looking to implement right now.

It is important to realise we’re not Sony, though. We can’t just click our fingers and have exclusive content, or decide to provide avatars. We have to seek approval, put deals in place, and talk to several different publishers and content providers – and that’s exactly what we’re doing right now.

seany1 11 May, 2010 @ 3:41 pm   19

yeah i agree with u mike thats why i dont buy anything from psn store these days getting fed up with sony as a whole tbh especially scee anyway . use us as a milking ground and we always get everything last or not at all . will be funny too see the psn premium come out and scee give us a shabbier version of what u.s will get and yet we will get asked to pay more as usual . emmm no thanks if so

SpiderMike_X 11 May, 2010 @ 3:42 pm   20

I’m preaching the choir, mostly, anyway. Sony’s intentions are in the right place but they need to pay more attention to the community and focus on more current problems than looking for the next best thing. That’s me done for this week.

Peace.

s0602277 11 May, 2010 @ 3:47 pm   21

I was looking forward to this when it was first announced, and I bought the first two episodes which were ok. Now, it’s a waste of time, everything in this episode I have already seen, whether on Youtube HD, IGN or Nathan Ditum’s very own Official PLaystation Magazine. Waste of time, nothing exclusive.

The thing about FirstPlay is that it simply does not have a hook past “BUT YOU GETZ A FREE MINI STOP KOMPLAINING GUYZ”. (There’s a reason their free, the same reason Lost:The Video Game got in PS3 bundle – It was awful)

Anything you can get in it you can get twofold in a magazine eg; PSM3, with more articles, previews etc; AND a DVD which has more content than FirstPlay AND a few tidbits too, such as posters, guides, cheatbooks etc; (PSM3 sometimes include CubeCrafts which are mindless but fun)

For £4 more, you get a magazine, a DVD with approximately 3x more content than FirstPlay, and other tidbits. With FreePlay, a £1 theme or £3 mini with news read in annoying voices.

FirstPlay needs a bigger hook. It needs more content, more exclusive news and things SPECIAL to FirstPlay, like a competition, invitation to a Home Space, colour schemes for your XMB etc; SOMETHING that truly differentiates it from the rest of the PSN.

Until then, this is just another wasted experiment.

nemesisND1derboy 11 May, 2010 @ 4:21 pm   24

Hi Nathan,

Just a question for you. I have read on various sites the Firstplay will be launching in Ireland next week, would you be able to confirm if this is true? Also will the back catalogue be available for us to download aswell?

Thanks!

    Nathan Ditum 12 May, 2010 @ 2:48 pm

I’ll look into the older eps – they stay on the UK store for 6 weeks, but not sure about the technicalities of getting older content onto the Irish store.

meccamonty 11 May, 2010 @ 4:24 pm   25

whenever FirtPlay comes to Ireland, (may 19th?) Ill pick up the first issue.

Tridentmorph 11 May, 2010 @ 4:25 pm   26

Well, personally I feel that the content in the episodes is pretty decent for the money, hey come on, you can’t get much for 75p (reduced for subscription). Even if I get quarter of an hour out of it that’s ok value for me.

As for all the moaning about the free downloadables – look at the word FREE… Again, guess I have realistic expectations of what to expect from this service.

Personally will happily renew my sub when it runs out.

Vergis69 11 May, 2010 @ 4:30 pm   27

I paid (wasted) 99p for an episode of this to see what its about. Only to find it lacked on content, forced adverts down my throat and filled up valuable space on the HDD.

FirstPlay?…LastPlay for me.

divine1000 11 May, 2010 @ 5:58 pm   28

Six episodes into my subscription and still no reason to download a single one of ‘em, head over to the US blog and check out the post for the latest episode of Qore to see how it should be done.
I won’t bother posting anymore comments after my subscription expires, until then…

BalramRules 11 May, 2010 @ 7:33 pm   29

FirstPlay’s just getting better and better isn’t it?? =P

tehPete 11 May, 2010 @ 8:04 pm   30

The problem here is partly that Firstplay’s come about at a time when most of us will have by now caught an episode of Qore, so comparisons are inevitable – Qore, being a Sony in-house effort, simply has better access to the exclusives and such that people want, or at least it seems that way.

The idea mentioned above about Avatars in the DLC section is great as they should be free anyway, but how about some exclusive video content? Where’s the behind-the-scenes look at LBP2 to follow its official announcement? I’d love to see a comparison of some LBP levels on the LBP2 engine, perhaps some banter with the MM staff, questions from the community or blog celebrities, sneaks peaks at some of the gadgets in the new game – surely Sony could help arrange this?

Please don’t let Firstplay become the poor british cousin.

cthulhhu 11 May, 2010 @ 9:22 pm   31

great!
27 countries > thats europe
and “firstplay” only availible in england.
nice job SCEE. lame as usual.

wiktorclunk 11 May, 2010 @ 9:30 pm   32

When POLANd ????????????????

wardragon989 11 May, 2010 @ 11:08 pm   33

Like you guys are listening to what we have to say >=(

You guys are pathetic.

SwiftRyu 11 May, 2010 @ 11:52 pm   34

My word, people getting so worked up over an entirely optional online magazine service. In my opinion, and no I don’t work for Sony, FirstPlay is a pretty good deal. I subscribed to it and have enjoyed looking at some of the reviews and seeing full HD screenshots on my screen. I don’t like all of it, the humour can be hit and miss, but it has got some chuckles from me. Its under a quid for an episode, and people complain because they don’t get a plate of digital chips on the side? What were you expecting? Free copy of Burnout? This is dirt cheap, its just a mini digital gaming magazine.

The fact I’m getting 5 minis for free, on top of the other DLC content and the digital magazine itself is pretty good for the price. You want ridiculous antics, look at Capcom. Reskinned their two best games from last gen, called them DMC4 and RE5 and made us pay full whack. Hell, they’ve even re-released RE5 and kept content from being accessed on the disc so they could sell it to you later. Super Street Fighter IV, or if you like, some new characters and what the online should have been Fighter IV. At least there is some money off the retail price.

SwiftRyu 11 May, 2010 @ 11:52 pm   35

FP has delivered what it promised and will get better in time. I’m sure they could use suggestions, but maybe not orders from people on their high horse fighting the cause like a white knight.

thats if it sticks around for long , remember cant make it if loads stop buying it now can they .

Bonyman 12 May, 2010 @ 1:22 am   37

Hi Nathan,
I believe FirstPlay is coming to Ireland next week. I’ve read reviews and comments of the previous issues but i don’t mind trying a few episodes to see for myself. The free minis are an added bonus although i probably already have one or more of them. I can always ‘gift’ them to someone if that’s the case. Looking forward to checking it out.

Battery-Acid- 12 May, 2010 @ 1:27 am   38

Well I for one am happy with it and will be renewing my subscrition.

Legion_Dragon 12 May, 2010 @ 8:10 pm   39

The only thing I ask is the same as some others, I don’t own a PSP so don’t have much use for minis, now please don’t get me wrong MUCHO THANKO for the freebies and I did download and play the last one but I’d have more use out of themes, full games, movies or extra game content (like the chute for Just Cause 2) as my mate was actually rather jealous ;-)
could you not save up for 4 weeks and rather than splash out and spoil us with 4 minis… Do it with one full game LOL xxx or a Movie from the movie store? Or even … And this is my personal favourite and should make you all chuckle … A money off voucher for the PSN store :-D we could spoil ourselves HAHA

Anyways Much Love, Goodnight Godbless xxx

Looking forward to your reply …
PSN … Legion_Dragon … lol
