Hi Everyone, you may have heard in all the E3 hype that we are launching a new premium subscription service called PlayStation Plus, so I just wanted to give you all a quick heads up on what you can expect to get from this great new service so you have all the info before launch on the 29th June.
The first thing to note is that PlayStation Network is still free to join and all the current features will remain free. PlayStation Plus will be offering you a service above and beyond this, including loads of content and exclusive, member-only, PSN features.
From 29th June you’ll be able to purchase a 1 year or 90-day membership from PlayStation Store and instantly get your hands on the following premium features. Plus, if you sign up for a 1 year membership between 29th June and 3rd August, we’ll also throw in a free downloadable copy of the award winning LittleBigPlanet.
Games:
As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least four games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of one PSN game, two minis and one PS one classics available on PlayStation Store for you to download. You also get premium avatars and dynamic themes each month, many of which are exclusive to members.
Talking of exclusive, there will also be discounts available on loads of PlayStation Store content, just for members, so make the most of them as these will change each month as well.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials before they go live to the public so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
Just the games, avatars and themes alone are worth at least £200* per year, so even before the other benefits, this service is great value for money
Full Game Trial:
This premium feature gives you the chance to try PSN and Blu-ray disc titles before you buy them in a whole new way. We are not talking normal demos of selected parts of a game here. With Full Game Trial, you can download the full game and play it as if you owned it for approximately one hour, depending on the game, before you decide if you want to buy it or not. So you can check out the online modes, play against friends or anything else you’d normally do with a game.
The other great thing is that your progress and trophies from the trial will all be unlocked if you buy the game so no need to go back and start again.
Automatic Download:
We wanted to offer members the speediest service possible so sign up and you can set your PS3 to automatically receive the latest game updates for all the games you play, PS3 system software updates and even have game demos sent directly to your PS3 without lifting a finger.
Just set the time you want to receive them and your PS3 will automatically wake up and download everything, ready for when you next want to play. No more waiting to play your favourite game because there is a new patch or having to remember when the latest system software is launching, let your PS3 do the work.
Details of this great new service, including a list of content available for the first 2 months will be on playstationplus.com between now and the 29th, but don’t forget to get on the Store and sign up before the 3rd August to get the added bonus of a free copy of LittleBigPlanet.
It would be great to hear what you guys think of this new service and I’ll be back one here on Wednesday morning to try and answer any questions you have.
Cheers,
James

You loose access to the games if you drop your subscription!? Deal breaker for sure. That’s ludicrous.

I’m going to get this dffo! Xd im assuming you can subscribe using psn cards? and also i notice that on the site it said “Minimum System Software: 3.40″ so when does that go live then?
also you keep mentioning the features as though there are more to come than those listed would this be correct?

Hi, you can defo use the PSN cards. Look out for more info on 3.4 on the blog!

the value is there but…other than the games, (hope you like what sony dishes out.) the “+” package is lacking much needed social networking options. no Xgame chat, no XMB parties, no SKYPE app (i can dream.), no sharing music or vids with friends online…HOME doesn’t have it & i guess sony sees no use having XMB access to these types of features for those not interested in HOME. Can’t believe E3 has come & gone, with no network enhancements or FW announcements… E3 disappoints…add on a silent insomniac games, the lack of a R3 trailer or news was a deathblow…totally bummed now.

Hello.
I’m from Croatia and I have a UK PSN Account (because we don’t have our own Store) and been using it for a while with PSN Cards.
If I’m not from the UK, but sign up for PS+ on a UK account, will I lose any features?
Thanks, lukavelic.

How about making multiple pakages?
In that way I can choose what I want:
- Online backup of the copy prohibited savegames.
- The premium webbrowser that gets updated every month.
- Auto-sync for the trophies + trophycard.
- Full game demo’s.
For the nice price of lets say 20 Euro’s a year (4 options checked times 5 Auro a year).
And please check: http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi?Amount=50&From=USD&To=EUR
5 0 USD != 50 EUR

im starting to think you are a little retarded at sony .. dont you listen to the people?
all people are screaming voice chat.. and if you had brought it to the plus membership you had made a lot of subscriptions.. now theres not much point (no people dont realy care about exklusive themes and avatars)
well.. i just want a new xmb.. but thats never gonna come true

Will the PS3 automatically shut down after I’ve used the “Automatic Download” feature?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:23 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, the PS3 will automatically wake up, download, then shut down afterwards. You can also set the time it wakes up to best suit you

Oh man. I’m not feeling the love here right now. I buy store content ALOT and I’d love some free content for paying a quarter (or less) of the price. When I want to voice chat with my friends I suck it up and use Skype on the PSP or my PC.
Just a quick question about the discounts, are they specific items like the Special Offers that are already there or is it across the board, say 10% off all items for example? Despite the comments here this service is gonna be awesome.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:26 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, there will be exclusive discounts that are for members only and other discounts that are better than those already on the Store.
Normal Store discounts for everyone will still be available but PlayStation Plus members will get better and exclusive deals

Hey James, can you help us with a response on this: Will PS+ be available in Romania?
At the moment we don’t have access to PSN store so we can’t really get hold of this particular service right?
It’s a shame really because there’s a lot of people who would like to enjoy the benefits of PSN+.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:30 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, PlayStation Plus is currently only available in the countries that have a Store, however we are constantly working on adding new Stores so please keep checking

“The games that you get within the service are available for you to keep and use as long as you are a member.”
Wait, so the games you get for free are really just shareware, as in they stop working if you no longer want to (or can) pay? Wow. I think I’ll pass.

Dear SCEE
For is the reason for downloading the Full Blu-Ray Trial version of the game – let’s say 25 GB, when we will be able to play only for 1 hour? The most stupid idea I have ever heard.
So when my subscription will end, I will no longer may play the Full Blu-Ray Game which I will buy? So to play it again after my subscription, I need to buy another subscription, to play the title, which I have already paid? So to play my game for 4 years ahead I need to pay 4x subscription for 1 year. If game will cost 40 Euro, to play it for 4 years I need to pay 40 Euro for game and 4x 50 Euro for subscription? Nice.
Sincerely
VAMET
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:33 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, don’t worry, the full game trial lets try the game out for one hour and then decide if you want to buy it. If you do buy the game then it is yours to keep forever, whether you are a member or not. Also any games you buy with the members discounts are yours to keep forever.

Dear KiD_rus
I don’t panic, I will not buy something, that force me to pay a lifetime subscription, to play my content, if not, it will no longer available. Nonsens.
Yeah and next step should be Linux as Other OS, only for Members of PSN+?
Best regards.

The perception that 2010 is the year sony took a dump on the early adopters of the ps3, no major FW update in ages, & the removal of features that only affected your earliest supporters. Bravo sony, you’ve just proved you’re completely out of touch with what your paying customers really want. Why bother with a “blogshare” site, if you don’t listen or care about your hardcore base?…. so close & yet so far…if xgame chat were included in the current deal everyone would have been in. again, there is some value with the current deal provided you don’t already own whipeout HD, LBP & annual quore subscription. btw, quore annual subscribers were promised beta access… how many betas can a playstation plus member expect annually? will playstation plus members have early access to new psn features as well as games? (ex xgame chat, an apps store, skype maybe?)

What about if you already own LBP? There’s no any other option or equivalent discount?

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 8:38 am by BlackMage3
LOL
Anybody who subscribes to this is setting themselves up for a rude wakening. The idea behind this is that after a year or 2 you would have received loads of games that you don’t want to lose.
Sony is hoping that the above will keep you from unsubscribing.
Almost blackmailing you to keep paying.
I’m sorry, but I’m not into rentals.

What sort of market research was done before deciding on this?
I know I am not representational of the entire PS3 user base but £40 a year for a bunch of stuff I probably wouldn’t normally buy.
Kind of feels like the end of a shopping aisle in the supermarket – Offers on good brands and at a slashed price but the kind of stuff you don’t actually need.
And to charge for automatic updates is really pushing your luck!
Sorry to have a go James, I’m sure the team have worked hard. It just isn’t for me.

Second try because my first comment was too long.
It’s a joke for everyone how know’s the difference between Feature and Customer-Service.
There’s nothing new. Nothing which is worth paying for.
Features would be:
- file manager (sub-directories f.e.)
- theme generator
- skype (!!)
- hosting games and conferences
- unlocked savegames for backup’s
- the possibility to meet other peoples in HOME, WORLDWIDE!!
Best regards from Vienna

im interested in this ‘full game trial’ system.
but i have a question.
if i download a full game trial of a blu-ray game (lets take infamous as an example)
if i decide to buy it do i have to purchase the blu-ray or do i purchase an unlock key for the downloaded full game?
if the latter is the case then im sold… i want ps3 digital downloads.
if its the former than pfft, not wasting my bandwidth only to delete it after 1hr.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:38 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, then consider yourself sold, it’s the latter! when you download the full game trial you will only need to purchase the liscence and the full game will be unlocked, including trophies and game saves from your trial period. Enjoy

A service completely useless…and at that price for me at least.
If I see at this service as a (bad)copy of Xbox Live this lose by far, but PlayStation+ have a different way to give additional content that have no correlation with online gaming.
In this way PS+ have a meaning.
No Thanks Sony. I’ll pass for now.

Hey James
Nice subscription model (I’m a sucker for premium content)
I have a question about the auto download/update feature – in order for it to turn on, does it need to be in “stand by mode”, like when you have it on “Remote Play via Internet mode”, where the fan still spins and the WLAN green light is always on (on my PS3 Phat anyway)?
If so this is really annoying as a) it uses power c) it creates heat and b) it causes noise
Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers

Hi, the PS3 will need to be in standby mode in order for it to wake up and update.

Hi, we haven’t changed any of the usage rules of any games and so everything will behave as it normally would, the only difference is that the free games from PlayStation Plus (4 per month) are only available while you’re a member

Hi, long time reader, first time poster,
I was just wandering how we sign up for this service? I was under the impression we can register for the Little Big Planet game but when I follow the link to the European Playstation Plus page there is no option I can find to sign up.
Other than that this is an interesting move by Sony and makes sense for somebody like myself as being able to rent games along with the cross party chat etc is just up my street.
Thank you.

James, I don’t know if you’ll get this far down the comments, but what happens if Sony decide to discontinue the service? If after 5 years and £200 of subscription, Sony stops the service, would I (theoretically) lose access to the 240 ‘free’ games I’d been enjoying up to that point?

im confused right, this area is for questions about the service so why the f do so many of you idiots feel the need to bombard the post with complaints? its not being forced on you if you don’t want it GET LOST it’s really that simple! You dont have to buy it so quit complaining this is for those of us that DO want to buy it. I should also imagine from the way its being reffered to that the features will be expanded in the near future and seeing as on a few sites Cross Game chat wwas listed then removed…. if it were released FREE I’d hope all of you shouting becuase you haven’t got it come back and apologise for trolling the topic with useless complaints also if we do get it I’d bet money you people would whine on about how crap it is. -_-

Hey, I understan the thinking behind the subscription service and I think it’s a very fair deal, especially with the free LBP and (hopefully) substantial discount scheme. One of the main reasons I got my PS3 was to watch movies, I was just wondering if there is a chance we’ll see any content from the video delivery service or MUBI in the future. I’d love the option of an unlimited rental service or one or two free rentals a month with my PSN+ account. Re. The games we can play whilst subscribed, does it change every month or do we just get acces to a FURTHER 4 games. If say i’m enjoying playing Braid, but then it comes to the end of the month, do I have to buy it to continue playing?

Do you guys at Sony even read this?
http://share.blog.us.playstation.com/
There are thousands of ideas and people voting them. We wanted just PS2 Backward compatibility and Cross chat.
Automatic download should be a firmware feature for all of us.

James, you say that the discounts will be equivalent to a few free games each year, but you don’t say what the discounts will be. Will it be 10%, 15%, 2%, or maybe depending on the title? And what about those 1-hour game trials? How many games will be available to try? All of them? I doubt it. Just like with the support for PSPGo I imagine it will be a tiny fraction of the PS3 library.
Then thing is, you just post general examples and don’t give any concrete details about the service. And from where I’m standing it seems that you are trying to gloss over the uncomfortable details.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 3:38 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, in the next couple of days we will be putting the detailed list of content on ps.com so you can see exactly what will be available for the first two months.
The discounts largely range between 20 and 50% and they vary by title. For full game trial there will be 2 of these each month, and every month they will be different titles.

@ VAMET,
No you have it completely wrong. The full Blu-Ray game download is a trial thing. Say you wanto to buy a new game in your local shop, you can download it and play it for an hour before buying it, to help you decide if its worth your money. You don’t lose your full Blu Ray game if you unsubscribe, only the free PSN games you get each month. For example, If you sign up you get Wipeout HD free this month, however if you dont subscribe next year, you lose it. THIS IS ONLY FOR THE FREE PSN GAMES! NOT BLU-RAY GAMES!!!

Im so getting this! Day one for me. This is something I wanna support for the future, the features, services and content may not be the absolute best but its good value anyway. I will sign up for a year and possible another year after that only for support. I hope the money you make Sony is gonna lead to more services and features. I want to see this evolve to include movies, television and music.
I can’t understand why you guys think this is expensive? Its like 3-4 hours of work income, for a YEAR of subscription! With lots of games, probably a bunch of not so good, and possibly some real gems.
Getting LBP for early signup, yeah I have that on disc, getting it as digital download is awesome, I dont have to use my disc.
Im getting this and a new harddrive for my PS3. Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB (hybrid ssd/hdd).

Not sure,i’d rather just buy the content, there’s no guarantee the games i’d buy show up.
Also stopping access to demos we’d normally get sucks,it’s bad enough waiting forever for them.

I know people will think I’m a mug for saying this, but £40 for a year isn’t too overpriced at all? It’s just under £4 a month, and compared to something like “Firstplay” (which I bought a 90 day subscription for) you get a hell of a lot more bang for your buck! I especially like the idea of more avatars and dynamic themes especially ones exclusive to you as a member to this service. Only down side is the needing to renew to keep the content active. This won’t affect me however as being an avid PS3 user I’ll stay subscribed. Looking forward to the 29th James. Don’t disappoint!
Oh and by the way when are you able to subscribe? There doesn’t appear to be any option via the link at the moment
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 3:41 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, glad your keen, you will be able to subscribe on the PlayStation Store from the 29th June. don’t forget to do it before the 3rd Aug to make sure you get your free download of LBP!

Automatic updates shouldn’t be a premium service, it’s common sense to have game updates of your owned collection are updated in the background automatically from where I’m standing.
All the other stuff is indeed premium and I can understand the coupled price tag with it.

I’m almost sold! LOVE the game trial idea, 2 per month sounds fair to me(stop whinging), not fussed about cross game anything, hate getting bothered by messasges when deeply immersed in a game. just a couple of questions…
1) £39.99 a year…for roughly how long? Please say it’s not like those magazines…issue 1= 1.99/ 8.99 thereafter. I dont want to get held to ransom for content i have fallen in love with hehe.
2) will the mini’s and psone titles, be freely transferable to a psp for the duration of the subscription? i own a few titles of both, but no psp…who knows maybe xmas! but the prospect of a possible catalogue of games i could accumulate between now and then kinda sells me on the idea.
3) I already own lbp, and have limited hdd space, my nephew is getting a ps3 later this year, would i be able to keep my shiny disc and give him my download code? seeing as he’ll have 3 times more space than i? or will sony slap the back of my legs?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 3:47 pm by James Thorpe
Hi Hawkboi -
1. I can’t fully predict the price of the service in a years time, for example, but there no imediate plans to change the price for the near future.
2. yes, minis and PSOne titles will be transferrable to your PSP (if you ask nicely enough for one!)
3. the LBP download is only for the PlayStation Plus member, you could always give him the disc and upgrade your HDD (really easy to do)

Could you please answer our questions about Cross Game voice chat? Don’t ignore them please…
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 4:06 pm by James Thorpe
The current features of PlayStation Plus are those listed in my blog post – Games & special offers, full game trial and automatic downloads. We understand that many of you are asking for a cross-game chat feature, we said during our presentation that the service will evolve over time but I can’t guarantee anything at this time.
