As I announced in the last blog post, Retro City Rampage is coming to PS3 and PS Vita! But wait, I have even more great news…
Last week in Toronto, we held an amazing event called PlayStation <3 Canada to promote and support Canadian indie game developers. In attendance were us here at Vblank Entertainment, Drinkbox Studios (Tales From Space: About a Blob), Queasy Games (Sound Shapes), ][ Games (Dyad) and more. It was a blast! For me, the highlight was finally giving fans a chance to see and play the PS Vita version of Retro City Rampage for the first time. I’ve been going on for a while about how amazing it looks on the PS Vita, and now you can see what it looks like for yourself.
While the PS Vita version of Retro City Rampage boasts everything that its PS3 counterpart does, I had fun making a few tweaks to tailor the experience to the handheld. While the PS3 version supports tube TV simulation filters which curve the screen and add scanlines (allowing you to play on an LCD TV with the feel of an old CRT), the PS Vita version supports classic dot-matrix simulation filters giving it a heavy dose of Game Boy/Game Gear nostalgia. I absolutely love it and it’s my filter of choice when playing the game. If the LCD grid simulation alone isn’t retro enough for you, you can also change the colour mode. The colour modes let you make Retro City Rampage even more retro with options such as “Brick Handheld” (yellow-green monochrome) and “Virtual Burn” (all red), “Blurst Processor,” “SEE=64,” “PC DOS EGA” and a dozen more (also available in the PS3 version).
Those of you who are worried that the characters might be too small on the PS Vita screen needn’t be! It supports two screen modes. The standard mode designed specifically for the PS Vita scales everything up and ensures that the characters and everything else are easy to see. Alternatively, the second mode uses smaller pixels but displays the entire 16:9 widescreen image and supports the TV/arcade screen borders of the PS3 counterpart, so it’s entirely up to you.
The PS Vita’s touchscreen also adds a nice…touch. RCR is a love letter to the days of the d-pad, for core gamers who grew up with controllers and buttons – but that doesn’t mean that the touchscreen can’t be used where it makes sense. It really makes the menus, minigames and shops faster and more convenient to navigate, going hand in hand with RCR’s overall design philosophy, which is to emit nostalgia while still catering to our evolved expectations of games. This extends from the added touchscreen functionality to the game design and tutorials. For example, you won’t need to flip through a manual or call a tips hotline to figure out what to do. But if you’re an absolute purist, you can still play the game 100% with the buttons.
I’m willing to bet that if you have a PS Vita, you also have a PS3. Well, you’re going to be exceptionally excited to hear about just how good friends the PS3 and PS Vita versions are. If you’re like me, you want the best of both worlds. You want to be able to play your favourite games on your nice TV from the sofa, but still take them with you everywhere you go. With Retro City Rampage, your dreams have come true! It supports continuous play so you can play the game on your sofa, save it, and continue where you left off from your PS Vita (and vice versa).
One question you’re going to ask is “WHEN!?” I don’t have a fixed release date just yet, but it’ll be out as soon as possible. I’m fixing the final bugs and working around the clock to get it into your hands as soon as I can. Keep your eyes peeled here on the PlayStation.Blog!

Heh, I do like scanlines. I have them in my own game projects and also switched on in PS3 retro games that support them like Final Fight and Street Fighter III. There’s something just too ‘clean’ about modern displays when viewing classic low res pixels.

This will really tax the vitas hardware, looks absolute carp. Mildy interesting if its priced at 99p but i can’t see that.

Looks awesome, will definitely get this retro goodness on the Vita, I did once play GTA II on the gameboy color and enjoyed so this should be a perfect fit.

This game looks great and it’s good to hear it’s coming to the Vita (and that it is easy to develop for!).
Love the sound of the graphic filters too and reckon it looks great on the Vita, a real cool old school mix of action!
The continuos play feature is good, but only if there is a buy the game on both PS3 and Vita deal, like Hustle Kings and MotorStorm RC.
As I wouldn’t want to have to pay full price for the same game twice.
Either way I’ll just be buying the Vita version on day 1… whenever that is??
Can’t wait for some RCR Vita action!!

Really looking forward to playing this. Are you able to clarify if this will be a case of ‘buy one version and get the other version free’ as with the likes of Motorstorm RC?

Looking really forward for the vita-version.
It probably won’t be a “Buy 1 get 2″-Deal (both ps3 + vita version), but it would be cool if there was a bundle to save some money.
Then I would go for both versions instead of only Vita.

Could we get some clarification as to wether or not you get BOTH the Vita and PS3 versions if you make ONE purchase of the game, or if you have to buy the versions separetely?
If you’d get both, that would be GREAT, and really be a boon for the Vita. If not… well, then the whole thing is pretty dumb, and will probably only spite gamers more than excite them.

This game looks super cool. After 7 years of work, I’d say you deserve my money.

This totally makes up for the lack of post launch Vita games, especially with those hard core graphics!

Watching the video again makes me realise I really am looking forward to playing this. Certainly appeals far more to me than yet another ALL-GREY FPS or another tedious entry in the Resident Evil series. And those graphics are lovely and show a lot of actual care in the pixel placement. I’ve really been missing that in an age of 3D (where the computer ends up choosing where and what color the pixels are on your screen) and cheap looking Flash-style ‘HD’ sprites. I had hoped the creation of the PSP Minis brand would have brought a lot more pixel art back into the market but even then there’s so very few actual pixelled games and the rest are the usual blurry, hastily-photoshopped crud you get everywhere else.

I’ve been patiently waiting for this to eventually release.
I like the fact that it tips the hat off, to games of yesteryear. It even includes the original NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dam level, where you have to disarm the bombs etc. Obviously a lot of work has gone into this GEM & it’s a day 1 purchase. I’m more excited by this title than anything else released this year.
Great work guys & I hope you release further titles like this, maybe a sequel including different retro titles!
PS3 version for me

@2 @herotoozero Totally agree, it does look rubbish. Better games on iOS for £0.59.
I wonder why this games hasn’t been made as “minis”? Can anyone enlighten me why it has been made as Vita native and advertised as such?

Those people that don’t like the look of the game clearly don’t get what this game is about and therefore it is t for them. Which is fine!
I love the look and style and retro action, so hope to hear a release date soon!
Wonder what the price will be? Don’t really know how big the game is in terms of hours of play etc but getting the two versions for the same price as one is maybe too good to be true. It’d certainly help the vita but I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more for a double purchase deal.
I suppose games like Hustle Kings and MotorStorm are Sony exclusives so they have more scope to offer a duel download. RCR is multi platform, so maybe it would need Sony to offer the developer some incentive to do a deal or Plus offer?

@ FBZ1501
According to this interview: http://goo.gl/xNE7s the game will launch for $15, so should be £9.99 or less, hopefully! It was originally slated for May release but that’s obviously slipped
This interview has more information on the game: http://goo.gl/D1qwa
Kind regards

@Catkiller1
£9.99 ? Lol.
I say a game like this should be playable on PSP/PS3/Vita (read “minis”) and priced £2.49 max. But obviously Sony and some customers live in a world where iOS with its great titles and prices does not exist…

@FBZ1501
People who don’t like it – won’t get it at any price.
But, let’s looks at things objectively. Why isn’t this game a “minis” title? Technically there should be no restrictions to make it one (just look at some great minis games on PSN).
The only reason, which comes to mind, why it’s a separate PS3/Vita SKU is the greed of developer/Sony. And that’s where the customers should say “No!”.
As someone who owns plenty of Sony consoles and spends substantial amount of money on PSN, I shall definitely vote with my wallet against such rip-offs.

@ MONTENERO
The quality that has been put into this title, to say it should be a mini, is an insult! You wouldn’t cram that amount of detail etc into a mini. Some minis have decent enough quality, but the gameplay length is limited.
Graphics don’t make a game great, gameplay does & this title oozes with it! To have a game with parodies to retro classics, is a great idea & i’m personally looking forward to it! It’s not really the greed of developer SONY either, as originally this was XBLA & Wii only! I’m glad it’e releasing on PS3 so I can experience it & i’ll be happy with a £9.99 or less price tag too.
Just because you don’t like the look of it, doesn’t mean that it will be rubbish, again it’s your opinion & I respect that, but i’m looking forward to it as it’s right up my nostalgia street!

15 dollars is ok IF we get both versions.
Don’t expect us to pay 30 dollars to have both versions….
36
Posted on 22 May, 2012 at 5:03 pm by Catkiller1
@ Klart
$30 dollars for both titles would be ridiculous to say the least! Should have the same concept as Motorstorm. I don’t own a VITA, but as a VITA version has been announced, then it should be included with the PS3 purchase & vice versa!
I don’t think too many members would be happy, if you have to pay seperately!
Again, if you don’t like the look of it or think that the price tag would be too high, then avoid it, as it’s obviously not for you. Doesn’t mean i’m wrong for wanting to purchase it, as it appeals to me & we all have different tastes etc!

Well I was hoping for something like £6.99 tbh but £9.99 is more bearable if you get both the PS3 and Vitas versions. Otherwise it’s gonna cost nearly £20 to play the game over two consoles which is just silly and I can’t imagine any one paying for that priviledge.
As for those comments that this should be a Mini… RCR is clearly a well developed proper full price PSN title, the retro graphics does not mean this is a basic game like most minis are.
It’s interesting that there has been a few recent continuous play games advertised MGS, the new Sly Copper I think… But it is never mentioned but Sony due seem to assume that customers will be prepared to pay twice for the title, just for the continuous play feature!
I think if this is the case then it’s another error by Sony!
Hopefully RCR will set an example and other good value for those who want to use the continuous play feature.
