San Diego Comic-Con doesn’t want for distractions – famous graphic novelists greet their fans, tables are lined with uber-limited-edition collectables, and cosplayers roam the halls by the thousands.
When I learned that Okami HD at their booth, all of those attractions quickly dropped in importance; I knew where my Comic-Con would kick off.
Mere seconds after the doors of the San Diego Convention Center opened for business, Capcom’s Tristan Corbett handed me a PlayStation Move controller and I beheld Japanese Sun Goddess-turned-canine Amaterasu in full HD glory for the first time.
Not all HD remakes are created equal, but Hexa Drive’s effort clearly isn’t just a soulless re-processing. With the PS3′s hardware muscle to play with, they’re working to improve draw distance and load times over the PS2 original. The cel-shaded visuals up-rez quite nicely, with the game’s iconic bold, black outline strokes popping off the HD display. All cutscenes have been fully recreated, and areas of the game that the team felt weren’t up to snuff were re-textured by hand.
Corbett informed me that this is the first HD remake that Capcom will release outside of Japan featuring full 1080p HD. That high-end resolution, coupled with the new 16:9 aspect ratio, helps Okami’s insane level of visual intricacy stand out significantly more than on the PS2. The game lavishes layers upon layers of effects: whilst approaching a seaside cave, I noticed violet mist pouring forth from a foul portal as wind visibly blows off the sea. Bold lines express the speed of dog deity at a canter, as vibrant flora spring forth from the soil underneath her life-giving paws.
The team even lets you play with filter effects in this version; opt for “Heavy,” and the sky appears to have been painted on a rough scroll, making things pop with a timeless storybook look. It may be cliché to say, but I can’t help but think that Okami HD is a more pure expression of the vision that Clover Studio had when they created the game in 2006.
Okami HD’s enhanced visuals only represent half of the new package. This PS3 exclusive also supports PlayStation Move controls, with a Navigation Controller. Those that struggled with the thumbstick when painting with Amaterasu’s Celestial Brush may find salvation in motion control – hold the T-button to bring up the canvas, then press the Move to deploy ink as you sketch with Ammy’s paint power. After a few tries, I was rejuvenating dying cherry blossoms with tight circles and power slashing through guarding enemies via a well-placed horizontal line. Of course, Dualshock 3 controls are supported, and the controls are just as you may remember.
I tried to sneak a peek at the PSN Trophy list, but Capcom had not yet implemented them into this build of Okami HD. Fortunately, Corbett promised to share the final Trophy list here on PlayStation.Blog, and it’s been confirmed that there will be a Platinum up for grabs.
Okami HD is coming exclusively to PSN this fall. Got any questions? We’ll aim to address them in a future post.

My question is could we get a narrower date rather than Fall? I’m looking really forward to this and would at least know the month I could get more excited about

So looking forward to it! Hope they can implement the credits in this version, the original team wasn’t credited at all on the Wii port…
which is a shame. A great game made by great people.
Okami HD raises my hopes for a Viewtiful Joe HD! That would be absolutely amazeballs

Okami HD looks like a good proper HD remake….
@ darylsdn
Yep a Viewtiful Joe HD remake would be awesome.
In fact both should be released on the Vita too!

I’ve loved this game ever since it was released on the PS2, so thank you for remastering it. The original one never got the attention it deserved from the big public, hopefully this will adress that somewhat.
Few questions
1) Some HD remasters suffer from “dated” controls. I don’t mean the control scheme, but the responsiveness of it all. We never really notice it improves, because it improves gradually. But when suddenly jumping back a generation, it’s often noticable. Will this be looked at as well, other than updated draw distances (which are also great by the way).
2) Not really about the game, but can we see a release of the OST outside of Japan? Okami had (or I should say, “has”) a gorgeous soundtrack, and only being able to listen to it ingame after unlocking it was a bit disappointing. Especially considering how deliciously good it sounds.
Thanks for working on the remake, many gamers have been asking for it, and we’re very glad to see this gem remade.

I should add: When I talk about the controls, I mean on a regular controller. Playstation Move support, while nice to have, is not something I’m particulary worried about.

I would love that Capcom release that japanese Limited Edition in Europe too. If we at least don’t see the physical format, against my will, i will not buy.

Any news on a release date so I can book time off work to enjoy it uninterrupted? Also, could someone get on Capcom’s case and let them know we want a retail copy? Cos we CLEARLY wont get the CE over here. So just the normal edition would be nice. Its one of the best games of all time and deserves more than an allocated space on my HDD.

A physical copy would be dandy alongside any artwork and what-not. The soundtrack would surely go down well with many but doubtful to see a release. I’m glad I imported the latter a long time ago. Very pricey but very much worth it.

Can’t wait for the game. I just want a release date so I can dedicate a long weekend to playing it.
I am happy it is 1080p and 60fps would be even better.
@ runicdagaz
The OST was been out of print nearly 5 years.
I bought it on ebay for 70 Euroe. Pricy but worth it. 207 songs on 5 cds. I have been listening to it all evening.

@Lucreto
Oh, you have it, nice.
I didn’t start looking for it until after it was out of print, and for the time being I’m on a budget. :/
I just think a limited reprint of the OST would be nice for the fans who missed out on it, and I’d rather have the money go to them instead of some random person on ebay. More chance to see more Okami in the furure. :p

As much as I would love a disc version of it with a nice hardback book of the art from Okami, soundtrack, snowglobe, Okami plushie et al. I am more than satisfied that at least it’s been given the HD treatment AND it’s back on the playstation.
I still have my ps2 disc of the game as well as the original strategy guide.
This game was stunning and original in the way that Flower and Journey are. Okami was such a lovely experience those that haven’t played it you really are in for a treat. Even despite the beauty of the game and the emotional experience I had playing it – it’s one of the best games ever made…if only more games were like Okami

Thanks for the update, I simply cannot wait for this to be released.
I’ve been gaming since the days of the Atari 2600 and have no hesitation in saying that Okami is one of, if not the greatest games of all time. Criminally overlooked by many, a PSN release can only be a good thing in terms of exposure.
Agree with posters above, a special edition would be amazing.
Also, any news on sound specs – I want to hear me some DTS victory howls!
And will there ever be an Okamiden port for PS?
So many questions – roll on “fall”.

I just tripped and fell, so does that mean the game is out now?
When is fall? I am only aware of the 12 months of the year and 4 seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter)and fall isn’t one of them! Has a new one been invented?

Graftonator #17: “Fall” is autumn if I’m not mistaken. I don’t know why they used the American term for the EU blog post.
Like others have mentioned, I too want to see a retail copy released, not just digital. Puts me off getting it altogether, as I prefer physical boxed copies of my games.
Really glad to see this is getting HD treatment though.

This isn’t CAPCOM related but HD related. Looks like Yakuza 1 & 2 are to be released within a HD collection at the end of the year. The info was leaked & then pulled within minutes. Should ring true, as the Hitman Collection was leaked & is now official!

@5 “Come on capcom why can’t we have resident evil remake and zero on psn instead of this rubbish.”
For a second, I though we have american redneck on the board. That’s the best example of why Japanese devs are hesitant of releasing their artful games in the west. Luckily, tons of people love this masterpiece of a game.

this game needs the vita, not the move (if you’d ever fought against blockhead grande you can imagine why)
