What impact will the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s integrated speaker have on gameplay?
The DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s integrated speaker lets inventive game developers immerse players more fully in the game world. In the example of Killzone: Shadow Fall, audio diaries collected in the campaign mode will be broadcast though the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s integrated speaker. We anticipate that developers will devise other interesting ways to use this feature.

Has the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s internal motion sensor been upgraded since the DUALSHOCK 3 controller?
Yes, the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s upgraded SIXAXIS® motion sensor is noticeably more responsive compared to the DUALSHOCK 3 controller in supported titles. For example, the PS4 edition of Flower features more responsive motion controls, enabling players to more easily guide flower petals. The DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s SIXAXIS motion sensor is even precise enough for text input. In this optional mode, PS4 users can “point” at different letters using the DUALSHOCK 4 controller to form words.

I’ve heard the DUALSHOCK 4 controller features “enhanced rumble.” What does that mean? What’s the benefit?
The DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s multiple vibration motors give PS4 games a greater degree of expression and immersion.

I’ve heard that the DUALSHOCK 4 controller features less “latency” than other controllers. What does this mean?
All wireless devices experience some form of latency, a tiny delay between, say, pushing a button and seeing an action performed onscreen. Thanks to new technology and hardware optimizations, the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s wireless connectivity experiences less latency overall than the PS3 system’s DUALSHOCK 3 controller.

Can the DUALSHOCK 4 controller connect to a PC?

PS Vita Remote Play

What is Remote Play?
Remote Play will enable users to stream their PS4 gameplay to their PS Vita system via WiFi, freeing up the television for other uses. SCEE expects that most PS4 titles will support Remote Play unless the title requires a special peripheral like PlayStation Camera.

When will Remote Play work best?
Remote Play will work best when the PS Vita system is located within the same WiFi network where the PS4 system is connected. We also recommend that the PS4 system be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used and that the PS Vita system be within close proximity of the WiFi access point so that the connection is free of interference.

Can Remote Play work outside the user’s home network?
We strongly recommend that Remote Play be used within the same WiFi network where the PS4 system is connected. Remote Play may or may not work over a wide area network. For Remote Play to function over a wide area network, a robust and stable WiFi connection and broadband Internet connection is required, and the local area network where the PS4 system is connected must be configured to permit the PS Vita system to access the PS4 system.

Remote Play

How does Remote Play using PS4 and PS Vita systems improve on the current system between PS3 and PS Vita systems?
Remote Play between PS4 and PS Vita systems leverages Gaikai’s proprietary game streaming technology. The PS4 system supports this technology on a system level in order to reduce the burden for developers. All activities performed during Remote Play will occur on the PS4 system, such as purchasing add-ons, earning Trophies, and saving game progress.

Does the PS4 system have to be on to take advantage of Remote Play?
Yes. But the PS Vita system can remotely wake up the PS4 system when in standby mode as long as this feature is activated in the Power Settings menu on PS4.

Can I use Remote Play via 3G?
No.

How will Cross Play function between PS4 and PS Vita systems?
As with the PS3 system, supported titles will allow PS4 and PS Vita users to play together in the same game via online multiplayer (PlayStation Plus required for online multiplayer).

Are there any other cross-functional capabilities between PS Vita and PS4 users?
Players can voice chat or text chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems using the Party application, even during gameplay. Also, users can browse and compare each other’s Trophies. Text message can also be sent/received between PS Vita and PS4 systems.

Fantastic! VERY informative!
Sony yet again, destroy the competition.
Long.

A lot of people are going to be angry if developers dont decide to support steering wheels and other accessories people spent a lot of money on. (including me)

AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA

SERIOUSLY!?!?!?

RE: The guy above me

Wow.

Oh my.

Please say that was a mistake?

NoddingPenguin 30 October, 2013 @ 5:42 pm   5

The fact you can’t share to YouTube REALLY sucks, and it’s incredibly disappointing. One of my most anticipated features (share button) will barely get any use from me as you can only share to Facebook. Pleaaaaaaaaaase tell me YouTube support is coming in future.

supersmith2500 30 October, 2013 @ 5:43 pm   6

Very useful FAQ. Say will apps Netflix, LoveFilm and YouTube be available day one on PS4?

shanethegooner 30 October, 2013 @ 5:44 pm   7

No media server support? Wow.

No Audio CDs either the Audio situation has got to be some kind of insanity, Or a way to push Music Unlimited Subscriptions

What features will or wont be available in North America isnt relevant when posting on the EU Blog. I’d rather hear which features will be available or wont be available for the EU regions.
Video Unlimited available on day 1, for all regions or just the 2 regions which have access to it at the moment on PS3?
And where’s Gaikai, i dont see it mentioned at all. When will this be available in the EU?

karanda_uk 30 October, 2013 @ 5:47 pm   10

Could you download the 1.5 firmware pre-UK launch from the PS website to prevent launch day waiting?

RE: Person above me.

^We need an answer to that^

Lot’s of great info there but i’m quite disappointed by the lack of cd/mp3 playback – which wouldn’t be so bad if there was media server support.. seems like an odd decision.

zalwelgoedgaan 30 October, 2013 @ 5:51 pm   13

Playing racing/fighting/puzzle games on the PS3 with your own music is awesome. Music Unlimited, despite its name, does not have all the music in the world. How is that even a valid replacement?

Oh, and Sony still sells soundtracks of their first party games. Rain, Puppeteer, Beyond, Sly Cooper 4 etc. So you can listen them on your PS3, a machine from 2006, but not on your PS4, a machine from this year?

I’m sure some pathetic fanboys will come in here and defend this, but the fact is that Sony is going BACKWARDS. Why even bother forcing Music Unlimited on us? Correct me if I’m wrong, but you need a credit card for that, right? Most countries in Europe aren’t driven by credit cards.

Nevertheless, you’re supposed to move forward with systems, this is not how you do it.

Huge swing and a miss with the music thing. Custom soundtracks is probably THE biggest request for PS3 over the last 6 years, and to not only restrict that to Music Unlimited but to totally remove MP3 playback altogether is baffling. Really disappointing.

Other than that, I don’t think the whole cache thing will be 100% clear until a step-by-step explanation is offered. If I play Killzone for an hour and change to Knack straight after, is that 100GB gone or what?

Other than that, it’s all good I guess. Lack of online game-controlling and suspend/resume feature is a bit of a letdown, but understandable I suppose. Just can’t help but feel the amazing-ness of the PS4 is undermined by two or three glaring upsets.

Neural_Net 30 October, 2013 @ 5:53 pm   15

Why isn’t the KIllzone mega bundle available to order on your own webstore at sony.se?
I thought it was a european wide release?

Emily-Haines 30 October, 2013 @ 5:54 pm   16

It’s baffling to exclude DNLA and MP3 support. It’s bad enough that audio CD can’t also be played on a PS4. Not deal breakers for me, but still baffling nonetheless.

Seems when they said PS4 was all about the the games, they meant it!

“Will I be able to play MP3s on the PS4 system?”
“No.”

This will be made available with a future System Software Update, am I right?
I swear to god Sony it better be.

Can you show us the new PlayStation Dynamic Menu on a video?

vonhammer 30 October, 2013 @ 5:55 pm   19

“Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on the PS4 system?”

“No, this feature is not supported on PS4.”

Needs to be a priority.

“Does PS4 include a music visualizer feature?”
“No.”

“Will I be able to play MP3s on the PS4 system?”
“No.”

I wish I was allowed to write what I’m thinking. So PS3 > PS4 in terms of OS functionality. Total joke.

Oh and changing our PSN ID. Yes, I know you’ve said no, but Jesus Christ can I please give you some money to make it happen.

ctrl + F then replace all “North America” with Europe was too much trouble for you huh? or are we actually in North America and this is all some conspiracy.

Also stopping us from using our own MP3 is stupid and lame

“Am I able to buy PlayStation Store content from other regions?
We recommend that people buy from the PlayStation Store in the region in which they signed up in order to ensure the best experience and customer support.”

I’m not reading a noooooo

Anubi-kun 30 October, 2013 @ 5:59 pm   22

So I’m assuming since they took out all Audio playback outside of Music Unlmited i can’t hook up my external and watch Videos from it either?

Emily-Haines 30 October, 2013 @ 6:00 pm   23

Interesting note…the FAQ thus far has only said MP3 files can’t be played back on a PS4. Which still leaves AAC and FLAC files in the air…

Really great article, should help to stop people asking the same questions all the time!

I really hope that the Official Wireless Stereo Headset functionality is added very soon, as I just bought one recently with the intention of also being able to use it on my PS4 (when it arrives).

Ehm… The PS4 system will retail for Euros €399.99 / GBP £349.99 (RRP)
Mmmm….The PS4 system will retail for USD $399.99 (MSRP) in the United States and CAD $399.99 (MSRP)

Right now 30/10/2013: EUR/USD=1,3779..
Some maths: 399.00 USD = 289.565 EUR
399.00 EUR = 549.815 USD

Yeah, it’s raining money.

So glad I read this before I preordered a PS4, think I’ll stick with my PS3 for a few years, cause this seems to be a step backwards

I mean:
No MP3 or CD support
Only 4 controllers can connect to 1 console
PlayStation+ required to play online
Among other things

I fully agree with NoddingPenguin. Only being able to share with Facebook sucks entirely. I dont care for Facebook, I use twitter more. Sony you’re f&&&ing up if you wont give that to your users. Especially since no one cares for twitch or ustream as much as youtube.

It shouldn’t be all about streams. It should be about users. User’s saved content and their clips that they wish to put together. Youtube gives us that, please don’t take it away.

If you didn’t pre order the ps4 when can I get it in stores?

“Yes, the Music Unlimited streaming service will allow you to listen to music while you play PS4 games. A subscription to Music Unlimited is required. Get full details here.
Does PS4 include a music visualizer feature?
No.
Will I be able to play MP3s on PS4?
No”

What is that Sony? Trying to force your customers into the Music Unlimited service that one has to pay what, 50 Euro a year for?

I thought Sony/PS4 was about choices and listening to their customers. This clearly is NOT!!!

I may freaking hope you’re patching MP3 support into that PS4 firmware ASAP because this is borderline retarded.

You must be reading these comments and you must have expected this kind of backlash to the omission of basic features. I’m on Reddit right now and there are people seriously considering opting for the Xbox just so they can listen to their god damn music. Let alone the streaming of content from a media server. It’s madness.

I’d suggest throwing everything out the window and announcing a patch to re-introduce what made the PS3 so good in the first place. I can’t imagine the kind of logistical nightmare it was that forced you to remove these features (please god tell me it was more than to just peddle Music Unlimited) but it’s the kind of basic functionality we’d expect from a machine supposed to last us into the 2020s. The hard drive thing worries me. Can I still hook up my hard drive and run video off it, or is the restricted audio playback going to get in the way of that? Unbelievable.

Will 3D Blu-Ray movie playback be supported?

So PS3 does not support custom soundtrack, you implemented it on Vita, but now PS4 is also not going to support our own custom music, unless it’s through Music Unlimited?? Why allow it on Vita, but not on PS4??

Probably this a question already answered, but to re-confirm.

Will all disc based games be region free?

I Mean will I be able to play a disc from Asia region in my US, EU console and viceversa?

.mkv support? Oh man, you’ve not only not moved forward here but you’ve strangled everything out that made the PS3 such a centralised media hub. Thanks for being #4theGamers Sony, but we do like to do more than just play games, and now you’re basically forcing me to find a way around all these sudden impositions. Netflix available at launch? LoveFilm?

If anyone with information sees this, can you please tell me whether or not all games will have a platinum trophy? on PS3 they were determined by visual style, difficulty and length, the idea of choosing whether or not to include a platinum trophy depending on visual style is ridiculous.

“Generally, PS4 will support Bluetooth keyboards. However, special function buttons that serve as PS3 wireless controller buttons, available on certain products such as PS3 wireless keyboard, cannot be used. These buttons include: △, □, SELECT, START, L3, L2, L1, R1, R2, R3, ×, ○, and PS button.”

I really hope you’ll change this with a patch later on, since I’m guessing that my Logitech Harmony Adapter won’t work with the PS4, and I really, really want it to.

I can’t believe I read the whole thing even though I know each detail. I am very excited but please…. Anything for India launch date please! This is the 4th post I’m asking this in. I want a PS4. Just tell me when in India and how much. Request from an obsessive gamer.

I was planning to give my PS3 to my brother to Christmas, but … I was expecting expanded media file support (flac, mkv etc) and what will I get? Nothing … No media server support, no mkv support, no flac support and … no mp3 support? I thought Sony was aiming for media hub too not just gaming console as it was mostly with the PS3 too … I keep all my CD collection in mp3′s and also converted about 40% of my blu-ray collection to mkv … I’m sorry, pre-order canceled (honestly). I will wait for updates to see what’s up with future system update. This way, I’m sure I will play Lightning Returns on my PS3 …

hmmm….

So we cant back up are saves etc if/when we change our HDD?

also….Does the mono headset have a mute button on it?

Voodoo341 30 October, 2013 @ 6:18 pm   41

It’s absolutely staggering the PS4 cannot play a simple DVD straight out of the box. This is online DRM by deceit. No background music unless you subscribe to a really poor Music Unlimited service. That’s just simply terrible.

Can you play back .avi or .mp4 files on the system? If not, I’m just gonna have to cancel my pre-order and cry. Probably pick up Beyond.

Very good, and informative, everything we need to know.
Tho i still have questions.
I saw a video of a guy with a PS4 controller unboxing, and he tested if it worked on a PS3, the thing is, it worked if it was connected via cable but not wireless so what can we say about the connectivity between PS4 Controller > PS3 System?

Thanks for the FAQ!

leaves only one question open to germans:

Will the following bundle be available at launch on 29.11.2013 in germany:

PlayStation 4 – Console incl. Killzone: Shadow Fall + 2 DualShock 4 Wireless Controller + Camera

???

Seems that no retailer knows for sure…

Cant wait for 29.11.2013, booked my 3 week off work trip to the Playstation World :D

no matter what hayzink and golwar spam this blog with every day because they have no socia llife,

this is inacceptable the ps4 cannot play our own mp3s and flac files in our games and that european games are 70€ when USA games are only $60 i cancelled my ps4 pre-orders and am switching to xbox one now for titanfall mainly because of the idiot people who run this blog but also because of horrible decisions from sony with the custom soundtracks you ruined it.

randellaUK 30 October, 2013 @ 6:21 pm   46

Do we have a choice or can we broadcast to both ustream and twitch also will we get a PS4 UI video to accompany the run up to the launch?

I should finish reading all that by the time the PS4 comes out :D

bravo9zero 30 October, 2013 @ 6:23 pm   48

No custom music using your own MP3s is a joke!!
We’ve been requesting this feature since 2006!

I’m still getting my PS4 day one, but this is very disappointing :(

Fitzmonkey_Devil 30 October, 2013 @ 6:23 pm   49

Does the PS4 support playback of .mp4 and .avi or other video files via USB or be copied to internal storage for playback?

No music player? no audio playback whatsoever unless you subscribe to your payed service, absolute joke! Use my ps3 as my main multimedia centre and this is just so backwards and penny pinching. All the rest I could handle but this has seriously made me reconsider my ps4 purchase. Can’t believe I may be forced back to Microsoft…
