PS3 System Software Update v3.40 And PlayStation Plus Available Later Today

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to your PS3 via firmware update to continue to try and bring you the best entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) is available available later today, adding the ability to purchase a PlayStation Plus subscription, improved connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP system simultaneously with PS3 – v3.40 and adding PlayStation Plus compatibility for the people that own both a PS3 and PSP.

PlayStation Plus

Here are a few highlights from the new PS3 firmware update (v3.40):

  • PlayStation Plus: PSN users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus which is a new premium subscription service on PSN that lets you expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Don’t forget though, all PSN users will continue to have free access to PSN’s existing and brand new features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will also gain access to an exclusive set of gaming features, content and functionality.
    • Games & Special Offers – access to great games every month worth over £200 a year, exclusive discount on PlayStation Store and early access to demos and beta trails.
    • Exclusive Content – download and keep loads of new and exclusive premium avatars, dynamic themes and game add-ons.
    • Full Game Trial – Try full games each month for a limited period before you decide whether to buy them.
    • Automatic Download – Set your PS3 to automatically wake up, download and install all of your game updates, new game demos and even download the latest system software. All without you lifting a finger.
    • Limited Special Offer – To celebrate the launch of PlayStation Plus we are also offering users the chance to get hold of LittleBigPlanet completely free. Simply sign up for a 1 year membership between now (29th) and the 3rd August 2010 and a downloadable copy of the award winning PS3 game is yours to keep forever.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
  • PlayStation Store Five Star Rating Support: Users can now rate PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

As well as the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PSN application will be made available on Facebook. This builds on the previous connection with Trophies and the ability to share purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PSN and Facebook accounts with this new application, which allows you to display your PSN profile on Facebook, send a PSN friend request to friends on Facebook and add the PSN application tab to your Facebook Profile.

We’re very excited to be able to provide you with continued system software upgrades, which ensure your PS3 and PSP systems remain compelling offerings for years to come with no additional investment from you. Also, I can’t update my PS3 to 3.40 yet :(

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:43

Should both be available now for you, hope you enjoy it all

Yay, firmware updates are always fun :) Any idea when the update will take place because it’s already 10pm?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:46

Hi, both Plus and 3.4 should be live now, hope you enjoy them both

Carnivius_Prime 28 June, 2010 @ 22:10

Hm, video editor, photo gallery and ability to rate Ps store content all sound pretty good.

This says ‘later today’ It’s already quite late in the day here being just gone 10pm. Do you mean the Tuesday?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:48

Hi, yes, this was supposed to go live at 5am so not sure why it went out last night, sorry for the confusion, both Plus and 3.4 are live now (tues)

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:07

Apparently there was a last min change in timing while I was tucked up in bed and the firware went live at midnight UK time, hopefully you already have this by now anyway, enjoy

Cool Features!

Awesome! Some great features – happily subscribing for *additional* content, rather than paying for basic functionality like some other services.

Great service :)

Carnivius_Prime 28 June, 2010 @ 22:11

I just asking cos I’d really like to have my ps3 finished updating firmware befooooore my new game comes tomorrow morning in the mail that i’ve been waiting for since last week (some big mix up occured so had to re-order). Don’t make me wait any longer grr

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:50

Hi, Plus will be there with the firmware update. they both went live about 5am this morning

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:07

slight last min change and they both actually went live at midnight Uk time last night

KC-alpha-14 28 June, 2010 @ 22:12

You forgot to put the Cross game chat bit in..

mentalmonkeyv 28 June, 2010 @ 22:13

will the update and playstation+ be available at midnight

Rating system and expanded FB connection seems great!

PS+ could be good, would have prefered the 3 months free that the US is getting cos I already have LBP so I’m in no rush to sign up straight away. Will be when I have more money though.

This firmware update sounds brilliant, I can’t wait. With this and PSN+, tomorrow’s gonna be great.

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:52

haha, hope you enjoy it all, cheers

Handige_Harry 28 June, 2010 @ 22:16

something that will make people bye a Playstation for:

PlayStation Store Five Star Rating Support

herotoozero 28 June, 2010 @ 22:17

is that later today GMT i.e tonight in U.K?

i have 40 squid in my wallet waiting to be spent, give us an E.TA Mr.Thorpe :)

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:54

Hi, Its live now, sorry for the confusion this post was set to go live at 5am rather than last night. Hope you enjoy them both

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:09

oops, my mistake, just been told there was a last min change and it actually went live at midnight last night, hopefully you have it already, chees

Wow, video editing direct on the PS3? That’s pretty awesome! And a hell of a coincidence… I was just thinking the other day it would be cool to be able to edit videos (in basic form, of course) on the PS3 and upload them direct to YouTube, rather than having to move them to the PC and do it from there.

For me, that’s better than the Plus service!

Cracking job, PS3 firmware peeps!

Available later as in midnight?

Cloudedpaul 28 June, 2010 @ 22:19

you say this is just some of the highlights, care to tell us the rest?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:55

Those are all the main features above and you can see a full list of the changes when you download the firmware. If you need more details of the Plus service then please check out the previous blog post on Plus which has loads of detail, cheers

Wow, pretty good update. adds a bunch of new things, nice job :D

Will the PSP update add anything? My psp hasn’t had any good updates in a while.

Ravenblade86 28 June, 2010 @ 22:20

Looks like a rather nice firmware update :) I’m wondering if the five star rating system will only be available on the PS3 store though? Would like to be able to rate my comics and those are only on the PSP store or Media Go.

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 08:59

Hi, the rating system is currently only for the PS3 Store. the guys are still working on developing the PSP and the PSP Store but I don’t have any details of this yet. Will let you know when I do

herotoozero 28 June, 2010 @ 22:21

stop being a berk, it’s a great addition. I nearly always gauge my XBL purchases on the rating system if i’m not sure about a game.

It might be at 11pm, because that would be 3pm Pacific time.

Super--Brad 28 June, 2010 @ 22:22

Not a bad update, can’t wait to get my hands on it for myself xD

That’s pretty awesome!

Wasn’t this ment to come out tommoro, I mean they said 29th, its 29th in NZ, but its still 28th in europe?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:10

Hi, confused me this morning to!! Last min change to the firmware timings so it went live at midnight UK time last night

Tramain1987 28 June, 2010 @ 22:24

this new update = GOON!

Carnivius_Prime 28 June, 2010 @ 22:24

@16 it’s a good feature. There’s several games I’ve bought where I could give a low rating too after feeling somewhat ripped off.

FatTrousers 28 June, 2010 @ 22:25

Oh wah!? Did you just mention video editing? I know a LOT of people who’d be interested in this. Store ratings too? Oh yeah!!

Today? it’s the 28th

awesome update. really like the 5 star rating for store content.. This Thing makes the PSN feel a lot more like a community… Now let us meet up easy-er with my friends through cross game chat and the PS3 will be perfect!

Carnivius_Prime 28 June, 2010 @ 22:27

put in a feature where i can automatically disable every voice chat feature in every game without having to go through all the menus or having to mute everyone before every damn match (the only thing i hate in uncharted 2) and then the ps3 will be perfect…

Balflearspgc 28 June, 2010 @ 22:28

I wonder when this comes out, will it be this night or tomorrow evening?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:12

was midnight UK time last night, hope you have it now though and are enjoying the new features

Balflearspgc 28 June, 2010 @ 22:29

I’m talking about the PS Store update :)

Aren’t we going to have CROSS GAME CHAT in this update?

WOAH WOAH WOAH that says playstation plus one year subscription free.

Thats advertised means its true i’ll take my free year now…. please (begging hat on)

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:14

haha, nice try, i’m afraid that’s just a slight error in the screen shot. Its pretty much free when you look at all the content you get though ;-)

Wow! I didn’t expect anything else than PlayStation Plus (which is awesome in it’s own right), but this just blows me away. Looking forward to see how the video editing works, and the improved Facebook integration. And, and that picture thing. Please, make more developers include screenshot features in games.

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:16

Hi, glad your looking forward to it, its all live now so if you haven’t got it already, get on it ;-)

More codec support please, xgame voice chat, expanded friend list,… Is the playstation blog share a total waste of our time?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:19

Hi, I will pass your comments on to the right people, thanks

forget facebook! what about twitter!

also thanks for the info

Lots of neat stuff. Shame the LBP Limited Time Offer is useless to a lot of people unlike the 3 extra months the US is offering.

It will be out at midday Japan time, like all the other updates. That’s about 6.5 hours from now.

What time in the UK? what time in the UK? What time in the UK? what time in the UK? What time in the UK? what time in the UK? What time in the UK? what time in the UK? What time in the UK? what time in the UK?
what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time? what time??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????-??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????-??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????-?

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:22

Thats a lot of question marks! midnight last night UK time, although I assume you already have it as you seem very keen ;-) Hope you enjoy it

HazEightNine 28 June, 2010 @ 22:33

yeah i agree twitter would be a very welcome edition to my PS3

Thank you Sony for finally putting in full facebook application. I absolutely love the idea with the photo and video integration to facebook, youtube, picasa with PSN. Also like PSN+ and will get it tomorrow! Here are some features I would like to see though next time to build on this great momentum:
Twitter Intergration, Youtube application, Cross Game Chat (must be!)and browser update with either Google Crome or Mozilla Firefox would be awesome!
Thanks again Sony!

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:29

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, i’ll pass those on for you.
The current video update in 3.4 allows you to upload direct to youtube, is this the sort of functionality you wanted? if not feel free to let me know exactly what youtube feature you would like to see, cheers

KillerBread 28 June, 2010 @ 22:36

cross game chat? you know the only feature we want

wow ! i thoght it’s just for the PSN pluse but the albums and videos …. just wow !!! thanks sony ,,, cross game chat and it’s gonna be PERFECT !

James Thorpe 29 June, 2010 @ 09:38

Hi, glad you like the update, we are still very commited to PSN as a free service but are pleased to be able to offer people a premium service above and beyond this.
