I’m afraid I don’t have any voucher codes to give away this week because I will be flying to Cologne on first thing Monday morning to cover gamescom and help set up the live stream of the SCEE press conference.
That being said, I wouldn’t want to rob you of our weekly discussion so the topic is this:
How do you feel about industry events such as E3 and gamescom and how do you think we should be covering them on PlayStation.Blog?
Speak your brains and I look forward to bringing the scent of Cologne to your browsers next week.
Tschüs!

I think E3 and Gamescom are vital to the gaming industry, not only to publicise games but to make the gaming developers more known in the gaming scene. It is a great way to unveil new products and to “give back” to the gamers, letting them try games still under development and whatnot
I really liked how E3 was covered on the Playstation blog, the live interviews were a really nice touch to the event for the guys and gals who can’t make it to the event (lucky sod James
). The live stream this year is amazing and I hope it all goes to plan (fingers crossed).
To top this off, have fun
Bring me back some swag and get some more Starhawk footage

Love em.
I’m now an avid follower, but I used to be on the other side (though not E3 or gamescom and in the ancient days of the Fuji symbol), and know how hard it is to keep a smile for 3-4 days in a row, and answer the same question a 1000 times, or tell them they know probably more then you do, but they’re a much needed focal point of information, something to look forward to.
With this 24 hour news society it is great to know that a few times a year, you’ll hear some major surprises and know what the general direction of the industry will be.
Thinking of the Blog, it is a great way to provide a focal point for the news conference (where before you had to try to find a working web stream), and (with enough preparation) can provide valuable answers and follow-up information to recently disclosed news.
And listen to the people that care about the games
(shame I won’t be at the Gamescom this year, but having at least the conference in Home or on the phone.. great.)

i really want to hear some very big news on big games on the blog and maybe live strems so we can watch stuff and i think the biggest stuff that should be on the blog during e3 or gamescom is if a game from an old series is made or u make a game that everyone is looking forward for. like at e3 i was shocked and surprised to find out about a new sly cooper game

I love big industry events like E3 and GamesCom
. I usually completely clean my schedule for the few days of E3 and GamesCom so i can sit and watch a live stream (been horrendous quality mobile phone ones in previous years for GamesCom, so glad to have a proper one this year) and discuss all the news. Following a press conference thread on NeoGAF is one of the funniest, most confusing things, you could ever imagine.
As for how you should be covering them, i think you do a good job of it already, with the live stream, blog posts during the conference, and interviews/gameplay afterwards. I particularly enjoyed the post-conference interviews streamed on the blogs with reader questions (at E3), will there be something like that for GamesCom?
Posted on 12 August, 2011 at 5:54 pm by James Gallagher
That’s not in the plan, sadly. It was, but then time got short and once we’d decided the conference was going to replay afterwards, we figured that might be more appealing to people that had missed the beginning. This is the first time I’m doing one of these live streams so the plan is keep it simple, do it well!

For many people the only way they can experience such events as E3 and Gamescom is via the interwebs, so it’s great that the PlayStation Blog covers them with Live Streaming. I especially liked how the US Blog covered E3 this year with the presenters, special guests and chats before and after the press conference, as well as the interviews and focus on games during the event itself. Maybe the EU Blog can team up the ex-FirstPlay team to provide this kind of content for Europe.

Events like E3, GamesCom are excellent as they unite the gaming community. It is always fun to play demos and hear news! Playstation Blog should make live stream of Sony’s on their blog. After it finishes, upload all the games trailers to the PS Store so people could download them and watch them.

Livestreaming and textblogs, background of event, behind the scenes etc.
Also, since I downloaded PS3 firmware 3.7, iPlayer, 4oD, itv player have vanished. Where have they gone? I’d like them back! I’ve tried all the usual fixes of turning it on and off, and logging into PSN etc.
Help?

Its great for users to get a glimpse of each new game coming their way before their release date. We all love to hear what everyone related in games wants to say. Thats why it’s needed to have a separate post for each topic (e.g. New game/console etc.) especially more popular games. (we want to hear all about Uncharted! And enough of COD, had enough of that overated modern warfare!)
So give us all the information and live stream, we cant hear too much about it!:)

I have the feeling there are going to be a lot less comments now that there is no price. But that aside, here’s my opinion:
“How do you feel about industry events such as E3 and gamescom and how do you think we should be covering them on PlayStation.Blog?”
I love these events! It’s a great way to show your game to a massive audience. Although it can be really difficult for small games/studios. With all the ‘violence’ of the big AAA games and studios they can easily be overshadowed. I always follow live stream on these events on foot. Sometimes even in the middle of the night, like the SONY E3 presser.
As for the Playstation.Blog coverage I like the ‘new’ live streams. The live blog thing the blog did before just wasn’t cutting it because I would watch livestream on some other website like IGN or gamespot or whatever. I also like the Live interviews from last E3. Hopefully you guys will be doing that at gamescom aswell.
So for me it’s developer interviews and so on. Maybe even doing interviews with the big bosses of major corporations.
Anyway, have fun James, I hope to hear from you soon!
Posted on 12 August, 2011 at 5:57 pm by James Gallagher
We’ll definitely do lots of dev interviews, although they won’t be live like at E3. I was in two minds but I decided to keep it fairly simple this year. Who knows in future.

I would love to hear more details about the social aspects of the Vita, as well as Near (gifts and leaderboards and such). I would also like to hear an exact EU/US release date for the Vita, but I don’t expect that for Gamescom considering it won’t be released until early next year.
I’m very happy you guys are doing a live video stream. That’s the most important thing, and then having interviews with developers afterwards is really good.
Also looking forward to visit Gamescom for the first time this year.

My thoughts on your question, James, is I think you should be very careful in not not blurring the line between editorial content and PR. Being who you are, you are obviously not a neutral source of information, and as long as you make it clear that the articles are PR pieces and not editorial content, I think you should be fine. Hard line to toe, though.
Posted on 12 August, 2011 at 6:41 pm by James Gallagher
This is a very interesting point and one that I think about a lot. It’s also the reason why, where possible, we invite the developers to talk about their games on our blog. The ideal situation is that this becomes a source of facts, straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. You guys want my information, not my opinions!

Part 1*
Events like E3 and gamescom are extremely important, they aren’t just events where you show off your game, it’s more of a sales pitch, they show us what we want and why we’d want it. I love how you’re basically spoilt with lots gameplay you’ve been hoping for months to see all in 1 day and announcing new hardware/firmware is something that is always welcome
.
The way interviews were done was great, bit of gameplay, plenty of talk and questions off twitter. It would be better if we basically got to see a lot of gameplay during the interview, seeing two people talk and ask questions is interesting but gameplay is something we need more of (I’m not saying we don’t get a shedload though).

i love these event’s and would be my dream covering them like you guys do on the blog. Listerning to all the fans reaction at annoucements, watching the pleasent reactions to surprise annoucements and getting a glimpse into the future first hand.
I know we all like the games press events etc but i do think the UK has a very non visible gaming scence though. It would be nice to see more things in the UK like the PAX events in America and having things like console based MLG tourny’s in and around the UK. I think things like Gamescom,E3 and TGS do a great job promoting the industry on a global scale but i’d love to see developers and publisher do more on a local level too. I know SOny do a great job with the access events but they are few and far between and we really need more simular and different types of these events.
I’d love to see a UK games show make the world game show calendar considering the amount of talent and great things the UK contributes to the industry. I know we have things like games fest and Eurogamer but there more about promoting retail outlets themselves than the industry as a whole.
Posted on 12 August, 2011 at 6:00 pm by James Gallagher
I know that Game is running a show later this year but I don’t know much about it. There would be demand for a UK show, but knowing how much work and money goes into E3 and gamescom, whether the game companies themselves would welcome another addition to the calendar, I don’t know.

Part 2*
I couldn’t find Sony’s gamescom 2011 line-up (yet to be announced?) and would like to request a few things and questions.
Plenty of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time gameplay + information and I have a few questions myself
Is the original voicing cast back for all the characters who are returning?
Is Carmelita Fox returning? If so will she have another new voice or one from the previous 3 games?
Will Bentley still be in a wheelchair or something similar to what we saw him in, in PlaySation Move Heroes?
How involved are Sucker Punch in Sly 4?
The environments got bigger in each game, will they be much bigger in Thieves in Time?
I think I should stop there, just incase it isn’t at gamescom and I’m sure you won’t be able to read out all of them if any at all. Final request, plenty of Vita info like official pricing, release date and new info on the top Vita games.

May fire up Home for it.I love/hate these things.I love announcements, proper game footage and stuff like that.
But I hate the people at these events
The blog stuff here is fine,a few other sites are ok,but it’s the big gaming sites that get on my nerves. They sit trying to be funny, ask really stupid questions and just come across as people who are scared of upsetting publishers. At times you can see devs sitting there thinking “WTH am I doing with these clowns” It’s because of this i’ve only checked out one review this gen,and that was when I imported the HK version of demons souls

Here is one thing I’m expecting, TO NOT SEE EVERYTHING REVEALED BEFORE THE SHOW!!!! lol!!! Leave everything for the show, even if a reveal only gets a couple of minutes, leave the content for the show!!
I hope to see Sony turn everything around after the PSN hack. I want to see them step up their game with cross game chat, lower PSN prices, more classic PSone content, more original games, and for First Party studios to realise this round of games has been a LITTLE underwhelming. The hype for Resistance 3, Uncharted 3 and other titles this year has been a bit dull. Time to step it up BIG TIME!! And stop using dubstep! lol!

1 – Stream press conference, then host the full conference once its over for download or to watch
2 – Have a “Like / Dislike” option present in the player whilst announcements are made to get fan reaction. (something similar to what they used in party elections and the Iraq trials)
3 – Short pre-show and interview with speaker afterwards
4 – Return of kevin Butler, or short skit video with him
39
Posted on 12 August, 2011 at 4:38 pm by zabbyh
5 – PSVita – does it support multiple accounts like PS3, or just 1 like PSP?
- New games announced, interviews with devs and gameplay vids
- Release date and price break downs for worldwide
- Import issues, will we be able to import a PSV from Japan and play online, cross regions, language support, etc.
- Also if we can import make sure we can switch the Circle and X buttons for “Accept” and “Back” as the Japanese ones are reveresed
- 3G and subscription fees breakdown for UK and other regions
- PSPlus, how will it work with PDV and will be getting more games/content for that aswell, or in place of PSP content which i presume willl begin to dry up.
6 – professional hardware quick looks, if new hardware is announced, and/or any revisions to old ones.
Thats all i can think of, hopefully it gives you ideas, and you ask some of those questions for me. Thanks.

E3 is like Christmas sometimes – you look forward to it all year and sometimes you get a nice surprise. Gamescom isn’t usually as exciting as E3 but Sony have been announcing some stuff at Gamescom (like the PS3 Slim reveal was cool). With so much news all at the one time it can be hard to keep up with it all if you don’t have good blogs to report and talk about it all, so good coverage is important.
So I like that the PSBlog usually does features on some of the smaller games, sometimes from Indie developers, to get them noticed a bit better. So more of that please!
When it comes to coverage of these events in general, I think choice is the key. I think it’s great that this year I can watch the Sony Gamescom conference in Home, or on my phone from the PS App, or streaming in Facebook etc. It’s also nice to be able to come on the blog and be able to read the live text coverage too, just in case the stream cuts out!
Posted on 12 August, 2011 at 5:58 pm by James Gallagher
I’m always on the lookout for the next indie hit – like when I found out about Beat Hazard Ultra, and that it was made by just one guy. They get the extra exposure for their game without needed to pay for a PR campaign and I get a story for the blog that the independent gaming sites might have skipped over, so everyone wins!
