PlayStation at gamescom 2013: The best place to play

Final date

Following another successful gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, we’re really thrilled to have been able to announce lots of big news to the PlayStation community and share with our fans what’s next for PlayStation across all our platforms.

At the top of the list, and I’ve no doubt the most highly anticipated of the day, comes the reveal that PlayStation 4 will be arriving in Europe on 29th November.

Having opened the show with the first ever look at the user experience, we also announced five all-new PS4 titles from SCE World Wide Studios – Rime, Hell Divers, Shadow of the Beast, Resogun and Everybody’s Gone to The Rapture. All fantastic titles from some of the most creative and inspiring independent development studios, it’s a real buzz that teams such as The Chinese Room, Tequilla Works and Arrowhead choose to work with us.

We are of course completely focused on making next generation products for next generation gamers and we were able to showcase our commitment to this promise through updates on some of the PS4 launch titles, from the impressive first ever reveal of Killzone Shadow Fall’s spectacular MP, to the new Infamous Second Son trailer.

As the teams working on all our World Wide Studios AAA launch titles continue to push the gameplay and visual boundaries there is huge satisfaction for us being able to share their development with our fans. Having the developer community on board has meant that every feature of PS4 has been carefully crafted to enhance the user experience. The gamer is at the heart of PlayStation’s DNA.

Gamescom this year has also been an opportunity for us to share news on all our platforms and it gave us great pleasure to announce a host of new PS Vita titles. With an existing library of over 125 dedicated PS Vita games available already, we are now more committed than ever to delivering the content our fans are looking for.

From Borderlands and Football Manager being made available for the first time on PS Vita, to all new titles such as Murasaki Baby and BigFest, there is a wonderfully diverse range of titles that our fans can look forward to playing on the go.

It’s also exciting to see how strong the relationship between PS Vita and PS4 is, particularly through Remote Play. When you combine the strength of PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4, alongside the more accessible price point, you can start to see the true value of the platform.

There was also good news for PS3. Kicking off with a brand new Gran Turismo 6 video was a great opener – Polyphony Digital has always been on the cutting edge of creating awe-inspiring driving simulators and being able to show-off their capabilities is always thrilling. GT6 is a great example of how PS3, now in its seventh year, is still delivering innovative games and we have more to come this year with the imminent release of both Beyond: Two Souls and GTA5.

From today our recommended maximum retail price of PS Vita and PS Vita Memory Card will be reduced to €199.99 and we will be reducing the recommended maximum retail price of PS3 to €199.99.

From a notable drive behind PlayStation Plus, for just over €4 a month, Plus will give gamers access to features including cloud storage, online multiplayer and fantastic games including #DRIVECLUB PS Plus Edition and newly announced Resogun at launch, to various other services available on PS4. We are also introducing VIP broadband with a selection of European partners including the likes of Deutche Telekom (Germany), Orange (France), Virgin Media (UK), and ONO (Spain).

Alongside this you’ll also have noticed that we recognised the expectation that consumers will want to use their consoles to watch movies, catch up on TV and listen to music. With that in mind, we announced through the PlayStation Network that over 15 video services and applications are coming to PS4 including Watchever, Maxdome, Wuaki, TotalChannel, RTBF, Ximon, Pather, Tvigle, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, BBC News, NowTV, Five, FilmoTV, Jook, GameOne, Vidzone and IGN.

As we approach the PS4 launch date on 29th November we’ll be keeping you updated on all the amazing things that you, the gamers, can expect.

This really is going to be the biggest entertainment launch of the year.

Did you enjoy this?

It was mentioned that there would be a ‘significant price reduction’ for Vita memory cards, and the new prices have already been announced in the US. Any word for UK/EU?

Jestersoil 21 August, 2013 @ 9:42 am   3

all great news :D REALLY :D

but where is Greece regarding the release date???? :(

Nice job on the video shame I can’t watch it

Shifty_Geezer 21 August, 2013 @ 9:47 am   5

Why did Sony bother creating the 3D camera? What’s it used for? Why would anyone want to buy it when it has zero games and, going by PS3′s history, will likely get next to zero support?

Video services? Lies, lies and lies, PR bull…t and another lies. History repeats itself – it will be the same as with PS3. Those services will be for 2-3 chosen countries, others will get nothing!!!

What does VIP broadband mean? I already have Virgin Media and have pre-ordered a PS4 so what will this partnership mean for me?

That was boring. I was waiting for announcements of new AAA games for the PS4 and the PS Vita

AngryGamer94 21 August, 2013 @ 10:06 am   9

So much for “a worldwide launch”.
I’ll make sure to cancer my pre order and get an xone instead.

SuperJay182 21 August, 2013 @ 10:39 am   10

When are the new vita packs released? And what is in each of them?

When did they say worldwide launch? MS is the one cutting back on countries in EU till next year. EU is a lot of different places & Sony manages it all this year. But guess your just an angry gzmer & just wanted to be angry :)

evilwitch83 21 August, 2013 @ 10:43 am   12

Is it possible to turn off the feature of the ps4 which downloads games it thinks that you want before purchasing them? If you can’t turn this off, then I will not be buying a ps4.

Robinworldwide 21 August, 2013 @ 10:47 am   13

Although i’m a big PS fan and i pre-ordered my PS4 long time ago already, i’m gonna have to side with #6. Sony’s acting as if all their services are globally available, but i’m sceptical and think that a lot of the mentioned services will be USA/UK only again, or maybe some other big countries get them as well. Us in the smaller countries should probably feel lucky if maybe we get a few of those services (a few years after), but probably most of them never will come over. You can say about the big competitor what you want, but at least they are honest about that part. Sony just doesn’t mention anything about the (global) availablity at all.

Will this mean Ireland will get the video store and other Apps? The media aspect in Ireland has had a poor showing with like less than 10 apps.

Gotta agree with some points in the comments, what about small countries? Will we get music unlimited and video service? I understand there are different copyrights with all the countries but these services have been launched a while ago and i think that is was possible to do something… Any news for this? :(

Bahamut_MW 21 August, 2013 @ 10:59 am   16

Was really expecting some first party games for Vita, but i guess i couldn’t expect much more than some indies and cross play for ps4.
I didn’t really bought Vita to be an expensive ps4 controller…

randellaUK 21 August, 2013 @ 11:03 am   17

Are we going to get a proper walk through of the UI and know when the limits will be lifted for friends does this reflect just PS4 or does it go backwards with PS3/PSVITA to show 2000 friends and show are proper names.What perks are there for having the PS camera does it have voice control for log in ect.?????

WOW!!! That PS4 Video is LOVELY :P :P :P
+ To all the people who are moaning about the PS4 not coming out to their countries yet is there is NO way SONY could release the PS4 everywhere?! I feel for you guys tho & hope you get it very soon;) Maybe import it? Easy these days with the internet + the Xbox ONE is being released in LESS countries to.

i had to laugh so much when i saw him sitting there like a boss.

Eisdealer- 21 August, 2013 @ 11:28 am   20

The best place to play… but only if you are not a COD, Battlefield or Fifa player. Why cant Sony make deals with Activision and EA to get dlc etc early??? Ghosts on XBox will have dedicated servers and exclusive gamemodes, Fifa Ultimate Team is XBox exclusive… I’m switching my ps4 pre-order to an XBox One pre-order now. Sorry sony but you failed again.

undergroundgr 21 August, 2013 @ 11:31 am   21

there is a huge fanbase here in greece waiting for a release date.please update us.

@ Eisdealer-

there timed exclusives.

they have not said ultimate team is a timed exclusive yet but you can bet it will be, EA make a fortune out of ultimate team and there not gonna just kill that revenue stream for an exclusive deal with 1 console, particularly if that console sells the way pre-order numbers suggest and ps4 becomes the no 1 console in the first year.

Now we’ve seen enough indie support I’d say, it is cool and all, but just a big AAA like Borderlands 2 (what is not my kind of game even) announced for PSVita isn’t going to cut it for the future.

PSVita needs at least around 5 to 6 big AAA games a year. And with that I mean 1st party Playstation ones. Like Killzone and Tearaway.

Ones that drive hardware sales too, like Gran Turismo, God of War etc etc. New fresh IP’s like Tearaway. I hope Sony addresses those at TGS and PAX in 2013, to plan out for us what to expect in 2014 for the handheld I love. This really, really needs to be done.

Gamescom overall was good. And I like the november release date for The Netherlands for the PS4, gonna enjoy DriveClub and most likely Killzone Shadowfall! First up: Killzone Mercenary Beta this afternoon on my PSVita

undergroundgr 21 August, 2013 @ 11:59 am   24

the only exclusive about fifa for x1 is the legends mode.ut will be on ps4 since day one.

Excellent press conference!

But you really should hire a director who makes less camera cuts when games are being shown.

Voodoo341 21 August, 2013 @ 12:29 pm   26

All well and good and Sony are certainly ticking the right boxes but are Sony as fair as they claim? Will Sony commit to releasing content in Europe at the same time as everywhere else? Will games like CSGO disappear from Europe again for no good reason? After all this is the same company that decided to dump Singstar on it’s customers and completely ignored the thousands of customers who didn’t want it.Say what ever you want about Microsoft but at least they listen to their customers. Would Sony and specifically SCEE do the same?

So we getting any video services on the PS3 as promised? Or is it safe to assume those video services will never reach us, not on PS3 nor on PS4. I can already predict in the Netherlands there will be no BBC iPlayer, BBC Sports or BBC news, what other services can i remove off that list?

No Greece love?

Oh Man!

We are practically a playstation nation over here…

#23: TheMART:

I agree, but VITA don’t need “God of War” and other spin-offs.
All the PS3 spin-offs is one of the things that scares people off to get VITA. VITA is known as the “spin-off and Indie” handheld, and Sony seem to refuse make VITA an attractive handheld.

VITA needs several exclusive AAA games on near Uncharted GA quality to sell handhelds.
The problem is that the market is too little for any 3rd party to use so much money to make a VITA games.

At Gamesconn, Sony basically let Nintendo keep the handheld dominance for a long time. If Sony did what they promised at Gamesconn, it would have increased VITA sales to some degree. 1 year old port like Borderlands 2 is not gonna change that.

@29

Disagreed. PSVita does need GOW, GT and other of those big names. Why? They were successful on PSP, sold millions. It shifts hardware units. More PSVItas sold means more 3rd party support.

Therefor, it needs those big IP names, aside of the refreshing titles/new IP’s like Tearaway.

@TheMART

he does have a bit of a point(post 29).

i personally don’t need games on my vita that i can happily sit and play on my ps3.

games like escape plan,tearaway and gravity rush that only on vita is the type of thing we need.
ports of ps2 hd collections that are already on ps3 wont shift units, NEW games in these franchises are welcome like killzone thats on the way or the gta stories games.

sometimes i think making the same game for ps3,ps4 and vita is overkill.
the vita has to stand on its own 2 feet and should not have to rely on remote play,cross buy(some people only play vita at home and why would we need cross buy on a ps4 title if its able to be remote played) ect to succeed.
we need games that are ONLY ON VITA.

uncharted golden abyss
gravity rush
dokuro
escape plan

not ports :- jak and daxter collection, god of war collection
mobile games :- fruit ninja
shovelware :- this is subjective so i wont post examples of what i consider shovelware.

Europe = bigest market
so why later then usa ?????? ( not amused )

video services = i do not need of sony them promise on ps3 nowh io have other service.

singstar dump = very simpel , do not buy singstar + dance games from sony + if u want game from sony u wait untile price drop …. i to can play hard game if them not lissen to al peopel complaining !

only + points to me are
ps4 price
minecraft
starbound
infamous ( when price 25€= i not forget singstar )

vita remote play

bad tings =
vita stil overpriced : need to be 150 € ( i have one )
mem cards = al price 50% of
indie games can be fun but to many = to many where are other games to vita /ps4?
puting mony on psn tru sms ????
map folders download list !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@hayzink

Oh personally, for myself, I would like all new fresh stuff like Tearaway, Gravity Rush and some. Sure.

Problem is: we’ve seen that Gravity Rush isn’t selling mad units. So I wasn’t even talking for myself, I was talking about what has shown in the past being successful on PSP, which is stuff like the GOW’s that sold millions of copies, Gran Turismo etc. The PSVita needs to shift hardware units at this point in time.

Thus: especially to people that don’t own a PS3 or PS4 around coming November yet. Those actually will buy a PSVita just because they need to have PS+ membership with the PS4 for online and many of them don’t want to miss out on the free content.

So I wasn’t saying that specifically with my preference, more about the market, what shifts PSVitas. It needs both at the same time actually, the GOW’s, GT’s and on top of that the exclusive stuff both indie and AAA like Tearaway.

Then again, looking forward to Killzone Mercenary, although spinoff, it almost seems more interesting than KZ SF on PS4…

@TheMART

im fine with spinoffs, in fact id be over the moon if a infamous spin off was coming to vita and i do agree stuff like this will shift units.

i do however think sony need to put out content that will make people buy a vita over a ps3.
right now as a buyer who has nothing if you walk into a shop and buy a vita over a ps3 you would be off your head and that’s what needs to change, the vita should not be marketed as a companion console it should have system selling software.

there’s enough content from nintendo for people to decide if a 3ds or a wii is the better choice for them, but with vita and ps3 the content is firmly stacked in the ps3′s favour

its like if you were to tell someone about a great game you played on vita say guacamole and they think great id love to play that ill get it for my ps3.(not the most stunning example i have ever came up with i admit)
where as in the past if i gave my friend a shot of patapon or chains of olympus(before the port) on my psp if they liked it and wanted to play it they had no choice but to buy a psp.

i think indy titles are great and could help shift units if the vita was the only place to play them(outside of pc)

DnB-Soldier1988 21 August, 2013 @ 2:22 pm   35

Nice, two weeks after the US gets it… and that’s a great indication that once again, the EU PSN userbase will be handled the worst of the three regions, treated like a third-rate customer because we are of little importance to Sony and thus deserve having the worst of the three services, no equality here.

If there was a way to change PSN region, I wouldn’t even hesitate.

Yeah hayzink, that is why they need to do both.

And actually aside of Killzone and Tearaway there ARE other interesting games out this year, too bad for the moment Japan only and it needs regional coding/languages.

Like God Eater 2, Phantasy Star Online 2 and more. I think overall PSVita could set itself apart for this year, if Sony put effort in that regional stuff.

For 2014 though, it needs more announcements. Then again, I’ve seen Sony giving more info about the next year on TGS (this year september) and PAX at the end of the year. So who knows…

monoliet 21 August, 2013 @ 2:29 pm   37

1 -new great ting = kilzone ( al dlc free ) can be confirmd by sony ?

2 -bad ting rtbf???? u have in belgium 2 major language !!!!
rtbf = not mi language ( lots of dutch belgium peopel hate french language , me included to tv / films)

Over 20 video services and applications coming to PS4 across Europe: Watchever, Maxdome and LoveFilm (Germany), Wuaki and TotalChannel (Spain), BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, BBC News, Demand5 and LoveFilm (UK), Tvigle (Russia), RTBF and DVDPost (Belgium), Ximon (Netherlands / Belgium), Pathe (Netherlands), Viaplay (Nordics), and FilmoTV, Jook and GameOne (France)

Hi Playstation people!

Are there any upcoming apps for the Vita, I have sent mais to the developers for Taptu(RSS reader) and Doggcatcher (podcast app) and asked them if they have ever considered to release their apps on the Playstation Vita.

I would love to be able to listening to some of my favorite podcasts in the backgroud of the game I´m playing or to suspend my game to find out what the biggest playstation news are(ie this blog, but also other blogs that I´m intrested in).

At the moment I have to use my phone for this and it feels like a bad solution.

ps. Thank you for a great show last night! =)

@TheMART

tgs is usually a big deal for sony as its there home show but ps4 is still going to take center stage.

there has just been some strange moves with regards to vita which makes me think that 3rd partys see it as dead.

2 glaring examples.

resident evil revelations
and the upcoming Castlevania: Lords of Shadow — Mirror of Fate

both 3ds games made for handhelds getting ports to home consoles but not the vita.

sonys first party studios need to champion the vita, get 4 to 6 aaa titles into development(hopefully they already are) couple this with the price drop and they will shift units and then 3rd party stuff will start to come.

the wiiu is having issues like the vita and nintendo are taking the bull by the horns and getting there big franchises out there to shift units so that 3rd party studios actually start to give a “bleep” about the console.

3rd party for the moment may be on pause hayzink, but…

If with the new indie stuff and PS4, maybe in combo deals PSVita is going to shift units again, 3rd party will start to invest again. As long as the current 5.5 mln users will be 10 mln and climbing to be a healthy base.

Remember: PSVita users have the highest attach rate in games like in ever, compared to any console. Looking at myself, it is true, I’ve been buying mad games for PSVita even with the free PS+ games out there.

Sony has the advantage of the ecosystem for the Playstation family with PS+, Nintendo got virtually nothing to push and shift the WiiU with (no combo to be made) aside of the games they gotta release.

I think PSVita in the end will do just fine, it had a slow start, but lets be fair: PS3 had a slow start too and it is beating 360 now in lifetime sales

@TheMART

i have a massive amount of vita games i have bought digitally also so i know vita owners do buy games and its a good attach rate (assassins creed sold around 750k and if you compare that to say dmc which has sold less than that across all platforms combined you can see its a good attach rate)

btw the ps3 is leading in lifetime sales right enough but it has a much lower attach rate than the 360 which is why i think lots of developers would tell you the 360 won last gen (ps3 is my weapon of choice i thought the 360 became a mess over the last few years and i sold mine a while back and up to that point i had both from launch)

Hi Jim,

You forgot to mention DVDPost as streaming service coming to playstation :)

Kind regards

@hayzink

yeah, PS3 on games took off really slow, maybe customers listened to Sony saying back then: ‘people will buy a PS3 even if there are no games’ and stuff like that lol.

The 360 users were eating up games as if it were cookies especially first couple of years, myself included. The attach rates of games got pretty good on PS3 too though, some franchises are even more popular on PS3 and outsell their 360 counterpart.

Just wanted to say: PS3 was a slow moving unit too, with fewer 3rd party support. But Sony always has a long breath and keeps pushing. MS just seems to give up over time (Xbox was left to die after just FOUR years in the market, when 360 appeared, 360 was basically left to 3rd party and Kinect 1st party after just being 4 years on the market). So I am pretty sure that PSVita will be alright too.

BTW Killzone Mercenary Beta is insane, go play it mate!

@TheMART

i actually hate fps games and have never liked killzone lol but i totally see why games like that are cool for vita so that beta is not for me ;)

I hear ya hayzink

I ain’t loving the FPS genre really, hell too many COD style shooters these days. I mostly enjoy platformers. Probably has to do with my youth, the systems and games we had then… Aging I guess

BUT, I had my fair share of fun with Gears 1 MP at this gens start, some fun with COD4 MP (after that, COD’s became yearly boring updates) and after that the KZ2 MP. KZ3 I didn’t enjoy so dropped it again. Aside of those, I hardly played or enjoyed any other shooter. Certainly not for its ‘story’ as FPS have none.

Pew pew pew, clear room/area, onto the next, pew pew pew

Killzone Mercenary MP gives me the fun of the games mentioned above though, from the little bit I’ve played now that is! Looking forward to Tearaway more, but this I’ll get too, certainly with the reasonable new prices: Killzone Merc for 38 Euro, Tearaway 29 Euro. For just 67 Euro in total 2 AAA games? I’m in!

TriTonNoX 21 August, 2013 @ 6:34 pm   46

Vtf pay for online multiplayer are you kidding me pleas make it free as it was and still is on the ps3 more people will buy it if you do trust me all of my friends sead they would buy it if online was free or a bit lower price pleas make this true a lot of people wil be happier.
thank you.

@46

This gen 80 mln PS3′s sold with free online. This gen, about the same amount of 360′s sold and a lot of them paid 50 a year for just online not even free games.

That.

declan__watson 21 August, 2013 @ 7:14 pm   48

Hey everyone
Hey Mr Ryan, an amazing show you guys put on last night and its so glad to see a post by you and your doing an Amazing job :)
I enjoyed everything about last nights show, from all the great amazing games to the end and Sony and Ubisoft extending there ‘forever lasting relationship’ ;)
Looking forward to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Watch_Dogs is an amazing masterpiece and the watch_Dogs Film which is going to be an exceptional masterpiece just like the game. I will be asking for this game alongst my PlayStation 4 ;)
I was also thinking about something else too, its no secret that Sony and Ubisoft are more than ‘very close friends’ ;) they were made to be with each other, thats why I thought of like a investment in Ubisoft or a stake in the company, make them ethier 1st or 2nd party and then make them apart of Sony so that they can make games for Multiplatforms so be like owned by Sony but privately held and then they can operate with Sony and make exclusive games/Downloadable Content and Multiplatform games too and bring the whole experiance together because you guys are made to be ‘together’ ;) :)

European_Gamer 21 August, 2013 @ 7:59 pm   49

Haven’t you made any deals with Danish TV broadcasters like DR, TV2, Viasat, and SBS?
